FORMER heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno is receiving treatment at a mental hospital after being taken from his home by medics.
A police source said officers had assisted in removing the father-of-three from his home near Brentwood, Essex, under the terms of mental health legislation.
He was transferred into the care of a local mental health NHS trust.
Essex Police would only say: "We have been assisting ambulance crews to remove a patient from an address near Brentwood.''
But the source added: "The patient is Frank Bruno. It is my understanding that he has been sectioned.''
He said Bruno, 41, was believed to have been taken to a London hospital.
Witnesses said Bruno was driven away from his home shortly before 7pm. It is believed that police and medics had been at the address for some hours.
Bruno has gone through a painful and costly divorce from wife Laura.
In a radio interview in early August, he launched an attack on the "mugs'' and "creeps'' he believed were trying to portray him in the same light as Mike Tyson.
He said then: "I've had a lot of people in my house, a lot of mugs and a lot of creeps, but I've had a lot of good people and I'll stick with the good people I know.
"It's jealousy and power and money. They're trying to turn me into the English Mike Tyson, but I'm not the English Mike Tyson, I'm the English Frank Bruno I always was.''
He added: "I'm a prisoner in my own home. Just let me chill in my own home.''
Bruno, who lifted the WBC crown when he out-pointed Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in September 1995, has spoken recently of making a boxing comeback despite an eye injury which appeared to have ended his career.

If only the journalist who penned the Sun newspaper headline was as sympathetic as our posters then we wouldn't have had it's first editions on Monday reading "Bonkers Bruno Locked Up".
Thankfully, the huge wave of public outrage at this ignorant piece of journalism caused the paper to do a U-turn and change the story to one more in keeping with the enlightened values of the 21st century.
Too little, too late for this filthy excuse for a newspaper.

What does it say about our cuntry when the piece of trash is still the biggest selling rag?tolstoy wrote:If only the journalist who penned the Sun newspaper headline was as sympathetic as our posters then we wouldn't have had it's first editions on Monday reading "Bonkers Bruno Locked Up".

Have you read the boxing in The Sun? It is truly appalling since Colin Hart left and they replaced him with a tosser called Pat Sheehan. Get this. When he did a story on Marco Antonio Barrera prior to the Naz fight, he said that Barrera had twice lost to ROY JONES! He didn't know the difference between Roy and Junior Jones. It was scandalous, and yet he continues to cover boxing for them.
Interesting little story in today's Liverpool Echo on Bruno:
EVERTON star Wayne Rooney last night wished Frank Bruno a speedy recovery as the ex-world champion boxer continues his battle with psychiatric problems.
The Rooney family have grown close to Bruno after Wayne's younger brother Graham, a promising young boxer himself, stayed at the exfighter's home and was given expert tuition on the fight game.
The pair were also seen together in Liverpool and when Everton played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season many Everton fans were stunned to see Bruno accompanying young Graham in the away end.
Last night, a spokesman for the Rooney family said: "Frank has the best wishes of the Rooney family at this difficult time.
"They all wish him well for his future recovery."
Bruno had been seen wandering the streets of Liverpool looking for a "long lost friend" 48 hours before being locked up in a mental hospital.
Families in Walton told how the ex-world champion knocked on doors.
When the residents of Well Brow Road told Frank the man he wanted did not live there, Bruno stopped and chatted for almost an hour to a crowd that had gathered.
Just two days later, on Monday afternoon, Bruno, 41, was taken to a mental hospital by police and paramedics from his home in Brentwood, Essex.
The former world heavyweight champion was sectioned under the Mental Health Act at Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford.
Marie Rigby, 36, said Bruno happily chatted and was pictured with her son Thomas, four, and his pal, Carl Halford. She said: "I saw a Bentley parked at the end of the road at about 2pm on Saturday afternoon and thought it was strange.
"Then my friend came round and said Frank Bruno was in the street.
"He was posing for photos and signing autographs for the children. I was so surprised when I heard he is ill, he seemed absolutely fine and was great with everyone."
Bruno's chauffeur and a friend stayed in the car.
Carl Halford Snr, 35, said: "He was really friendly, the kids were flocking around him. I don't know what happened to him but he seemed to be acting normal with everyone here."

damn right goz. the sun is absolute trash for people of a childs level of intellect. how many retarded people pick up the sun every morning and learn nothing about world events, instead they clue themselves up on celebrity gossip and rumour, xenophobia and tv soaps.
fornicating morons.
frank Bruno
I was extreamly upset when I heard the latest about Bruno, although I know that he's been having problems for a long time. Its a pity that Frank didn't get some help some years ago, depression is a long debillitating illness that is all to often overlooked by people close to a sufferer. It would be great to see Frank well again and becoming involved in boxing again.... as a trainer, coach or something along those lines. I believe Frank needs to be involved with boxing somehow.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Frank some ten years ago and he was very polite and seemed quite shy.... I wish him a speedy recovery.
