I'm now backing Audley Harrison 100% to become World Champ!
I'm now backing Audley Harrison 100% to become World Champ!
I have always maintained that i was an Audley fan, ever since I saw him winning the Gold Medal at the Olympics!
His Pro career has been a terribble PR disaster and his selection of opponents has alienated the British public to a point where they make jokes that Grannies are being lined up to fight him next!
His Stupid comment about fighting Frank Bruno over Hide looks even more Stupid now!
His last few opponents have been barely alive let alone competetive!
So Why the change!
Well you can hardly say I'm jumping on the Bandwagon as Audley isn't even the Southern area title holder yet!
The reason I'm now backing him is because he came out and finally laid out his plans for the fans and stating that he will be British Champion by the time the 2004 Olympics comes which is September.
This is what we and the BBC always wanted, for him to state that he was serious and now he's done that I'm gonna back him 100%
My loyalties will still be with Danny Williams in any match up between the 2 but I'll gladly celebrate the winner!
So I Call on British Boxing fan's to get behind Audley and support him, the guy is very well spoken and educated and brings a very respectable representation of boxing.
Sure he's made mistakes but from 2004 onwards his fights are going to get much tougher and i urge british fans to support this guy as he will prove all you doubters(including me) wrong!
So what do you guys think, Do you still Doubt him?

I don't "doubt" him, and I don't "believe" in him. Audley is just there.
When he makes a bit of a move and fights some credible opposition I'll show more of an interest I guess.
In the same way I'm not hugely bothered about say Matt Skelon, or Sprott and so on.....
I don't like or dislike them.
Audley has done nothing wrong, but nothing hugely right. I await his next few matchups to sway me one way or the other.....

Well I don't mind admitting I've always had major doubts about Audley. In my opinion he doesn't have the physical strength or punching power to be a world heavyweight champ. Nor does he seem to have a genuine chip on his shoulder in the ring. He looks so vulnerable. He's the Brit equivalent of Calvin Brock - who is unbeaten but clearly going nowhere.
Like I've said before - in 2 years time (which will pass quicker than you think, like it always does) the Klitschko's, Rahman, Ruiz, Tua etc are still going to be around. It's going to take a miracle for Audley to see off those guys assuming he even gets that far which I don't think he will.
Great personality though, made for TV.

Hmmmm.....Audley is just one BIG "Hmmmmmm....."
You really just don't know!
I think he's been very unfairly knocked, afterall all, he is due a reasonable learning curve (like everyone else), and remains undefeated and in my opinion untroubled so far. He's just taken his time about it.
He is a GOOD heavyweight. It just remains to be seen HOW good.
I "think" he'll end up British & Commonwealth champion.....will challenge for an eventual shot at the world title (WBC, WBA...not WBU or some crap) and think he'll get beaten.
The pinnacle of his career will probably be as a 'contender' but never as champ. That's what I prophasise.....
I two years time I can see say...
Tua KO7 Harrison.... or such.

hmmmmmmm is right. audley evokes changing opinions because he himself and his performance is always changing.
i've believed, i've doubted, i've believed 100%, i've doubted 90 %, his workrate has been good, his workrate has been lousy, his punching power has been good, his power has been poor. his accuracy has been excellent, his accuracy has been criticised, his accuracy has been declining, his accuracy has been poor, but then improved to be good, then excellent, then mediocre.
i've run out of predictions for audley but i will say that he CAN make it to the very top. he has the tools, belief and confidence.

Well Eric
I never actually said Audley would become a World Champion!
Joe Mesi is still my No2, behind Tyson of cause!
I just feel Audley brings a good image to boxing and is very well spoken and speaks intelligently about it!
His recent interview with the BBC impressed me greatly where he laid out his up coming plans and as long as he sticks to that, I'll support him!
Of cause I'll still be critical of his choice of opponents but to be honest from 2004 onwards he can no longer fights bums because of tv demands so that's when we'll see if he's FOR REAL!

I really don't think he's going places, I distinctly remember that little fellow whom Skelton blew away wobbling Harrison noticably.
Besides Harrison has a little of the Wladimir Klitschko syndrome about him, when he's pressed he panics and I think when he fights somone who's not intimidated by his size and reach, he'll get steamrolled.

Exactly - in his September 9th outing on ESPN FNF vs. Quinn Navarre, on the few occasions that Navarre actually put a few flurries together and became the aggressor, Harrison looked like a deer caught in the headlights. A guy with a big punch and/or some skills would make him pay severely for that kind of fundamental lapse.mrbassie wrote:I really don't think he's going places, I distinctly remember that little fellow whom Skelton blew away wobbling Harrison noticably.

Agreed. Williams would too I think and Hide definately would, inside two rounds.steve689 wrote:Dont buy it Nasty, heard it all before, Matt Skelton would beat Audley NOW imo.nasty wrote:The reason I'm now backing him is because he came out and finally laid out his plans for the fans and stating that he will be British Champion by the time the 2004 Olympics comes which is September.
Skelton is more hyped up then Harrison has ever been listening to you lot. You lot are normally reliable for hating all British heavyweight prospects so I must admit I'm somewhat disappointed. So because Skelton beat a washed up Holden hes elevated above Harrison. Lets face it if Harrison had faced Holden, most people would have criticised him for that too.
What makes me laugh as well is that many people have been criticising Harrison's first ten oponents yet Skelton's have been alot worse. Also Skelton is either 2 or 4 years older then Harrison.
p.s Please god don't mention the england title.

