Chavez just could not deal with Martinez' speed until Martinez opted to try to finish him in the last round, essentially.

Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (9-15-2012)

R1: 10-9 Martinez
R2: 10-9 Martinez
R3: 10-9 Martinez

R8: 10-9 Martinez
R9: 10-9 Martinez
R10: 10-9 Martinez
R11: 10-9 Martinez
R12: 10-8 Chavez Jr. (knockdown)

118-109 Martinez

Lastly, just an astounding performance from Miguel Cotto.

Sergio Martinez vs. Miguel Cotto (6-07-2014)

R1: 10-6 Cotto (three knockdowns)
R2: 10-9 Cotto
R3: 10-9 Cotto

Barrera v Morales 1

R1 : 9-10 Morales strong start by MAB but EM more accurate and more consistent (muted commentary at this point, used to be good at filtering out the bs but too much vodka in me right now to be mentally flexible)

R2 : 10-9 Barrera 19-19 accurate power punches from MAB wins him the first 2 minutes with EM almost keeping up with him punch for punch but MAB pulls away in the last minute. EM took those flush power shots really well.

R3 : 9-10 Morales 28-29 EM out worked MAB, landed more punches and held centre of ring.

R4 : 10-10 38-39 first half to EM, controlled the range and outpunched MAB but MAB cut the ring off and trapped EM effectively in second half. EM too willing to engage close imo and surrenders advantage needlessly

R5 : 9-10 Morales 47-49 on sheer volume. Seems like he took that 4th round personal and was determined to prove that he could beat MAB at his own game.

R6 : 9-10 Morales 56-59 slightly busier in first 2 minutes but much more aggressive in last 30 seconds. Clear round for EM

R7 : 9-10 Morales 65-69 strong start by MAB, seemed like he was timing EM and counter punching very effectively but EM again just totally dominated him at close range in the second half

R8 : 10-9 Barrera 75-78 EM still trying to be the aggressor but slowed noticeably. Good counterpunching from MAB and then seals the deal in the last 10 seconds by going on the offensive. Feels like a turning point.

R9 : 10-9 Barrera 85-87 close round right up to the last 10 seconds but MAB always seemed to be in control of where the fight was happening and was more accurate throughout. EM seems like he has plenty of fight left in him though.

R10: 10-10 95-97 both looking tired and neither seemed to have enough energy to make a decisive move. MAB had the best punch of the round but I think EM landed enough to negate it.

R11: 9-10 Morales 104-107 toughest round of the fight for me to score, pretty even first half but EM controls the range of action really well, thanks to consistent use of the jab for the first time but MAB was never more than a step behind and finished the round strong

R12: 10-8 Barrera 114-115 competitive round for the first 2 minutes but definitely MAB more aggressive and forcing EM to fight on his terms. Don't agree with the knockdown call, but seeing as I have MAB winning the round, I have to give him the extra point

Morales 115-114

Wow, haven't watched this in over 20 years. Thanks to gil and numbers for bringing it to my attention.

Looking forward to 2 and 3, will try to score them while sober.

*"The only reason this hasn't been called a life and death fight by the fighters or their rabid supporters is that it is more important than that"

I'm not the biggest fan of Mr Merchant, but he does have his moments😂 (although I question wether the use of the word rabid would have been deemed appropriate if the fans in question were based further North)

EDIT: seems like I'm way out of step with both numbers and gil on this one

I don’t think that we are that far out in the sense that it makes a huge difference how one scores some of the really close rounds of this fight. Rounds one to four were all very close, for instance, whereas rounds five to seven were more clearly Morales rounds. I happened to have Barrera up three rounds to one going into that stretch, but it could very easily be two to two or three to one the other way, at which point things look quite different by the time the eighth round is reached. It was a brilliant fight and I feel alright with the narrowest of Morales victories, even if I go the other way.

It was a brilliant fight.

You're not really that out of step with me. I love that fight, and have simply watched it as a fan numerous times without bothering to score it. All of those rounds are action packed to the hilt, and many of them could go either way.

I feel like it's appropriate that Morales won the War while Barrera won the Boxing match.

I think for me (at least on this watch) it all hangs on round 11, I actually watched that round again immediately as it ended because I couldn't quite fathom it. I just felt in my gut that it wasn't an even round but I wanted to be certain which way I was giving it.

I just watched that round again. I agree that it was very, very close. I gave it to Barrera very narrowly when I watched it and was scoring the fight the other night.

You have two more fights/wars between Morales and Barrera now if you get to it.

R9 : 10-9 MAB
R10: 10-9 EM
R11 : 10-9 MAB
R12: 10-9 MAB

116-112 Marco Antonio Barrera

I enjoyed this one even more than the first, my kind of fight.
I remembered that Morales slowed considerably around 8 or 9 first time round and I'm sure that Barrera fought the first half of the fight with that in mind. His defensive work in the first 4 rounds, in particular was excellent and I think enough to win him at least the first 2.

Even when his energy levels dropped slightly after round 2 I still felt that he was controlling the pace of the fight, and he did exactly as I expected when Morales got tired and Barrera started to box more aggressively.

Could have been a risky strategy though, because Morales did recover after that dip (as he did in fight 1) and I felt that the big game changer here was Morales swollen right eye.

But once again I have to say that Barrera capitalised on that disadvantage brilliantly. He didn't just spam left hooks at Morales' right side, he used more feints on that side to open up Morales on the left and also he'd shift his centre line way to Morales' right to land a straight right on his blind side.

All in all, a strategic and tactical masterclass by MAB, and if I'm honest I suspect that I might have been slightly biased towards him as he fought the kind of fight that I really admire watching.

Enjoyed your scorecards.

If you haven’t scored Holmes-Spinks I and II, Canelo vs. GGG I and II and Ward-Kovalev I, those are some fights for the ages which we could use more cards for, among others.

I watched Holmes v Spinks 1 and 2 very recently, but I didn't score them.

I've never watched Ward v Kovalev 1.

I'm a bigger fan of G's than I am of Canelo, I'm not going to watch those fights.

I'll rewatch Holmes v Spinks and I'll watch Ward v Kovalev 1. Expect my cards soon.......after I've finished watching and scoring Barrera v Marquez👍
