Sebastian Fundora to rematch Tim Tszyu; Xander Zayas and Jorge Garcia Perez to contest vacant WBO 154lbs title

WBC and WBO junior-middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora will not participate in Friday’s scheduled purse bid for his mandatory WBO title defense against Xander Zayas, sources have told Boxing Scene. Fundora will instead fight old rival Tim Tszyu at the Las Vegas T-Mobile Arena with just the WBC belt up for grabs. July 19 is a possible date for the rematch but Fundora's promoter Sampson Lewkowicz told Boxing Scene that nothing has yet been finalized, with three dates in July and August under consideration.

Fundora’s decision to take on his former foe, the WBC No. 6 who is unranked by the WBO, means that he will be stripped of the WBO title, leaving No. 1 contender Zayas to face No. 2 Jorge Garcia Perez for the vacant strap.

Purse bids for that vacant championship bout will go ahead on Friday in place of Fundora-Zayas, with any promoter free to stake their claim to the contest.

Sampson Boxing and Zayas’ promoters Top Rank had previously failed to agree terms for the WBO-ordered bout.

Xander Zayas, Jorge Garcia Perez reach agreement for title fight

Xander Zayas and Jorge Garcia Perez are set – almost – to move forward with the first major title fight of their respective careers.

The two sides have reached an agreement in principle for their ordered vacant WBO junior middleweight title fight, the sanctioning body confirmed on Tuesday. The development came just days after the fight was formally ordered over the weekend.

“The WBO confirms that Top Rank, Golden Boy, and Zanfer Promotions have reached an agreement for the subject matter bout,” WBO president Gustavo Olivieri informed BS and other media outlets. “Official fight date & venue to be announced.”

Zayas, 21-0 (13 KOs) – a 22-year-old Puerto Rican contender based in South Florida – is promoted by Top Rank. Mexico’s Perez, 33-4 (26 KOs), is represented by Golden Boy Promotions.

The need for the fight arose shortly after Sebastian Fundora, 22-1-1 (14 KOs), vacated the belt in lieu of moving forward with his ordered mandatory title defense against Zayas. Their fight was ordered shortly after Fundora’s March 22 knockout win over Chordale Booker at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.

Zayas joined Fundora in the ring that evening to begin the starting point for talks. However, the two sides never came close to reaching terms.

A purse bid hearing was ordered, but Fundora – who still holds the WBC belt – instead vacated the title in favor of a contractually bound rematch with Australia’s Tim Tszyu, 25-2 (18 KOs). Their second act is scheduled for July 19 at a Las Vegas venue to be determined.

The conversation then shifted to Zayas and the next-highest-rated available contender.

It proved to be perfect timing for Perez, who is riding an eight-fight win streak. His latest victory was by far the biggest of his career to date, a split decision over Charles Conwell, who had come into their April 19 clash unbeaten.

A win by Conwell would have left the 2016 U.S. Olympian in prime position to challenge for his first title.

Even with Perez entering the mix, it still left Golden Boy – which also promotes Conwell – in the conversation.

Zayas was confirmed as the WBO mandatory when the sanctioning body acknowledged that Terence “Bud” Crawford, 41-0 (31 KOs), was moving on – and up in weight – to a superfight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September. Their fight will take place at super middleweight, for Alvarez’s undisputed championship.

That opened the door for Zayas to secure his first major title fight. He previously solidified his place in line with a ninth-round knockout of unbeaten Slawa Somper. Their ESPN-aired bout took place on February 14 from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City.

XANDER ZAYAS-JORGA GARCIA PEREZ CONFIRMED FOR JULY 26 TO HEADLINE TOP RANK'S FINAL ESPN SHOW

Top Rank announced Thursday what is planned to be the last telecast of the prominent promotional company’s eight-year content partnership with ESPN.

Xander Zayas (21-0, 13 KOs), of Sunrise, Florida, and Mexico’s Jorge Garcia Perez (33-4, 26 KOs) will fight for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title in the 12-round main event ESPN will televise July 26 from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Brooklyn’s Bruce "Shu Shu" Carrington (15-0, 9 KOs) and Namibia’s Mateus Heita (14-0, 9 KOs) are scheduled to box for the WBC’s interim featherweight title in the 12-round co-feature.

The opener of ESPN’s tripleheader July 26 will feature Emiliano Vargas (14-0, 12 KOs), a lightweight prospect from Las Vegas, in an eight-round bout against Ecuador’s Alexander Espinoza (20-3-1, 9 KOs).

