“Correa inflicted a severe body beating on Valdez. He dominated Valdez in the first round, landing a series of snapping lefts to the stomach, while Valdez occasionally fired an effective hook. Correa caught Valdez with a right hand early in the second round, but Valdez pressed forward and, scoring on a hard left hook took the round. But Valdez was unable to gain an advantage in the last round when Correa scored on a series of rights to the head.... British and Korean judges voted for Valdez and French and Nigerian judges for Correa. It was the ballot of the Panamanian judge, who at first ruled the fight a draw, which swung the decision away from Valdez” (Abilene [Texas] Reporter-News 9-9-72:6-B).

Olympic Games 67kg champion; Munich, Germany. “Correa was given a unanimous decision over Kajdi, but the fight between two outstanding boxers was the best in the final program. Kajdi and Correa traded punches, including a series of violent body exchanges for almost the last six minutes of the fight. Correa was counted ‘eight’ when he went down in an apparent slip in the second round that followed a right to the head from Kajdi” (European Stars and Stripes 9-11-72:28).
