Gym Flooring

Here in South Korea, most of the boxing gyms have smooth, glossy hardwood floors. When you sweat (which I do, by the bucket) you're expected to grab a mop between rounds and clean-up after yourself.

It's a pain in the ass, and it's slippery as hell until it's cleaned-up. And even after mopping, it can still be pretty slippery.

What other material can floors be covered with?

Back in Canada, our gym had concrete floors. A little tough on the knees, etc. The heavybag room had a flat carpetted floor.

What do you think is the best floor for a boxing gym?

When i was fighting, we had this at our gym.

The timber flooring is better not only on the knees but also the bones in ones feet, concrete can lead to stress fractures of the bones in ones feet as well as shin splints, try locating some polypropylene carpet Joe, it's cheep, hard wearing and stain proof mate, and just roll it out over the timber floor. The rubber jig-saw mats that are popular are very expensive (at least here, $100+ p/sm) and are a prick to skip on.

Thanks for the replies. Re: the link, there are quite a few options there. I wonder which would be best for a boxing gym floor? I wouldn't want any "grip" at all to the rubber.

And dberry, the polypropylene carpet was actually what I had in mind, but I hadn't known what it was called. But I wonder how often the carpet in a boxing gym would have to be cleaned? Here in Korea, boxing gyms can't look or smell like boxing gyms. Haha, seriously, image is everything.

Hope to get some more replies. By the way, I'll be opening my gym here in 2~4 years (4 years if I have to do it on my own, 2 years if my buddy doesn't back out).

And 'til then, I'll be picking people's brains regarding gym set-ups :)

hello JB. can you tell me what you decided to go with for your flooring. i am just starting to get involved with a person in Belize who is opening up a boxing gym and just word floor put in for now. thx bw

I am just following and reading up on the posts regarding boxing floor suggestions.

if not the rubber .. which would have a grip and hard to skip. what is another good
suggestion to put over wood plank. looking for a bit of bounce and easy maintenance.