The Ring and other outlets reported three months ago that ESPN executives informed promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank president Todd duBoef that it would not renew its output deal with the company.

Top Rank has been the exclusive supplier of ESPN’s boxing content since July 2017, when then-unknown Brisbane, Australia, underdog Jeff Horn, fighting in his hometown, upset Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao unanimously on points and took the WBO welterweight title from him at Suncorp Stadium.

Top Rank agreed to a seven-year deal with ESPN in 2018 once it attracted the type of viewership, often more than 1 million on average, in its first year. Viewership, however, has steadily declined since then, though that is true of most sports broadcast on linear television in the United States.

Top Rank has not announced which platform will televise and/or stream its cards after July 26.

Zayas, 22, and Garcia, 28, will fight for an unclaimed WBO belt Sebastian Fundora (22-1-1, 14 KOs) gave up to participate in a rematch with former WBO champ Tim Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs) on July 19 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Zayas is ranked No. 1 by the WBO, one spot ahead of the second-rated Garcia Perez.

Garcia Perez, who is ranked No. 10 by The Ring, upset previously unbeaten contender Charles Conwell (21-1, 16 KOs) by split decision in his last fight, a 12-rounder April 19 at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California.

Carrington, 28, is the WBC’s No. 1 contender in the 126-pound division for Stephen Fulton’s title and The Ring’s seventh-ranked featherweight. Heita, 27, is ranked 13th by the WBC and is not ranked by The Ring.

Xander Zayas matched with Jorge Garcia for vacant WBO 154lbs title in New York on July 26

Xander Zayas will take on Mexican Jorge Garcia for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title in New York on Saturday, July 26.

They will fight inside The Theater, Madison Square Garden, on a bill that also features Brooklyn contender Bruce Carrington against Namibia’s Mateus Heita who meet for the WBC interim title at featherweight.

The TV portion of the card is rounded out with an eight-rounder that sees Mexican American prospect Emiliano Fernando Vargas paired with Ecuador’s Alexander Espinoza at junior welterweight.

Zayas is 21-0 (13 KOs) and aiming to be the next great champion from Puerto Rico. He signed with Top Rank aged 16, and made his debut at 17.

“This is a dream I’ve worked hard for my entire life,” said Zayas. “I’ve got a good opponent in Jorge Garcia, a Mexican hungry to become a world champion. But I’m ready to raise the Puerto Rican flag high in victory and become a world champion at 22 years old. See you all on July 26.”

On his way up the ladder, Zayas has defeated the likes of Elias Espadas, Patrick Teixeira, and Slawa Spomer.

Garcia, who has a 33-4 (26 KOs) record, has won his last eight which started with a seventh-round stoppage of then-undefeated Hector Andres Reyes.

In April, he scored a contender for Upset of the Year when he took the undefeated record of Charles Conwell, a victory that has parlayed into a NO. 2 ranking with the WBO and his title fight with Zayas.

“A lot of people thought I wasn’t going to win my last fight, but I scored a stunning upset,” said Garcia. “Even though I was the underdog, I shocked the world. This fight won’t be any different. Becoming a world champion is my dream, and I’m ready to make it come true on July 26 with a dominant win over Xander Zayas. Mexico will have a new champion this summer.”

Carrington is now 15-0 (9 KOs) and has been calling out the leading featherweight names, without reply.

He’s No. 1 with the WBC and WBO, No. 2 with the WBA, and No. 4 with the IBF, having gone 4-0 last year.
“It’s always a thrill to fight in my city, and I can’t wait to bring the ‘Shu Shu Show’ back to The Theater at Madison Square Garden,” Carrington said. “The featherweight division is full of champions who have refused my challenge, so I credit Heida for accepting. That said, I will take out my frustration on him on July 26 and continue putting the division on notice.”
The 14-0 (9 KOs) Heita will hope to follow in the footsteps of his countrymen Julius Indongo, Paulus Moses, and Paulus Ambunda. He turned pro in 2018 and was 9-0 at junior featherweight before he moved up in weight.

“I’ve proven to the world that I’m a world-class boxer, and facing the best has always been my ambition because I believe I’m destined for greatness,” said Heita. “I see Bruce as just another obstacle to becoming a world champion. There’s nothing particularly special about him — he’s simply another challenge I will overcome.”
The promising Vargas, undefeated in 14 with 12 stoppage wins, is the youngest son of former champion Fernando Vargas and is entering his third year as a pro. Now aged 20, the junior welterweight prospect joked: “Like 50 Cent said, I run New York. All jokes aside, I’m ready to perform on the biggest stage and continue to win,” Vargas said. “Each fight is one step closer to becoming the world champion God called me to be.”

