Yes I said the same thing to my friend at the time. Mesi could've been forgiven for going a bit wild but he took his time and basically did as perfect a job as he could've done.

What's funny about this card is you can pair any of the 6 fighters against eachother and envisage a decent fight. Mesi v Sam for example would be absorbing to say the least.

Sam is as tough as they come and beat Danny mainly cause the Brit couldn't budge him (he was walking through everything Williams threw). BUT, despite Gomez's punches not looking as if they have much it was still enough to keep Sam at bay (which an 17 stone Williams couldn't do).

I still wouldn't write Sam off against a big Heavy (i.e. McCline), speed is the key to victory against Sam, Gomez had it - Danny thought he had it (according to the stories anyway).

Watching Sam last night, you can see exactly why Danny took him lightly. That's no excuse and I still think guys like McCline, maybe even Mesi could see Sam as easy meat (like Williams did) and be in for a big surprise.

But I think Gomez can certainly win a version of the title - IBF, WBO. I think Jones (if he goes back to Heavy) and of course Lewis will be too much.

there is no doubt in my mind that Sam would beat Mesi.

Agreed, but out of the 4 bouts, that was the one I was least interested in. Sam vs Gomez was, on paper a 50:50 fights. I would intrigued to see if Mesi lived up to the hype and I wouldn't have missed Kelly's brave attempt (ruined by McKenzie and Neilly) for the world.

So if the BBC only could get the hour and 15 minutes I'm quite pleased with what they did. It would have been better than say 5 rounds of Sam vs Gomez and 5 rounds of Guinn vs Dokairi (spelling??). We wouldn't have really known what went on in EITHER fight then.

But yes, I'm sure people could have done without an extra hour of Ceefax.

The boxing coverage on the BBC is a total joke. I remember years ago when you could watch a fight almost every other week on Grandstand and almost every Wednesday night on Sportsnight with Harry Carpenter (one of boxing's best commentators IMO).

Now we're lucky to get a fight once a month instead we get meaningless football matches, Davis Cup tennis, yachting, cricket and shitty horseracing.

Brits, please join me in lobbying the BBC to start taking boxing seriously again!
