WBA sanction Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jnr for December 14

Lamont Roach Jnr has been given “special permission” to move up from junior lightweight to fight Gervonta “Tank” Davis for the WBA lightweight title on December 14.

Roach Jnr, 29, is the WBA champion at 130lbs; the sanctioning body has approved of a request made by his promoters to allow him to enter what would represent the biggest fight of his career without being stripped of his title.

“NoXcuse Boxing Promotions sent the formal request on September 13, which was received by the committee to be considered and consulted with the team of Albert Batyrgaziev, who is the mandatory 130lbs challenger,” the WBA revealed.

“After the respective analysis and based on the internal rules of the organization, it was decided to grant the request to Roach under certain conditions.

“If Roach beats Davis in the fight, he will be given five days to send his decision to the WBA on which of the two titles he will keep and defend. On the other hand, if he were to lose the bout, he will be required to fight the official 130lbs challenger within 120 days of the Davis fight.

“Rule C.16 states that the WBA may modify the periods for mandatory defenses for good cause, either in response to a request for special permission or on its own initiative. For its part, rules C.46.a e and g read that the body may modify or suspend the strict application of these rules when the WBA believes them to be justified in its sole discretion to accommodate special circumstances.

“Those reasons include ‘participating in an optional title defense’, ‘participating in a bout of recognized importance and significance to the boxing world’, or ‘extending or otherwise modifying a mandatory defense period’.

It was in June, in Washington DC on a ProBox TV promotion, that Roach made the first defence of his title by stopping Feargal McCrory. He had previously won it in victory over Hector Garcia.

Less than two weeks earlier, also in June, the 29-year-old Davis stopped Frank Martin in Las Vegas.

Gervonta Davis to defend lightweight title vs. Lamont Roach

Boxing star Gervonta Davis will defend his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on Dec. 14 in Houston, it was announced Sunday evening.

Baltimore's Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is ranked ESPN's No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer. He is coming off a spectacular eight-round KO of Frank Martin in June. The bout was Davis' first since a 44-day jail stint last summer for violating the terms of house arrest stemming from a November 2020 hit-and-run incident.

Davis, 29, was in negotiations to meet future Hall of Famer Vasiliy Lomachenko in a high-stakes bout this fall, but after talks collapsed, Davis ended up with a far less appealing bout.

Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) will be moving up from 130 pounds, where he reigns as WBA champion and is ranked No. 5 by ESPN. Against Davis, he'll be installed as a major underdog.

Davis, from Washington, D.C., won the title with a split-decision victory over Hector Luis Garcia in November. Roach retained his belt with an eighth-round TKO of Feargal McCrory in June.

Tank should really step up his game. This doesn't seem like a big challenge for him. I hoped for a Teofimo Lopez fight at 140lbs...
I would have expected PBC to take a little more risks with their top fighters to keep up with the Riyad season cards.

Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. Tops Dec. 14 PBC on Prime Video PPV In Houston, Texas

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis now has an official date and location for his second fight of the year.

The Ring’s No. 8 pound-for-pound fighter will defend his WBA lightweight title versus Lamont Roach Jr., who moves up in weight. Their scheduled 12-round bout will headline a Dec. 14 PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View event from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The event was confirmed by PBC on Sunday evening.

Davis (30-0, 28 knockouts) will attempt the second defense of the full version of the WBA lightweight title. The unbeaten Baltimore native previously held the ‘Regular’ version of the belt before he was upgraded upon the divisional departure of Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs; 1 No-Contest) last year.

Prior to securing this fight, Davis and his team sought a unification bout versus reigning IBF lightweight titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko. Such a fight was targeted for November, but Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), who declined and instead opted to sit out the balance of the year.

A path was eventually created for Roach (25-1-1, 10 knockouts) to enter the equation. The WBA 130-pound titlist was previously summoned to next face interim titlist Albert Batyrgaziev earlier this summer. However, a one-time exception was granted to instead challenge Davis at the higher weight.

With a win, Roach will then have to determine whether he will remain at lightweight or will return to 130. A loss will leave him on the hook to next face Batyrgaziev (12-0, 8 KOs) within 120-days of his fight versus Davis.

Davis and Roach both scored eighth-round knockout wins two weeks apart versus unbeaten challengers.

Davis’ moment came versus Frank Martin atop a June 15 PBC on Prime PPV in Las Vegas. The bout was competitive until it wasn’t. Davis eventually caught up to Martin and put him away for his fourth consecutive knockout.

