I Once Belted a British Amateur
Boxing fans have short memories, Bollocks. Think of the verdict Johnny Famechon got over here in 1969 for the world featherweight title against Jose Legra. Many felt the flashy Cuban had done enough to hold on to his title, but Famechon, who epitomised the term ring mechanic, boxed solidly for 15 rounds and nicked the verdict. He was massively popular in this country, where he fought on several occasions. Dennie Mancini, the well-known British cutsman, says Famechon was the best boxer he ever worked with.
