Yes, there was a lot of good competitive bouts and for the most part excellent sportsmanship by the boxers and coaches.

Congrats to the Cincinnati amateur boxing community for hosting an excellent tournament.

What do you think the surprises were? :D I found it surprising that Gary Russell went up two weight classes in 5 months.

Mel - it was the younger brother, Gary III not Gary Jr. Gary Russell III boxed at 138 during the 2006 National J.O.'s and actually went down in weight to 132. I believe Gary Jr. is still going to box at 119 like he did at the National PAL tourney.

I know a lot of fans though Shawn had won his bout and others believed that his opponent should have been DQ'd for repeatedly punching Shawn in the back of the head. I can't really comment since I was getting Jordan ready and only saw about 1 round of the bout. Shawn is a very good boxer and will bounce right back from this loss.

112 - not really too surprising. Marco Rangel is a good boxer and had a strong J.O. background before entering the open class. I saw him defeat Robert Bell in the semi-finals so I knew he was going to be a tough competitor for Barry Dennis in the finals.

It was reported that Charles Hatley pulled out of the tournament with an undisclosed illness on Tuesday.

Luis Ramos went down to 125 this year at the U.S. Championships district tournament. He boxed at 132 last year and his coach felt the lower weight would be better.

Yes, Luis Ramos won the MW Trials at 125. He had previously boxed at 132 and is ranked #3 in that weight class. Luis looked pretty dominant at 125 as he easily won 4 bouts against some excellent boxers - Raynell Williams, Joseph Francisco, Micah Branch and Jesse Carradine. That is impressive for a guy moving down a weight class to be strong enough to dominate in 4 bouts over a 5 day period.
