Ian burns is now a top ten fighter in world IMO

Aye, go for it mate, no bother. I'm not going to rattle on tonight about my hatred of 'world' titles generally.
This is Burns Night in September

I had a lot of money on Burns to beat Johanneson because I knew Carl was very, very ropey and was seething when Burns didn't have the tools to pull it off. I knew he'd improved a lot but tonight was something else.
When was the last time us English buzzed off a Scottish victory?

How did you know Johannesson was very, very ropey? That was about his peak,in his home town and he could really bang.I know for a fact he has dropped middleweights in sparring. He was quite ruthless at that level at that time.

a superb slice of action, burns high rating was of course highly dubious but martinez was a genuine world champion with quite a reputation. There have been hundreds of less deserving champions for sure.
heres hoping booth and munroe can make it a hat trick

Most had Martinez number 1 or 2, 130 isn't exactly stacked with talent. Neither Solis or Fana are exactly pulling up trees.

F**k anyone who says otherwise. Ricky Burns wiped the floor with a fighter that everyone (including myself) considered to be the best, most dangerous fighter in the division.
ricky has no one to fear after that. and after taking on the main man, he's worth a couple easy defenses before he has to worry about a rematch with that hardy little f***er

don't think he deserved his shot, and he beat a limited, prescott style champ (one shot at a time). he won't be a champ for long, but he did better than nicky cook.
ricky may have not deserved the fight but he fought exceptionally I was out of my seat cheering him on. Who knows what ge can achieve I know one thing me or you can't say we are a world champion so give him credit!
i don't think it will get any better than this for him. i don't see a long title run. but he certainly won it more honestly than alex arthur and you get the impression that he won't let it slip away, like arthur did.
but i think it's a great positive to have not only a british fighter winning a world title, but doing it in a very exciting and competitive battle.
bet arthur and mitchell wish they could still make 130.

You don't think he has a chance against the other champions?

i just don't see him as long term champ material. i appreciate what he's done, winning a terrific fight vs a world class puncher. it was certainly better than mitchell running from prescott.
i'll have to admit, i don't know whom the other champs are.

I wonder who will be Burns' first opponent, at the moment no British fighter ranked in the top 15 with the WBO - that could change though.
Foster Jnr? Sykes? Cook (where is he?)? and I do wonder if Arthur, Mitchell and Johannsson would try and squeeze their frames.
I would personally like to see Burns vs the UK conqueror Kirakosvyan - but somehow I'm not sure of the Risk/Reward factor.... guess it will be an easy fight to make though.

I had money on Martinez KO/TKO but I found myself shouting for Burns from around the 9th onwards. Great performance from him. Well done to him and his team, Billy Nelson played a big role in the corner.

Glad to hear that as Billy comes across as a class act on here. Hope Burns winning offsets the frustration he must be experiencing regarding Simpson losing in such controversial circumstances.
Smith versus Simpson sounds like a no-brainer in terms of a rematch, based on the comments I've read on here and would be good for both fighters in the circumstances - Smith gets a chance to show he's learnt significantly from his first 12-rounder and from facing such stiff opposition, while Simpson gets a deserved second chance.

A bit like Fury vs McDermott II.

that's what i was just thinking on the other burns thread, when i saw the WBO rankings.
makes it interesting with burns losing to johanesson and kirakosyan having two blowouts of johanesson (and scott lawton). but i also think this isn't really the style of a FW boxer. i could see other promoters using that angle, but not burns' promoter. burns has certainly raised his status very far, and he and his team will not be thinking about spilled milk like the johanesson fight.
really interesting burns pulling this off - this could be the highlight of the boxing "season" for ages, even trumping the magnificent 7. because the 2 best fights have already fallen through, some are bound to disappoint anyway, and basically the card might be little more than two excellent double bills.

I'm sure if Burns fought Kirakosvyan there would be options.
All Scottish affair with Paul Appleby? Given John Simpson and Burns are mates and training partners - I cannot see Simpson getting a surprise shot, Appleby might though.
Isn't it amazing, a few years ago this devision seemed to be brimming with talent - we had the likes of Arthur, Mitchell, Cook, Johannson, Gomez - all looking like EBU level and above - other fighters like Docherty, Foster Jnr on the perifery of EBU level - and fighters like Matthews, Morris, Munroe (who looked big at Featherweight when he fought Morris) and a few others (Corcoran, Simpson) who looked like they could make very decent 9 stone 4 fighters..... then we had Choi also!!!!!!!
At one stage, not that long ago really - there would be a very geniune case for Burns to be struggling for a place in the top 5 domestically - now there doesn't seem to be really anyone capable of posing a serious threat.... which is also a compliment to the improvement Burns has made - we are now suggesting that Mitchell needs to chop off his right hand to be the only viable British challenger, or Cook come back from a big exile.

quick question- anyone else wonder if Martinez was struggling at the weight?
he just seemed to gas very quickly- 4th or 5th round he was blowing (although it was a torrid pace to be fair)- and half-folded a couple of times from shots that didn't look that heavy.

The commentators brought that up. Martinez came in at the second lowest weight of his career (according to BoxRec), and that can sometimes be a sign of weight issues.

I know from personal experience what some Scots think of the English.
However whether Scottish, English or Welsh, it is still British to me and I was over the moon when Ricky Burns produced the fight of his life on Saturday to take the belt from a genuinely dangerous man in Martinez.
I could barely look towards to the end of the fight, thinking that Martinez was going to land a bomb and end it.
Terrific night for the Scottish fans and could not have happended to a nicer guy than Ricky Burns. Great stuff.
