Haney To Pursue 140 Title Versus Prograis, Petitions WBC To Retain 135 Belt In Lieu Of Stevenson Mandatory

Devin Haney has made his decision.

The WBC, however, has not.

BS.com has learned that Haney will move forward with tentative plans to next challenge WBC junior welterweight titlist Regis Prograis (29-1, 24KOs). Their respective teams remain in talks for potential showdown later this fall.

The decision was made right at the eleventh hour of the extended deadline provided to Haney whether to next fight at 140 or remain at lightweight, where 2016 Olympic Silver medalist and former two-division titlist Shakur Stevenson is the mandatory challenger.

However, Boxing Scene has learned that Haney’s team has petitioned the WBC to instead retain his lightweight title through his potential fight versus Prograis. Stevenson’s side, in turn, has petitioned the WBC to honor its previous ruling and declare the title vacant based on Haney’s decision to not honor his mandatory title defense.

Boxing Scene has additionally learned that the matter will now appear before the WBC Board of Governors, who will vote on whether to grant Haney’s request or declare its lightweight title vacant.

Efforts to contact the WBC, and representatives for Haney and Stevenson were not immediately returned as this goes to publication.

The current steps in place provide, in effect, a second extension to original July 21 deadline imposed to resolve this dilemma. It’s also a violation of its own rules which disallow for modifications under such circumstances.

However, it remains unclear what action—if any—will be taken should the WBC approve Haney’s request to retain his title through his next fight. It would directly impact the status of Stevenson’s next contest since he is entitled to next challenge for the title.

It was confirmed earlier in the month that Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) is due to next challenge for the lightweight title in a bid to become a three-division champion. The former WBO featherweight titlist and unified WBC/WBO junior lightweight champ earned the position in a sixth-round knockout of unbeaten Shuichiro Yoshino in their April 8 WBC lightweight title eliminator in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

Haney was officially placed on the clock in mid-July, roughly two months after a May 20 unanimous decision win over former three-division titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko to successfully defend his undisputed crown.

The 24-year-old from Las Vegas by way of California’s Bay Area has held the full WBC title since October 2019 and has made seven overall title defenses. Haney fully unified the division with a wide decision win over unbeaten lineal WBA/IBF/WBO champ George Kambosos last June 5 in Melbourne, Australia. He repeated the feat last October before his win over Lomachenko earlier this spring.

Little was made of next steps for the unbeaten champ until the WBO called for clarification on his next move. The Puerto Rico-headquartered organization was more interested in whether Haney planned to challenge newly crowned lineal/WBO champ Teofimo Lopez, though their deadline came and went without an official response from Haney, which was treated as a decision to remain put at lightweight.

Stevenson is the number-one ranked WBO lightweight contender and has petitioned to be named mandatory.

Haney also has a confirmed mandatory with the IBF, where Argentina’s Gustavo Lemos is the challenger in waiting. It has been theorized that Lemos would ultimately fight for the vacant title, potentially versus Mexico City’s Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz if he beats Giovani Cabrera on the Errol Spence-Terence Crawford undercard this Saturday in Las Vegas.

Cruz is the next highest ranked contender in line and has already twice rejected paths that would allow him to move up in the WBC rankings and challenge for its title.

The WBA situation is the least problematic. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) holds the ‘Regular’ lightweight title and would be upgraded to ‘Full’ champ under a scenario where Haney abandoned—or is ordered to act on—his WBA ‘Super’ title status.

For now, the focus is on whether Haney-Prograis will get made and whether he will enter the ring as undisputed champion. Stevenson and his team will undoubtedly want confirmation on the latter before either he or Haney enter the ring, as it is abundantly clear it will no longer come versus each other.

Heard rumors swirling around that this was going to go down and now he's done it.
Can't see Haney having too many problems with Prograis.

Haney is never going back to 135, time to get those belts all vacant, because it’s criminal to have one of the best divs in boxing waiting.

Imagine…

Loma vs Shakur for the Wbo

Tank vs frank for the wba.

Cruz vs zepeda for the WBC

Lemos vs KAmbo for the IBF

Then all the juicey unifications possible.

It'll be nice to see Prograis knocking Haney out after the Lomachenko robbery, but the reason tells Haney by wie dec.

