Michael Conlan Links Up With Veteran Trainer Pedro Diaz

Featherweight contender Michael Conlan has decided to train under veteran Cuban coach Pedro Diaz, who works out of Florida.

Diaz is known for his work with Guillermo Rigondeaux, Filip Hrgovic, Miguel Cotto, Alexis Angulo and others.

Conlan recently parted way with trainer Adam Booth.

Back in May, Conlan was knocked out in five rounds by IBF world champion Luis Alberto Lopez. It was Conlan's second crack at a world title. He suffered a dramatic twelfth round knockout loss to WBA champion Leigh Wood in March of 2022.

The Irish Olympian tested out several trainers, but it was Diaz who was viewed as the best option.

“We went to a few gyms and met a few coaches but Pedro stood out – he ticked all the boxes. He is very technical and he impressed us at different levels: His knowledge, his experience… They gelled well, they worked really well so it’s a very, very exciting collaboration," brother and manager, Jamie Conlan, told Irish News.

“Pedro has rebuilt fighters – he did it with Cotto to beat (Antonio) Margarito in the rematch and to fight Mayweather but we went with him because him and Michael are on the same wavelength, they think the same about how to approach a fight.

“He was very impressive and I think it’s a breath of fresh air. I think he can help Michael improve and learn and hopefully get over that last hurdle. He identified strengths and weaknesses in Michael – he saw things in Michael that he thinks will be able to make him a world champion.”

Yeah, they need to be very careful now - it is concerning.

no Cuban going to fix his flaws. I can never support IRA supporting Conlan, watching him sparked by Wood made me a lifelong Wood fan.

I understand, I do worry that the super long am career he had may have taken his best years though.

I'm not a man for politics but I have to intervene in this respect. With respect, there was a time in history when the Irish country was summarily taken over and subjected to a plantation. It was either you're with the IRA or you're with the UK at that point. That's in the past but that's how it is. Action was taken by people who were far outnumbered by the United Kingdom in response to being invaded. If I come into your house and walk out with the television I can expect you to have a problem with that. I'm not condoning any crimes because lord knows there are too many back and forth to mention and as much of a tragedy as it was, once again I have to say, if I invade your space and more or less enslave you, I can expect resistance. Ultimately it was my fault. I just wouldn't be too harsh on Conlan for that.

I can't respond rashly to a post as considered and polite as that. You might see from my surname that I was raised by an Irish Catholic, I got so bored of the ersatz Fenianism and cliches about Bobby Sands (my brother got those two names as middle names, thankfully I did not). I have no idealism that the occupation of Ireland was anything other than unjust, I just got mad at hearing an alcoholic moron family singing Provo songs when they were as committed to Irish republicanism as they were to sobriety. It is definitely a subject matter I am biased upon due to my own personal circumstances, I'll own that.
