Amir Khan Relaunches Promotional Outfit For ‘Explosive’ Fight Night In Africa

Amir Khan steps into the promoter’s seat, turning his focus to Ghana in an ambitious bid to reinvigorate African boxing.

On June 13, in partnership with Legacy Promotions, the former unified world champion brings a high-profile fight night to Accra – an event that they hope will mark the start of a new international boxing frontier.

Backed by streaming service DAZN, the ‘explosive’ card will be headlined by American cruiserweight Andrew Tabiti (21-2, 17 KOs) against local standout Jacob Dickson (14-1, 13 KOs), with British fighter Ohara Davies (25-4, 18 KOs) returning from a brief retirement in the co-main event to face Tanzania’s Mohammed Aliseni (22-9-3, 13 KOs).

On the ‘historic night, Khan said:

“Ghana is a place I would’ve loved to fight. The energy, the history, the passion for boxing is unreal. I’m not in the ring anymore, but I’m still fighting – for the next generation.”

The former world champion has revived his promotional outfit, AK Promotions, specifically for this collaboration with Legacy Promotions, a rising player on the continent. CEO Sharaf Mahama emphasized the goal of creating a recurring platform, saying:

“This isn’t just a boxing event – it’s a statement.”

Africa has often been a talking point rather than a real priority in global boxing and the hopes will be for this event to kick start more focus.

The undercard features several African and international prospects, including Daniel Gorsh vs Theophilus Allotey for the WBO Africa Bantamweight Title, Ahmed Abdula vs Haruna Mohammed for the Ghana National Title and UK-based Shiloh Defreitas as well as Bulgarian Olympic prospect Radoslav Rosenov are also scheduled.

Ohara Davies might ‘keep going’ after June comeback bout

Ohara Davies will return to the ring on June 13 when he boxes at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana.

The junior welterweight veteran will take on 22-9-3 (13 KOs) Tanzanian Mohamed Aliseni over eight rounds, having initially retired in the aftermath of his October defeat to hotshot prospect Adam Azim.

London's Davies is 25-4 (18 KOs) and has lost his last two, having been caught cold by Ismael Barroso in one in Las Vegas and then halted in eight by the quick-fisted Azim in London.

“It’s a comeback,” Davies told BS. “I’ve been away. I haven’t fought for about seven, eight months now, so it’s been a while.

“The lure of bringing me back is just the opportunity to fight in my parents’ hometown. My mum and my dad are from Ghana, and I’ve got Ghanaian blood in my veins.

“When the opportunity came to go out there and box, I started thinking about how I can help bring eyes to Ghana, to sport in Ghana, and how I can help up-and-coming fighters from Ghana that might aspire to get far in boxing to be the next Anthony Joshua or the next Azumah Nelson. If I can help them to achieve their goals and also I can benefit my own career in the process, it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Amir Khan is promoting the event, along with Sharaf Mahama, and the headliner pits Andrew Taibiti against Jacob Dickson at cruiserweight.

Davies, however, might not be one and done in terms of a comeback.

“I'll see how it goes,” he said.

“I’ll see how I’m feeling, and then if I feel good, then I’ll keep going. As of now, I do feel good. As of now, I’m back, and after this fight, I’m going to continue fighting.”

He is still managed by Lee Eaton, and said it was Elliott Amoakoh (known in the trade as Napper) who landed him a spot on the show. “Napper” works with Chris Eubank Jnr, and first told Davies about the show.

Martin Malcolmson will be training Davies, along with Juniro Saba – once considered a very bright boxing talent.
“These guys are great,” said Davies. “They’re great boxing coaches, but they’re just not known as of yet, but I feel like in time, with the skills and the expertise they’ve got, and the knowledge in boxing, I feel like these coaches can reach the top, and I’m in a good place right now.”

And it is not going out having been winless in his last two that has made Davies return, because he was satisfied with his efforts in his gallant showing against Azim.

“Listen, I feel like I went out, I think I put on a good show, I put on a good fight, to be honest, that I was in the fight …” he said. “I should have been stopped a lot earlier, because I couldn’t breathe from that round five. I still went a couple of more rounds, I still wanted to give the fans a show, and to have a bit of grit, and even though I didn’t win the fight, I got stopped, I feel like I went out on my shield, and if that’s how my boxing career was to end, I’m happy for it to end like that. I didn’t quit in a corner.”