Haney - Shakur would've been a pretty significant fight. Haney - Prograis is just killing time. If it paves the way for Haney - Teofimo at 140, then that would be fine. Otherwise, I think Haney leaving the lightweight division (presumably to avoid Shakur?) is just... disappointing. He was technically the undisputed champ, and every fight he participates in, there would be the potential to crown a new undisputed champ. There were plenty of interesting challengers at 135, especially Shakur and Gervonta.

Regis Prograis Angry, Says Devin Haney Trying To Change Fight Date

Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) says he’s already signed the contract for the fight, and he’s not going to agree to a new date. Regis feels Haney wants an advantage over him by not giving him enough time to train, and he’s not going to agree to it.

He states that if Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is trying to use this to get out of the fight, he can face someone else and go back down to 135.

Prograis isn’t saying when Haney is trying to reschedule the contest, but it appears he wants it to occur sooner than October. Regis thinks Haney is doing that, so he has less time to train for the fight.

“Man, they got some p***y in the right game right now. You know me and Haney are supposed to fight,” said Regis Prograis to Fight Hub TV, talking about Devin Haney trying to change the data for their fight in October.

“We agreed on a date, we agreed on everything, and now they’re trying to move the date. The Haney’s, I know you’re smart, but you’re some smart bi***hes at the same time.”

“Y’all trying to pull some slick s**t, but we ain’t going for that,” said Prograis. “We already agreed to the date. That’s what it is. We agreed to the date. Why can’t y’all go on the same date we agreed on?

“I signed the contract. What else do you want? What more do you want? Y’all some bi**ches. The Haney’s some b***ches. Y’all scared. Y’all don’t want me to get ready. That’s what you want me to do, but I’m already getting ready.

“So, I signed the contract for the date already. The date is already in the contract. Y’all can’t move it. You ain’t no big draw. I don’t need you. So if you don’t want to fight, go fight somebody else. Go do what you want. Go stay at 135, and do whatever you got to do.

“The date is the date, and that’s what I’m standing on that,” said Prograis.

Regis Prograis-Devin Haney Now Reportedly Targeted For Nov 11

Prograis’ trainer, Bobby Benson, told K.O. Artists Sports in an interview released today that the new date for the fight looks to be Saturday, November 11.

“Nov 11…we signed the contract for Nov 11.”

The clash between the WBC Super Lightweight champion and the Undisputed 135-pound king was originally targeted for October 28 in Las Vegas.

However, contracts were not finalized in time and Matchroom Boxing lost the planned site for the bout affecting the economics of the deal – that is according to Dan Rafael.

Prograis just isn't talented enough to hang with Haney. It's a good fight on paper, but Haney should beat Prograis to a comfortable UD.

Prograis Promises To Beat Haney: ‘I Don't Get Recognition I Deserve, I’m On Verge Of Superstardom’

“I'm training for Dec. 9. I've been training for this. First, the date was supposed to be Oct. 28, then I signed for Nov. 11, and now they say Dec. 9 is the date. I've been locked in ever since. I'm just ready,” Prograis told Boxing Scene in an interview.

“I'm a two-time world champion and I don't get the recognition I deserve. But this fight is going to put me on the map where I belong,” said Prograis. “My road has never been easy. It's always been kind of bumpy.”

“I feel like I am on the verge of superstardom,” said Prograis. “I am going to show up and show out on December 9.”

DAZN PPV Main Event 12/9 In San Francisco

Devin Haney’s ambitious move up in weight to challenge hard-hitting 140-pound champion Regis Prograis was finally officially announced Tuesday morning.

Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, which will promote their fight, revealed what has long been public knowledge, that Prograis-Haney is set for December 9 in San Francisco. Their 12-round fight for Prograis’ WBC super lightweight title will be the main event of a card held at Chase Center, the home arena of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

Haney, a resident of Henderson, Nevada, was born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland before his father, Bill Haney, moved him to the Las Vegas area when he was a teenager.

The price point for a fight that will headline a DAZN Pay-Per-View show in the United States was not revealed in the release sent out Tuesday morning.

Presale availability for tickets to the Prograis-Haney card will begin October 5 at noon PDT (see Matchroom’s X account for more information). Tickets will go on sale to the general public October 6, also at noon PDT, and can be purchased at www.chasecenter.com.

