Ray Mercer vs. James "Quick" Tillis

Post by scorpio83 »

12 (or 15) Rounds Heavyweight Bout

Mercer would be outbox by Quick Tillis in the early rounds, but in the later rounds, Mercer would rally and pummel Tillis with jabs and body punches to take a decision. What do you guys think and who do you got?

I’ve seen Tillis up close. I fought on two or three of his undercards. Also trained in the same gym. When serious and focused, he was terrific. Moved like a middleweight. But, he’d get distracted I guess occasionally and put out a head scratcher of a performance. Mercer probably out works him.

One commentator said Tillis was like a great artist in the ring. He does something impressive and then steps back and admires his work.

Against Mercer he probably takes a big lead and then get's stopped late. Then again Mercer could have an off day and lose by decision.

I remember seeing Tillis the first time in the old CYO gym in Chicago. I must’ve been about 18. He had just arrived in Chicago from Tulsa. This would’ve been around 1979 -1980. Somewhere around that time. He came here and made Chicago his home base. He had financial backing from a fella whose name I can’t remember and some others who of course had a few bucks. I don’t think he had Angelo Dundee working with him yet but I think Angelo was with him when he fought Weaver. It’s a bit blurry now, but what’s not blurry is after taking one look at him, I thought, he was a can’t miss. I mean he was impressive. Big guy moving like that , fast as lightning, great footwork, he had it all.

Mercer would stop Tillis in 11 or 12, after trailing majority of the fight.

Expug: I'm very curious if you remember how tall you'd say Tillis is ?

Had to be 6-3 I’d say.

Seemed to be shorter than Greg Page when they fought. And Page was around 6'2"

I'd have Mercer to win a UD over Tillis, but I could see Tillis getting a decision over Mercer too.

The Tillis who fought Tyson would be a real handful for Mercer style-wise. I'd actually favour him in a 10 rounder, but nothing longer than that.

Boxrec has him at 6-2. I’m 6-1 he’s taller than I am. Been a long time though. 1983.