Also on the bill, second-generation Puerto Rican star Juanmita Lopez De Jesus, 2-0 (1 KO), boxes and he is joined by debutant and former Team USA amateur star Julius ‘JuJu’ Ballo.
Lopez boxes over four rounds against Jorge Gonzalez-Sanchez (5-2, 4 KOs), and the 22-year-old Ballo has been matched with Brandan Ayala (2-0, 1 KO) over four-rounds at featherweight bout.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is hoping young Puerto Rican star Zayas delivers on his talent.

“When we signed Xander at the age of 16, he was a teenager with all the potential in the world,” said Zayas. “He’s now an accomplished young contender with a tremendous opportunity to win his first world title. Jorge Garcia has been impressive lately, and I expect an action-packed, dramatic main event at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.”

Bruce Carrington vs Mateus Heita interim title fight joins Zayas vs Garcia on July 26th

Bruce Carrington will fight for his first title on July 26th at The Theater at Madison Square Garden

Top Rank has officially announced both the previously revealed July 26th super welterweight title fight between Xander Zayas and Jorge Garcia Perez and its undercard lineup, which includes an unexpected title bout and a number of its top young talents.

”This is a dream I’ve worked hard for my entire life. I’ve got a good opponent in Jorge Garcia, a Mexican hungry to become a world champion,” Zayas said. “But I’m ready to raise the Puerto Rican flag high in victory and become a world champion at 22 years old. See you all on July 26.”

The co-feature sees top-ranked WBC featherweight contender Bruce Carrington (15-0, 9 KO) battle no. 14 Mateus Heita (14-0, 9 KO) for the interim title. It’s unclear why the hardware is necessary, but this does lend credence to rumors that champion Stephen Fulton will move up to challenge O’Shaquie Foster for the super featherweight belt. Alternatively, “champion in recess” Rey Vargas could be stepping in to fight “Cool Boy.”

Whatever the case, Heita will be fighting outside his native Namibia for the first time and taking a gargantuan step up in class against “Shu Shu.”

The main card opener pits 20-year-old Emiliano Vargas (14-0, 12 KO), the most promising scion of Fernando, against Alexander Espinoza (23-7-3, 8 KO). Ecuador’s Espinoza is a well-traveled B-side, facing and falling to the likes of Mikhail Aloyan, Kash Farooq, Andrew Moloney, Peter Mcgrail, and most recently Omar Trinidad over the years.

“Like 50 Cent said, I run New York. All jokes aside, I’m ready to perform on the biggest stage and continue to win,” Vargas said. “Each fight is one step closer to becoming the world champion God called me to be.”

The ESPN+ prelims most notably feature the latest from Puerto Rican Olympian Juanmita Lopez (2-0, 1 KO).

Rohan Polanco-Quinton Randall to support Xander Zayas-Jorge Garcia

The undercard for the Xander Zayas-Jorge Garcia fight set for July 26 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York was fleshed out Thursday, with Rohan Polanco slated to take on Quinton Randall in a 10-round welterweight bout.

Polanco-Randall will close out the ESPN+ stream of the event undercard, which will also feature Dominican Republic featherweight Yan Santana, 14-0 (12 KOs) in a 10-rounder against Mexico’s Aaron Alameda, 30-2 (17 KOs); Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov, 15-0 (14 KOs), against Italy’s Gianmarco Cardillo, 12-1-2 (2 KOs); and .

Chief support for Zayas-Garcia, a vacant junior middleweight world title bout, will be the interim featherweight title fight between Bruce Carrington and Mateus Heita, and a junior welterweight eight-rounder between Emiliano Vargas and Alexander Espinoza, which will make up the featured ESPN-televised portion of the Top Rank card.

Polanco, 16-0 (10 KOs), who blanked Fabian Maidana in a unanimous decision last month – already his second fight of 2025 after a February knockout of Jean Carlos Torres.

Houston’s Randall, 15-2-1 (3 KOs), has rebounded from back-to-back decision losses to Gor Yeritsyan and Brian Norman Jnr with a pair of points wins over modest opposition.

Santana, 14-0 (12 KOs), most recently whitewashed Mexico’s Edwin Palomares, while Alameda, 30-2 (17 KOs), has won five straight – including four stoppages – since dropping decisions to Angelo Leo and Luis Nery:

Additionally, Steven Navarro, 6-0 (5 KOs), from Inglewood, California, will meet Cristopher Rios, 11-2 (7 KOs), in a junior bantamweight eight-rounder on the undercard.