Haney, 24, will make his debut at the junior welterweight limit of 140 pounds when the undefeated, undisputed lightweight champion opposes Prograis, a New Orleans native. Prograis, 34, has fought at or near 140 pounds for all but three fights since the strong southpaw made his pro debut in April 2012.

“Finally, we’re ready to go on Saturday, December 9, and I can’t wait to put on a show,” Prograis said. “I’ve already started training camp and I’ll be more than ready to do what I do best. Devin has done well at 135 pounds, but I’m the best in the world at 140 pounds and I will prove that once again!”

The younger Haney edged three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko on the scorecards in his last fight, a closely contested 12-round bout he won by unanimous decision May 20 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) retained the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO lightweight titles that night, but he indicated during his post-fight press conference that his well-documented difficulties squeezing down to that division’s 135-pound limit might’ve made his victory over Ukraine’s Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) his last fight at that weight.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Haney said. “It’s been a dream of mine to fight in my hometown. I’m excited for the opportunity to become a two-division world champion in the city where it all started. The energy in the building is going to be electric. I haven’t fought at home since I was an amateur, so I’m looking for my city to show up and show out. As a kid, I always envisioned fighting at The Oracle in Oakland. Now with Chase Center, I have two dream locations with a bridge between them.

“So, my first order of business is to blow the roof off Chase Center on December 9 with an amazing event. I picked a focused and hungry champion to invite to my hometown. Regis is going to try to knock me out and that’s exactly what I need him to be trying to do. This is what you do when you are the youngest promoter in boxing. I’m the real face of boxing. December 9. Legacy and money.”

The WBC made Haney its lightweight champion in recess, which affords him at least the option of returning to lightweight as the division’s fully unified champion for his following fight. Haney still holds the IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight titles as well.

Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs), of Katy, Texas, will make the second defense of the then-vacant WBC super lightweight crown he won when he knocked out Jose Zepeda (37-4, 28 KOs, 2 NC) in the 11th round last November 26 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Prograis signed a three-fight deal with Matchroom four months ago in part because he wanted this type of high-profile fight.

Prograis’ performance in his first fight of that contract drew some criticism, but he dropped Puerto Rico’s Danielito Zorrilla (17-2, 13 KOs) in the third round and beat his cautious challenger by large margins on two scorecards June 17 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Judges Josef Mason (117-110) and Robert Tapper (118-109) respectively scored nine and 10 rounds for Prograis, whose aforementioned knockdown was the difference on the card of judge Craig Metcalfe (114-113).

Haney: “I gotta step on you. I gotta crush you. You’re in my way. It’s levels, and I’m at the highest. I’m at the peak. Just another night for me. Another victim. Another body. I’m gonna fornicate you up. Regis, I’m coming for you.”

Prograis: “I’m breaking you down, bro. I’m gonna break you down, break your heart and break your will. I’m gonna take everything from you. You’re manufactured. You’re not real. You’re fake. I keep stressing this over and over, I’m going to hurt you. You’re a little boy to me. Everybody that’s there, all your people, they’re gonna see you get knocked out, and I’m gonna knock you out cold. fornicate boxing, this is gonna be a massacre.”

Taking into account all of the top bouts of the last year or so, Haney impressed me more than most others when it came to body work.
His body attack against Lomachenko was absolutely world class, I didn't think he was capable of such high standards in that field, he really won me over with how well placed and powerful those punches were.
I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

Should be a good fight this. :box:
I'm hoping Reggie just had an off night last time out against Zorrilla because I sorta thought he lost that one. I also hope he hasn't got old overnight because he is 34 and a SLW so that's the upper limit for those guys before they drop iff a cliff if they haven't already.
Realistically I see a 12 round beat down for Prograis. He is probably tough enough to hang with Haney, but not sharp enough to really put it on him.

Miyo Yoshida To Challenge IBF Titlist Ebanie Bridges On Prograis-Haney DAZN PPV Bill

Another challenger coming off a loss has been lined up to face Ebanie Bridges.

BS.com has learned that former two-time junior bantamweight titlist Miyo Yoshida has been secured to challenge Australia’s Bridges for her IBF bantamweight belt. The fight was made one day after it was confirmed that Sydney’s Avril Mathie was forced to withdraw from the December 9 clash due to an undisclosed injury.

