I doubt it. No "big SKY push", no ads all week, no SKY Sport News updates, no 'Beyond the Ropes' programmes, no Ringside special, no coverage of the weigh-in.

i agree it wont sell as many, but amir khan fans will still buy this, and the average boxing fan might too, but the casual fan wont even know about primetime, although saying that sky have already promoted this show so alot of people now know the date. but it has to sell atleast 50,000 surley ?

Primetime's problem is they don't advertise enough. Sky may well have publicised the event, but they won't point viewers in the direction of another channel. 50,000? I heard that one Khan PPV only did 25,000, though I don't recall which one and it was only hearsay.

Some good points raised there Glyn. Sky setting PPV dates without knowing who will be fighting was always going to lead us down this road.
It seems that so far, any fight with Haye or Khan is automatically PPV regardless of opposition. The bolstering of under-cards with decent fights, fights that would be main events on Sky's regular 'Fight Night', seems to be Sky's answer to making an event PPV. This time the PPV train, has not only fallen flat on it's face, but it's becoming a farce.
As for what makes an event PPV, well it has to be deemed worthy once the event has been put together unless its a 'Superfight'. If Khan's event had say, Chisora V Fury for the British Title on the undercard, then I'm sure it would've been deemed worthy of PPV. Is Chisora Vs Fury worthy of PPV on it's own? Of course not but again, an event must be put together first to warrant any PPV.
We can't entirely blame anyone for the bad luck that Khan's bill has had but, I think that Khan's team should realise that the event is now not worthy of PPV(I dont think it ever was), bite the bullet and proceed with the Sky Sports 3 'live' showing. Time has run out for the undercard to be bolstered yet again and now they are looking to turn to Primetime to work out a deal that has Khan's team making the most money they can for a regular fight-card.
I personally don't think the Cleverly fight should be PPV either. The card only has three fights on it up to press. Obviously, DeGale and Groves should be a cracker but what happens if one of those has an injury and that fight is off? Are we back in the same position that Khan is in now? Will the PPV get pulled and a regular Sky place be put up?
It would be interesting to see any viewing figures for both Sky and Primetime's PPV events if anyone has any?

Good call. They should have gone for that fight. Easy to advertise and hype up.

'..while advance sales for this Khan-McCloskey bout had reached barely 50...'
50 PPV sales! No wonder Sky pulled it from PPV. So Froch is getting around 50,000 PPV sales on Primetime on average. I reckon Khan will be lucky to get 20,000.

I do largely agree with this, particularly the part I've bolded. Very unproffesional from Sky - they should have waited untill a concrete undercard before agreeing the PPV or stated McCloskey didn't cut it from the word go. It was a tough one for the promotion team to handle though - they obviously wanted a tune up for Bradley and who else was available - this isn't a barely top 50 fighter being rejected - this is a top 15 fighter - and the #2 ranked Brit (I don't want to go there about Nationalities - I hope you know what I mean) - Problem is, Khan isn't in the hotbed of big names - hardly anyone has heard of the Unified (twice) champ. If McCloskey got rejected without a cracking undercard - then who would get accepted.
There are 2 parts I do disagree with.
1) -Hasn't rung any UK promoter..... okay, well we know your contacts so I am sure you are correct here but does it have to be a Uk promoter? They certainly rang other promoters - Macklin vs Gevor was a good fight.... and they clearly asked if Hennessy if Tyson Fury would be available - so they must have called them.
2) Tarnishing DLH or GBP in the same brush as Haye, Hatton, Harrison and Khan - did you see the bill this weekend? I think GBP involvement in this fight has been minimal. Just there as Khan's representative.
They havent rung anyone. Hennessy for Tyson Fury maybe, or the other way around probably, The world is a big place and with a £1m loss on the cards a little bit of expense could have prevented this mess. Golden Boy are his Promoters, they have let him down in my opinion.
Totally agree, seems that they have offered no support at all.
A really bad move by Khan, in my opinion, for what it's worth.
Can see what your saying Boxingchat, my disagreement was that it seemed you seemed to be using this joke as an excuse to slag off GBP - when only last week they showed they put on big value for money PPV's most of the time.
I think there are alot of if's, buts and maybe's. Personally I think GBP put alot of trust in their associative partners in overseas fights, mainly because they should have the contacts to deal to arrange undercards involving local fighters. Remember Haymaker's early fights were always in association with GBP promotion - how much impact did they have on the undercard of Barrett vs Haye for example, did they even know when the bouts tooks place! GBP were even involved in some off TV Sunday shows involving Groves and McGuire - I very much doubt they had any involvement at all on these.
Similar situation with Frank Maloney's involvement with Hatton vs Lazcano - although I've heard two sides to this one.... 1) Hatton Promotions did eff all, and 2) Maloney promotions did eff all...... but GBP were also involved and its pretty universal that they did eff all. I think thats how they opperate - get their name involved by releasing their fighter but thats it. Obviously alot more hands on in stateside shows - its practical. How much involvement did Don King have when he was in partnerships with Sports Network on these small(ish) Sports Network shows not involving a yank? (Question not an insinuation).
I firmly shoulder the blame on the UK promoters on this - not the associative promoter. Their end of the bargin was to get Khan there.... objective achieved.
Even if GBP were phoning regularly to check on the bill..... I'm sure the replies were - all okay, Sky okay'd it - we've got Fury vs Rahman! Only this last week this bill has fallen apart.

