No it would not. It would lose them viewers and piss off the sponsors of the event. Floyd still gets paid.
Fine, let them go and sponsor other events, there are plenty of corporations that would be willing to take their places.
Also WE the followers of the sport demand to hear the people we pay to see SPEAK!
Face it, floyd is bigger than Merchant - HBO would side wit floyd.

Floyd makes them money, Merchants coast them money and I bet a large amout of nthat is on drink.

Both Dela Hoya and Tyson have tried to have Merchant either fired or removed from their fights. HBO refused on both occasions. With Tyson, it cost them a 100 million dollar, ten fight deal. Both Tyson and DLH were far, far bigger stars than Mayweather. Far bigger.

Things may change now, because of Merchant's shorter contract, age and that Ross Greenburg has tried to replace him with Max Kellerman once already. But back then, there was such an outcry from the industry and HBO insiders and fans that Greenburg had to walk it back.

The state of the game today MERCHANT gets hs drunk ass dumped.

Show me the link showing the reason Tyson left was because of theor refusal to dump Merchant.

No way on earth does any business keep a drunken blithering idiot hated and despised by fans and fighters alike over a fihter making them several hundred million dollars.

Unless Merchant has a video of the head of HBO raping a baboon.

Don't waste your time he's an idiot.

I actually read about the whole Tyson/HBO thing in Boxing Monthly & The Ring.

I wonder why he (Lion whatevr) was so mad about Merchant?

I tend to agree but Floyd's awful attitude has been honed within a broken family unit of wife beaters, drunks and crack addicts

I mean what family goes for a picnic and sets up a ring for their boys to beat the shite out of each other.

Though out of that he's has developed a formidable will to win with the skills to match which is pretty inspiring if you can blank out the man himself...which tbh is impossible because he's a pretty unlikeable

Merchant is class, he's been involved in the sport all his life. For those who don't know (and sorry if everyone does), you can spot him in the crowd between Ali's legs, in the famous image/poster of Ali standing over a just-decked Liston. That was over 45 years ago and he's still going strong, personally I enjoy his commentary and I like his interview style, which seems to be him trying to approach the questioning from a detached, sideways perspective. Its distinctive, and he seems to take a few seconds to compose his questions, fair enough, he is quite old now and the grey matter might just take a bit longer for the cogs to turn. I appreciate that he doesn't just kiss ass or ask generic questions.

As bad as Ortiz putting his nut in was, you can sort of empathise as it was a split second reaction born out of frustration.

Mayweather's response was calculated. That's the difference for me. Ortiz did something very stupid in the heat of the moment and Mayweather did something much worse, and did so with a cool head. Scratch cool, cold blooded's more apt. He showed an ugly side to his character tonight, or this morning I should say.

You can repeat the mantra about a fighter defending themselves at all times but whichever way you cut it, it was a sucker punch, 2 sucker punches. That's a cardninal sin imo.

Oh for christ's sake. Ortiz' move was TOTALLY calculated, he even took a step back to get more momentum before putting the nut on Mayweather.

Mayweather was within the rules. How can people complain that his actions weren't 'in the spirit of the sport' when he's just been subjected to a flagrant foul. Ortiz got what he paid for, play dirty, that's what happens. Should have protected himself. All that hugging and kissing was horseshit.
Granted, it was intentional, but calculated? TOTALLY calculated?

You're clearly letting bias creep into your assessment of this.

James, you're usually bang on with your boxing knowledge, but this revisionism of Ali's legend is just plain silly.

Merchant is and was still a legend.

Even he (unlike some of you kunts (Jon Saxon, Charlieb etc) can appreciate Floyd's supreme gifts. Even in the post fight comments (which you primetime viewers don't see) he still had mostly good things to say about Floyd. He wasn't saying floyd cheated or anything like that.

Floyd won fair and square. Just because Ortiz thought it was a speed dating for men contest, it doesn't mean Floyd was wrong.

Who said I can't appreciate Mayweather's gifts? Bit presumptuous of you!

I won't separate the man from his ability, I will not cut the former slack due to the latter.

He disgraced himself last night, there's no getting around that.

Edit: Maybe I should've just called you a Gayweather nut-hugging kunt?

There's no revisionism of Ali's "legend' there. The only revisionism is from those who seek to beatify the man and expunge all the nastier aspects of his life. He was a racist, and a member of an overtly racist cult, he was a womaniser who cheated on numerous wives and he certainly was misogynistic and bigoted. That's not revisionism, it's part of the truth.

Floyd is almost certainly the best boxer I've seen in 20 years of watching boxing, ten of watching it seriously. He's exceptional.

He's also a loathsome character.

Ali was no racist. his comments about race during the 60's and 70's need to be taken in context. he was a member of the NOI but even then their very existence needs to be read in context.

he was not particularly respectful to the women in his life..i'll give you that.

He did believe in complete separation of the races and even spoke at a Ku Klux Klan meeting, where he received a good reception because of his views, which I imagine is pretty rare for a black guy! His views certainly promoted racial divides, even though they were spoonfed to him by the NOI.

Anyway.... Larry Merchant spoke to Floyd exactly the way Floyd deserved to be spoke to and it was fantastic!

he jettisoned these views towards the end of the 70's and like i say they need to be read in context....you should also look into the history of the NOI for a greater understanding of what was goin on..

ali never spoke at a klan rally...that's total bs that's been floated about for years.

Quite - I have read extensively about Ali, and I've no doubt that he was racist for at least a time in his views.

His treatment of Joe Frazier was also extremely shameful when you consider that Frazier was instrumental in Ali getting his license back - Ali humiliated the man and his reference to Frazier being a gorrilla were rather dodgy for me, considering Ali was of mixed race heritage.

Ali got away with it all because he was funny and charming, but in his younger days, he really wasn't a very nice individual.