Bridges-Yoshida will serve as one of two title fights on a DAZN Pay-Per-View. The event is topped by the Regis Prograis-Devin Haney grudge match for Prograis’ WBC junior welterweight belt at the Chase Center, home to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, California.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix was the first to report the new replacement. Boxing Scene has confirmed that it was the real Mannix and not an AI version of the award-winning boxing and basketball writer.

Bridges (9-1, 4KOs) will attempt the second defense of the IBF bantamweight title in her first bout in the U.S. in nearly four years. The 37-year-old New South Wales native won her title in a ten-round decision over Maria Cecilia Roman last March at First Direct Arena in Leeds, England. She followed up with an eighth-round knockout of countrywoman and bitter rival Shannon O’Connell last December 10 also at First Direct Arena.

Most of this year was spent recovering from injuries before she secured a place on the Prograis-Haney card. She will fight in the U.S. for just the second time; her previous performance came in February 2020, just prior to the pandemic.

Bridges was previously due to enter an all-Australia clash versus Mathie (8-1-1, 3KOs), who was in line to challenge for her first title despite having lost her last fight. The Miami-based boxer and model dropped a competitive but clear ten-round decision to Ramla Ali on February 4 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City.

Yoshida, the 35-year-old Japanese boxer relocated to New York in search of advancing her career. Her post title reign journey began with a win over Indeya Smith on April 27 at Sony Hall in New York City. Her good fortune ran out in her most recent bout, a ten-round decision over Dallas’ Shurretta Metcalf on November 7 at Edison Ballroom, also in NYC.

Despite the setback, Yoshida made herself available for a shot to become a three-time majort titlist spanning two weight divisions.

Headlining the show, Prograis (29-1, 24KOs) will attempt the second defense of his WBC junior welterweight title. The New Orleans-bred, Houston-based southpaw outpointed Danielto Zorrilla over twelve-rounds in his New Orleans childhood hometown this past June. He now travels to his opponent’s birth town.

Haney (30-0, 15KOs) parks his lineal and unified lightweight championship reign in a bid to become a two-division champ. The 25-year-old was born in San Francisco and lived in Oakland before they relocated to Las Vegas, where he currently resides. The bout will mark his first in the Bay Area.

Jovanni Straffon Tabbed To Face Andy Cruz On Prograis-Haney Card, Pending Visa Approval

A replacement opponent has been secured for Andy Cruz.

BS.com has confirmed that Mexico’s Jovanni Straffon has accepted an offer to face the Olympic Gold medalist and advanced pro boxing rookie. The bout is not yet finalized, but is trending in the right direction for Cruz to maintain his place on the December 9 Regis Prograis-Devin Haney DAZN Pay-Per-View undercard.

The lone remaining issue is for Straffon to obtain his travel visa. Boxing Scene was informed that the process is expected to be completed by Friday, in time for Straffon to cross the border for the scheduled ten-round junior welterweight contest at the Chase Center, home to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, California.

Once settled, Straffon will replace San Antonio’s Hector Tanajara (21-1-1, 6KOs) who—as Boxing Scene previously reported—suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from the crossroads fight.

Cruz (1-0, 0KOs) was adamant about facing an opponent on that level for just his second pro bout.

The former amateur standout—a Gold medalist for Cuba during the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics—defected from his homeland and eventually made his way to the U.S. to embark on his pro career. The Miami-based junior welterweight turned pro on July 15 with a ten-round, unanimous decision over former title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos in Detroit, Michigan.

Straffon (26-5-1, 19KOs) provides a very different look than what Cruz would have seen from Tanajara, a 5’10” orthodox fighter.

Cruz will actually enjoy a three-inch height advantage over Straffon, a 5’6” southpaw from Mexico City who boasts heavier hands than both Tanajara and Burgos.

Straffon won ten in a row at one point, including a first-round knockout of James Tennyson to claim the IBO lightweight title in May 2021 on the road in Manchester, England. He came up short in his immediate return to the UK just four months later in a September 2021 twelve-round, unanimous decision defeat to Maxi Hughes in Leeds.

The setback to Hughes marked a pattern of win one, lose one over his last four starts. Straffon rebounded from a fifth-round stoppage to Zaur Abdullaev last September with a sixth-round knockout of Peru’s Jesus Bravo on July 22 in Metepec, Mexico.

