Barry: Young Stribling (Once Again)

Post by Ric »

My EVERETT DAILY HERALD day-after newspaper account says Strib W-10 Neron @ Beckley, WV, August 2, 1933. BoxRec has it as August 29; and having him fighting in Europe August 2. Can we verify what is accurate? :)

Ric,
You are correct on both, except Strib fought in Rome, Georgia on Aug. 29, 1933; not in Europe!

Barry. The EVERETT DAILY HERALD also reported some interesting facts regarding the circumstances behind this great fighter's death. I will enter them soon. It seems he was going to the hospital where his wife had just given birth to their newest child when he was involved in a motocycle/automobile accident. One foot was amputated. He managed to stay alive for awhile and ask his wife how their baby was doing before he died.

I've made the changes to those two bouts.
And also put in his bio the circumstances surrounding his death.

12-88 results

Post by wouter »

12-1-88:Eugene Speed NC 8 Kent Hardee. Ring Magazine says it's a Wu for Speed. Was the result changed leter? It's interesting to know that Speeds's record going into that fight, acording to the Ring, already contains a NC.
12-8-88:Dwight Davison D10 Willie Wilson. Ring magazine says that's a Wu for Davison.

What's the truth? It must be out there, somewhere....

Young Stribling has nothing to do with these results, as far as I know at least. Sorry about misplacing the topic.

Strib on Aug. 29, 1929

Post by Ric »

Barry & Others,
I have not checked this against another source, but the Daily News Searchlight newspaper of Bremerton, WA reports that on Aug. 29, 1929, Strib W-8 Frankie Wine at Nashville.
We have him W-10 Joe Packo at Evansville.

Also, that his George Cook bout took place Sept. 2 (per the Sept. 3 DNS).

I haven't came across newspaper clips for the two mentioned bouts, but the Joe Packo bout was listed in Chuck Johnston's compiled results from the San Francisco Examiner, as was the George Cook bout. I'll go through ancestry.com and see if there are any other newspaper listing the results.

They met in Beckley WV, August 2, 1933. Andrews record book has it right. Reference for newspaper report: Milwaukee Journal.