What sort of quality control is that? Then, because McCloskey is a good challenger but not a big enough name, they start relying on the likes of Matthew Macklin and Tyson Fury to bolster the show. I'm sorry, but who the hell are those two at the end of the day? We know them, we appreciate them, but are they PPV material? I say no. And anyway, no one in the TV world sells a PPV on the strength of an undercard fight. It's the main event that's supposed to sell.
So then Sky do the right thing by taking it off PPV because they don't think it will sell and start blaming the promoters for not having found them a good enough undercard, when this is the company that declared the fight PPV without there even being an opponent!! Ridiculous, the card and particularly the OPPONENT should have been settled before it was even made PPV. But that's not how Sky work. They set a PPV date then try to fill it, it seems to me. And on this occasion they couldn't.
So Khan and McCloskey are offered far less than they'd originally been promised, and they've said eff that for a game of soldiers and gone to Primetime to take a punt on the fight selling. I feel sorry for them. It's their right to get the best deal possible and they were promised a good one, you can't blame them. But when it's snatched away from them through no fault of their own, what are they suppose to do? I wouldn't have done it myself, but they might as well take a punt on Primetime. But I don't think the fight will do particularly well on there. And Sky will take Khan back for Bradley, no worries - there's money to be made and they'll want to be part of it. There won't be any longterm damage to the relationship, bet your house on it. Money talks.
The whole thing's a joke but the point it started to go wrong was right at the start, when Sky decided that Khan vs TBA was good enough to charge 15 quid for. Let's hope they've learned from this and it will be the start of a more realistic era in the economic relationship between TV and boxing. The signs for that are good and I think Sky belatedly made the best move under the circumstances, even though they were at fault for all the problems.
Excellent Excellent Excellent post - that's why I have been preaching it is so unproffesional from sky, borderline libel also with false advertising. It WAS on their schedule to be on Sky Sports 3 when nothing was clearly agreed.
They should never have agreed to this PPV if McCloskey wasn't deemed worthy - none of this "yeah, proviiding the undercard is great"..... this is purely a financial decision based on previous PPV's sales involving Khan, negative feedback involving Harrison vs Haye and early indications of PPV revenue here.... yet Adam Smith et al are being petrayed as the moral winners... blaming the quality of the bout - as you say why accept it in the first place.
I wonder if Team Khan can sue Sky?
I'm as anti PPV's with the best of them, but this is unproffesional and only hope Sky learn from their mistakes - cause its their mistake.

Interesting article from KG at BS - Team Khan is correct with SS3 - you do have to subscribe to the full sports package. You can get SS 1 and 2 for something like £10 a month - so... I can see the added frustration of Team Khan for the "bounce" to SKy Sports 3.... it wouldn't have nearly as well in the ratings as a SS1 bounce. All those BT vision customers who get the cheapest outlet for Sky Sports would have missed out - or needed to update.
How much of it is bullshit, but it seems reasonable to accept the pay drop but allow it on the most available Sports channel. A bit sly of Sky not to have it on SS1. They used to do that with Sky Sports Xtra - Holyfield vs Ruiz 3, Trinidad vs Vargas, Trinidad vs DLH - advertised as NON PPV - but essentially it was!

We had great times with Sky, but since the Haye-Harrison fight, they want to dictate full shows and undercards, and if fighters pull out there is not much that we can do. Amir Khan is a pay-per-view fighter. Sky is showing Degale vs. Groves on pay-per-view - why not Khan.” – Saj Mohamed, member of Team Khan.
I think its time we boycotted all PPV not just Khan. These are hard times and Sky Sports is expensive enough without PPV on top. The Haye-Harrison fight was a complete piss take. A one sided fight and no undercard, things had to change. I have bought the odd PPV but I wont anymore.

Football first is on sky sports 2. Sky should not annouce a ppv to they have the fight and undercard they happy with. They learned a lesson. I hope sky get Berto v Ortiz fight now. Also Sky should sign Froch now.

Only point I don't agree with is that
all PPVs' are sold on the back on a main event. Most are but I'm pretty sure quite a few Don King and FW have been sold on the back of a bumper card packed full of good fights eg. The Magnificent Seven Bill.

You've got a point re Mag 7 type shows Panther, but the main events in those are only nominal, it's the strength in depth of the card that's the selling point. Quantity (albeit decent) over quality.

So far for Degale v Groves, Cleverly V Braehmer. I know Frankie Gavin fighting I heard one of Walsh is fighing Napa in a Super bantam elimantor. Any others? The 3 fights so far look even. Hopefully there is many more.