This development comes on the heels of another resolved undercard crisis.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene, IBF bantamweight titlist Ebanie Bridges will now face Miyo Yoshida, a Japan-born, New York City-based former two-time WBO junior bantamweight titlist. Australia’s Bridges was previously due to face countrywoman Avril Mathie, who was pulled from the fight due to an undisclosed injury,

Cruz is part of a four-fight PPV telecast, topped by the WBC junior welterweight title fight.

Prograis (29-1, 24KOs)—a New Orleans-bred two-time titlist now based in the greater Houston area—will attempt the second defense of his second title reign in the evening’s main event.

Las Vegas’s Haney (30-0, 15KOs)—who was born in San Francisco—will move up from lightweight, where he is the recognized lineal and unified WBA, IBF and WBO champion as he bids to become a two-weight champ. The 24-year-old returns to his birth city, where he will fight for the first time atop a show which is approaching sold-out status on current ticket inventory.

Devin Haney Relinquishes All Lightweight Belts Ahead of Regis Prograis WBC 140-Pound Title Challenge

Devin Haney is officially done with the lightweight division.

BS.com has confirmed that the unbeaten lineal champion has given up all remaining physical titles at the weight to campaign at junior welterweight and higher. Haney informed ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger of the decision to relinquish the WBA, IBF and WBO titles he claimed last June.

The move comes as Las Vegas’ Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) will challenge WBC junior welterweight titlist Regis Prograis on December 9 at the Chase Center in his birth town of San Francisco, California.

Haney appeared on borrowed time at lightweight, even headed into his May 20 unanimous decision victory over former three-division titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko in Las Vegas. The win marked the second successful defense of the undisputed lightweight championship and Haney’s seventh overall of the WBC title.

The sanctioning bodies began prodding the 25-year-old of his future title status earlier this summer. First was the WBO, who checked in to see if Haney would move up to junior welterweight to potentially challenge lineal and WBO 140-pound king Teofimo Lopez. Haney was then on the clock with the WBC, who ordered a mandatory title defense versus unbeaten Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs).

Haney informed the WBC of his decision to instead challenge for its 140-pound belt, at which point he was downgraded to ‘Champion in Recess’ at lightweight. Stevenson won the vacant WBC 135-pound title in a twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over Edwin De Los Santos on November 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

No other mandatories were yet ordered, but Haney decided to let go of the belts rather than have the sanctioning bodies pick them off one at a time.

Haney held the WBA ‘Super’ title which will be removed from existence per the organization’s ongoing title reduction policy. Baltimore-bred knockout artist and boxing superstar Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) will convert his ‘Regular’ title into the WBA’s full belt at the weight.

It has been reported by several outlets that former titlists George Kambosos and Lomachenko are in talks to fight for what would now be a vacant title fight. Kambosos beat Lopez via split decision in their November 2021 thriller to win the lineal and unified WBA, IBF and WBO championship, which he lost to Haney in their undisputed championship last June in Melbourne.

Kambosos lost to Haney in their rematch last October but worked his way back into contention with a twelve-round points win over England’s Maxi Hughes. Their July 22 clash was for the number-two position in the IBF lightweight rankings. He is now the highest rated available contender, after Argentina’s Gustavo Lemos was removed after badly missing weight for a planned but ultimately canceled stay-busy fight.

Lomachecko became the benefactor of that development. The Ukrainian southpaw is ranked number three by the IBF and number one with the WBO.

Should the Kambosos fight materlalize, the WBO belt would then be up for grabs between the two highest ranked and available contenders. K2 Promotions-Ukraine founder Alex Krassyuk openly campaigned during the WBO convention for Denys Berinchyk to be assured a shot at the title should it become available.

Immediately following Berinchyk is Mexico City’s Isaac Cruz, who is also ranked number one with the WBA and has long campaigned for a rematch versus Davis. One spot below Cruz is Tijuana knockout artist Angel Fierro (22-1-2, 17 KOs), who is promoted by BXSTRS and Matchroom Boxing.

Credible opponent who poses significant risk for Haney. But, Haney should be able to handle it. Prograis does seem to be on the decline from near the top of a division that (in retrospect) was not all that strong at the zenith of his career.

Regis still has enough pop to hurt and potentially stop Haney, though.
