USA Olympic Team or Americas' Olympic Team?

Post by kidscoach »

Somehow I have missed something-Does the USA have it's own Olympic Team or have we selected a USA Olympic team that will have to qualify to be on the Americas Olympic Team? And where does all that fit with this World Tournament happening in Chicago? It isn't an "Americas" Olympic team qualifier, is it? There are certainly more than the Americas teams there. I tried to find that article on the USA Boxing website, but it has disappeared. Thanks.

USA will have their own team at the Olympics but the boxers who qualified nationally at the US Olympic Trials will have to qualify at three attempts. The first will be the World Championships where the top 8 (top 4 at 91-91+) qualify.
Then there will be two other qualifiers for every continent. America have six berths at 48-81 kg and three at 91-91+. These qualifiers will be held early next year.

In 2004, the first qualifier was the Pan Am Games. This time, it's the World Championships (ups the ante quite a bit). Each continent will have their own two qualifiers, so the Americas boxers aren't getting screwed. 8)