Well, I don't think he can get out of it now he's said it on national television!
I've always felt that had Audley been 22 rather than 28 when he won the olympics than the Media would have given him far more space to breath!
Let's at least give Audley Credit for getting the BBC to cover boxing again!
I still have doubts about how far Audley will go but my anger towards him has gone somewhat!
But than again I don't pay Audley's wages through the BBC license fee.
You, Steve do so you have the right to ask whether you are getting your money's worth!
Can I ask you Steve and other Audley doubters, What can Audley do to get you on board?
Like I said before, I still hope Danny williams will knock Audley Out if they ever do fight.
Danny is one of the nicest guys in boxing and for Audley to call danny a COCKROACH disgusted me!
Also, Audley has put down Danny at every opportunity even though Audley has NO TITLES and Danny is British and Commonweath Champion!

I liked Audley to start with, but started to see through the lies, he went to America for better opposition aparently and has fought Quinn Navarre and Lisandro Diaz, nuff said. Skelton has stopped British rated Mike Holden and never before stopped (even by Audley) Ratko Draskovic, i would say Matt has progressed better and without the need to bullshit us along the way, plus Audley claimed he would be British champ within three fights but when his third fight arrived he was fighting a Polish bouncer, he's a fraud and makes me laugh now whenever i think about him. If i'm wrong i'll be the first to hold up my hands and admit it but at the moment i think i will be proved correct.
Steve don't you think Audley was trying to grab attention with such statements at the beginning of his career. Lets face it 75% of boxers are cocky, mouthy gits who think they are destined to be the next best thing. If you honestly believed that Audley would be British champion after three fights then your obviously on something. Alot of people because they don't like Audley as a person are so quick to then say hes southern area belt at best.
I don't like Danny Williams at all. I lost all faith in the guy after his "performance" against Sinan Samil Sam in Germany. He proved he's one of these idiot heavyweights who likes to shuffle about the ring like his Ali or something, before getting tagged repeatedly and flattened.
I don't rate Danny Williams anything above a British Champion (and frankly he doesn't have much to beat to get that eh...)

NO! Your wrong here, I don't think there would have been much complaint had Harrison faught Holden after the Ellis fight. Maybe the odd 'why didn't he do it sooner', but Holden is better than any Harrison's opponent. Washed up or not washed up, I still think he'd take Ellis. Even if Harrison decided to fight Holden now, I'd be somewhat happy because he's still a step up. Okay, he's a baby step up, but nevertheless a step forward.Costa wrote:Skelton is more hyped up then Harrison has ever been listening to you lot. Skelton faught Holden within his first 10 bouts, and he's also been fighting regular. Okay, he's older than Harrison - but had Harrison had the same 10 fights as Skelton (IN THE SAME TIME LIMIT) I'd be delighted. After all he's Olympic champion for fcuk's sake. As I have said previously, most Olympians are ready to break the World's top ten by the next Olympics. Harrison is way off the British top 5.
Skelton's victory of Holden does move him above Harrison, and quite rightly cause Audley aint got a better fighter on his pro record.
Lets Judge Audley from 2004
He looks in great shape and he knows he's gotta start proving himself!
Guys like Holden are just punch bags on legs!

Baseless criticism
First of all I'd like to greet all on this board, it's my first ever post here so go easy on me.
I've noticed that all those who doubt Audley Harrison fail to apply any means of constructive criticism, they merely make insinuations but fail to back them up. Yes, Aud did take on Ratko Draskovic and was taken the distance while Skelton stopped him - hell he even got hit back once too, but how can this be used to mock Audley? Skelton managed to stop Draskovic but that's something the likes of Przemyslaw Saleta and Samil Sam couldn't do either, does that mean Skelton would beat such guys? Not necessarily, them failing to stop him is only testimony to the durability of Draskovic and ok, it does prove that Skelton can bang which we all know anyway. This isn't really grounds in which to criticise Aud, if you saw the fight you'd know he was merely content to exploit the guy's durability in order to get rounds and only in the last two rounds did he step it up only for Draskovic to start hugging him and spit his gumshield out in order to hang in there.
Aud really isn't the fraud that some believe him to be, can anyone on this board put forward a heavyweight prospect out there who has taken on better or even the same level of opposition at 13-0? Joe Mesi's guys didn't even have more wins than losses, Guinn had a few victims with positive records but they were mainly rookies with perhaps 2-3 bouts to their name. As for other prospect's 13 victims it's even worse, nothing but debutants and fighters barely weighing in more than the cruiserweight limit.

Re: Baseless criticism
I did, I said Raskoc wobbled Harrison badly and he did, I think I saw one of his earlier milk man or cobbler opponents did as well, can't remember who though and can't be bothered to sift through tapes. Harrison has no chin, and what's more he's a comfort zone fighter: when any pressure is applied to him he panics and spreads his arms out to either side for a second or so before he gets it together to clinch. Sooner or later someone will take the fight to himn and knock him on his arse.Des_Troy wrote:I've noticed that all those who doubt Audley Harrison fail to apply any means of constructive criticism, they merely make insinuations but fail to back them up.

Yawwnnn.....
Has Audley's comp so far been acceptable? YES.
Does he look anything like a legitimate world champ in the making? NOT ON YOUR LIFE.

You must be a big Audley fan to dig up this old thread for a 1st post.
I think the quality of his opponents comes to the fore as a topic becuase
he doesn't look that great beating them. You can fight cruisers, no problem. If you blow them away, no one will complain. BUT, If you scrape points wins against them, you better take the flack like a man.
Also, remember what a Fraud is. A Fraud(ster) is someone who would have you believe something that isn't true. (such as being Brithish champ in a certain amount of time) If you consider that, it's not hard to see why people are warming more to Matt Skelton than Audley.
However, I am prepared to judge him from 2004 onwards.
Bygones be bygones and all that.