His career won’t end that way, however, and he will answer the sound of the bell once more – at least – next month.

Ohara Davies grateful for the guidance and support of Anthony Joshua

Ohara Davies has spoken of his appreciation for Anthony Joshua and the support the former heavyweight champion has given him throughout his career.

Davies returns to the ring on Saturday in Ghana after a short-lived retirement and the London welterweight has nothing but respect for what Joshua has done for the sport in England.

“He put British boxing on the map,” said the 33-year-old. “And listen, AJ’s been a savior and he’s been a strong influence in my boxing career too, because I’ve trained in the same gym as him for years and I fought on a few of his undercards. Listen, in one of my fights when I was meant to fight and get a certain amount and then when it was time to get paid, I got more money than I was meant to get because AJ made sure that I got more money than what I was being offered… And just a few small gestures like that, AJ goes out of his way to help everyone.

“AJ’s got a real clean heart. A lot of people, they let the fame get to them. The more famous he gets, the more humble he gets. AJ’s someone I can phone anytime. I can phone him now and get help from him. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m busy.’

“He’s never too busy for anyone. And he's one of a kind because anyone that gets the kind of status and the power that he's got, they don’t have that mindset. And AJ’s a very humble guy. I wish him all the success in the world.”

Joshua is nursing an arm injury before an expected return in the next few months. He has not boxed since a September defeat to Daniel Dubois.
Davies cultivated an image where fans loved to hate him, so he is often booed to the ring. For Joshua, there is an expectation that he needs to be at his best each time, and anything less is a failure.

The pressure on him has always been immense, since claiming gold at his home Olympics in London back in 2012. But Davies contends that the pressure AJ is under is not related to money, but to delivering in the ring.

“He’s got enough money,” Davies explained. “Even if he weren’t being paid to fight, he would still fight. A lot of us, the motivation is to get money, to be rich, drive nice cars… the main motivation for him is to be the best, to be world champion.”

However, there are plenty who see Joshua’s defeat to Dubois as a changing of the guard, and one that coincided with Davies losing to another twenty-something in Adam Azim last year before announcing he was retired.

“The first time I met Azim, he was about nine years old,” recalled Davies. “Like, literally a little kid. And I just fought against him and I lost. The same thing when you look at AJ's last fight against Daniel Dubois. I remember being up in Sheffield when AJ was the world champion and he used to spar Joe Joyce. This is a bit before even Joe Joyce turned pro. He used to spar Joyce, Daniel Dubois, Lawrence Okolie. He used to spar all of them. He used to help. AJ would go and spar three rounds each and he’d help them out and they’ll help him out.

“As we’re getting older, we are on a decline and these young guys are now on the increase and he's still got the desire to be the best. But it's harder. And every year that goes by, it becomes harder and harder and harder.”

Davies said he only has “a vague understanding” of the pressure Joshua must find himself under because it’s so great.

And Joshua’s celebrity status and wealth means that envy is never far behind.

Davies reckons that, in victory everyone praises a winner, but in defeat, they might receive sympathy while being condemned under the same person’s breath.

“They’ll say, ‘Oh, I wanted you to win.’ But behind your back, they’re saying, ‘Oh, he’s useless. He’s washed up and he’s done,’ and all the rest of it. A lot of people don’t like him. They’re jealous of him. So many people, you know, they're jealous of him. People that I know, people that we both know and that we've trained with and, you know, people that he gave money to. And a lot of people don't really want to see him win. And I've noticed this. It’s not only from seeing what’s happening in my boxing career. I look at AJ's boxing career and if these people can be so invested in him, if they can love him so much at one point and now they hate him and they want him to lose, I can’t expect any better from them. It's just people.”

Got to love Amir, how does he get talked into these wacky ideas? anyway I hope it works somehow. He’s got to have a lot of money still, and no shortage of people advising him on how to spend it.

Anyway, promoting a fight card in Ghana, you wouldn’t see that one coming.

And O’Hara Davies, I think I saw him a couple of months ago carrying a huge TV in Brentford. I was gonna say something, but couldn’t think of anything to say

Sounds like AJ is really a genuine nice person, despite all the flak he gets

African promotions always make me think of Warren Stowe fighting in Cape Town back in '95, anyone else remember that? He ended up diving under the ring after bullets started flying and a security guard was shot dead.