Roach, stopped unbeaten Feargal McCrory (16-1, 8 KOs) in the eighth on June 28 in Washington, D.C. The night marked the first home game in nearly seven years for Roach, The Ring’s No. 4-rated junior lightweight from Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Prior to that came his first title win. Roach scored a dramatic 12th round knockdown to outpoint and unseat WBA 130-pound titlist Hector Luis Garcia (16-2, 10 KOs). Overall, Roach has won six in a row. His lone defeat came in a Nov. 2019 decision to then-WBO junior lightweight beltholder Jamel Herring in Fresno, California.

Brandon Figueroa vs Stephen Fulton rematch set for Tank Davis undercard

Brandon Figueroa and Stephen Fulton will meet in a featherweight rematch on Dec. 14, featuring on the Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs Lamont Roach pay-per-view undercard.

ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger reported the news earlier this evening.

Figueroa (25-1-1, 19 KO) and Fulton (22-1, 8 KO) met as super bantamweights back in 2021, with Fulton winning a debated majority decision in a really good fight that unified the WBC and WBO titles.

Since then, Fulton lost his belts to Naoya Inoue in the summer of 2023, while Figueroa moved up to featherweight in 2022, and has gone 3-0 at the weight, claiming the interim WBC belt with his win over Mark Magsayo in Mar. 2023.

Fulton also moved up to featherweight in his last bout, a Sept. 14 win over Carlos Castro, whom Figueroa had beaten in his own move to 126 lbs a couple of years ago.

The pay-per-view undercard is also expected to feature Alberto Puello defending the WBC super lightweight title against Sandor Martin.

This is why you have these fights at the end of the year.
Everyone can party and a guy nicknamed cornflake can get on the card.

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jnr rescheduled to March 1

Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jnr were supposed to square off December 14 at the Toyota Center in Houston but the fight, first announced on October 6, is no longer taking place this year.

Multiple sources informed of PBC’s plans for WBA lightweight champion Davis told BS on Tuesday that the matchup has now been moved to March 1. The bout will be a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view event, with the location and venue to be announced at a later time.

The Toyota Center in Houston is not in play for March 1 because the Houston Rockets play the Sacramento Kings that night.

According to one source, a likely destination for the fight could be the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where Davis knocked out Rolando Romero in 2022.

Davis promoter Leonard Ellerbe told BS that “Tank” will announce the fight’s location “very soon.”

“Stay tuned,” Ellerbe told BS on Tuesday. “Lamont Roach is still the opponent. It’s all about timing. It’s Tank over everybody. None of these guys can fornicate with Tank – not one of them. I’m excited to see him get these names out of the way because it’s going to happen. I don’t want to say anybody’s name, but it’s just a matter of time. Line them up, and Tank is going to knock each of them down, whomever that might be.”

Davis has been a massive main event draw and box office success in recent years across several major markets in the United States including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Atlanta, San Antonio, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.

The Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.—the venue where Davis broke the all-time gate record in 2023 against Hector Luis Garcia with ticket revenue reaching $5.185 million and a sellout crowd of 19,731 paid attendees—is also not in consideration for March 1, as there is both a college basketball game and an NHL game being held at the venue on the same day.

The arena would have been a viable option otherwise, especially since Davis is from Baltimore and Roach was born in Washington D.C. and now resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Davis, 30-0 (28 KOs), last fought in June and knocked out Frank Martin in the eighth round. It was his first fight since April 2023 when he knocked out Ryan Garcia in seven rounds. Davis was looking to face IBF lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko on November 2, but the Ukrainian backed out of negotiations earlier this year.

Tank’s team then turned the page to Roach.

Roach, who is 25-1-1 (10 KOs), dropped Feargal McCrory three times and scored an eight-round TKO win in June to capture the WBA 130-pound title.

The WBA gave Roach special permission to move up in weight and face Davis for its lightweight title.

Gervonta Davis to face Lamont Roach in Brooklyn on March 1

Gervonta Davis will defend his WBA lightweight title against WBA 130-pound champ Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on March 1, it was confirmed on Friday. According to a press release from Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), the fight will be officially announced at a press conference at the Barclays Center on Tuesday.

Davis, 30-0 (28 KOs), will be making his first appearance in the ring since knocking out Frank Martin in the eighth round at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on June 15. Roach, 25-1-1 (10 KOs), fell short in his first attempt at a title, dropping a decision to Jamel Herring for the WBO belt in 2019, but captured the WBA strap via a split decision win over Hector Garcia last November before defending it with a knockout of previously undefeated Feargal McCrory in June.

Davis and Roach had originally been scheduled to face off in December in Houston, but the fight was moved for unspecified reasons.

The bout will headline a PBC on Prime pay-per-view. The undercard has not yet been announced.

David apparently is ready to retire in 2025.
Something to do with the birth of his child.

Say what you want about his ability etc. but since he beat Pedraza.. he hasn’t impressed.

Yes the names on his resume look good. But then yu go into each of them.. there’s always something about each one.
