Best lads in our gyms were James's, Lowthers, and Wharton. Not an Irish bone between them.

I can tell your not a gypsy Frankie , because no real gypsy man would refer to his ethnic heritage gyppo , highly offensive amongst my people, its a bit like and half cast person calling all his father side as n*ggers but not wanting to be know or referred to as black , no doubt you will get all the spinless gorja chavies sticking up for you using that word on this site now

Has you said your educating most gorja's ( Gaja ) on this forum of the meaning, let me educate you on some of the most popular/biggest traveller/gypsy family names :D

Probably biggest & most popular names/families of Irish travellers are:
McDonagh
Docherty
Joyce
Ward
Kiely
Fury
Mcginley
Gavin's

Also mrpedigree I'm only having a laugh, busting ya balls a bit mate :TU:
You mention all the well know Irish Names and including the Fury name but what i guess you dont know is the Furys have just as much english romany blood running through them as Irish, i think the Irish handle is something tyson wanted to get a handle on :)

God forbid I am 40 year old next year and i have never heard of the name Gavin on any english gypsy site i have eva stopped on, but thats not to say the name ent among the paddys , but just remember they are a separate breed from us Romanies , a bit like the pakistanis and Sikhs ..but if your are even remotely related to a gypsy you would know this :D

BTW answer to your question i am a true romany uk gypsy , from one of the well known and respected families here in gloucester , i am more than proud of who i and what I am 8)
The name Gavin, in the travelling community
Gavin, comes from the Irish travellers, history.
I have a first cozen married to a Gavin, who's family comes from the west of Ireland, Cork, Limerick.

Ya there's a lot of
Travellers all over the uk and Ireland
I would have
Gallagher somewhere on the list
As Manchester And some parts of south Ireland
In county Kildare, county Laois and Dublin.
is full of us.

I said gypo as a joke to be honest but I don't class myself as a traveller as I have lived in the same house all my life ent seen my dad since was 2! So I owe a lot to my mom I must say. But I have mates who are gypsies just I ent one.

Great thread, but yeah, Mr P shouldn't be taking offence so easily, it's pretty clear on here that gypsy's are an integral part of boxing heritage and nobody here has said anything bad against that. There are Irish who would take offence to being referred to as "Paddy's", it all needs to be taken in context. I know very little about gypsy's and have never interacted with them other than chatting at the bar at the odd boxing show, but this thread has been an education.

But you are! Just grown up a different way. I have Irish blood but have never been there in my life.

I also mentioned the 4 biggest English gypsy (Romani) family names aswell mate :TU:
It doesn't really matter what heritage I have or Frankie or in fact what we class ourselves has, or anyone else for that matter, it's a personal view.
I'm very well aware of the differences between English (Romani) Gypsys & Irish Travellers my sister-in-law who is a Irish traveller is married to a English gypsy has are many of our cousins, also I'm aware that the Furys have Romani blood has my mother-in-law aunt is a Fury, her grandmother was a Joyce, etc, etc, just the same has the Gavin's & Power's have connecting blood. It's a very deep thing to go into mrpedigree but believe me my friend I know the difference and know my stuff :TU:

I don't agree either mr friend with your constant use of the word Gorja and going even further by calling them all spineless Gorja's in your reply to Frankie. No need for that, Frankie was clearly having a laugh when he said it thats why he put Martin (power) name in brackets jokingly, has he's related too him.
By no way was he being serious or derogatory.

But getting back to this thread, there has been some great Gypsy/traveller fighters who have done themselves and community's proud, and they continue to have strong links in the Amateur ranks and long may it continue.

And just for the record I've never sold pegs or heather door to door or shoplifted at the swan mr beano

There's lots of terms & names that different ethnic groups may find offensive, for example :

Mixed race people being classed has Half Cast :TU:

Non travellers/gypsys being classed has spineless Gorja's :TU:

You can see where I'm going with this, I think we should get back to what this original thread was about has its a good thread, not what people class themselves has.

The difference being the word Gorja is not a derogatory word as its romani language , i used the term half cast as i was unaware that its was highly offensive :-? ..i guess i have learned something :)
God knows i have dealt with prejudice all my life so would never dream of being intentionally racist or making racist comments, i have used many boxing clubs growing up and its surprising how blacks, gypsys and people from different ethnic backgrounds support and train along side one another in harmony .
I have to deal with it on a regular basis on forums, the word Pikey/gyppo being used , i bet half of them dont understand how offensive these words are , and bet the other half that do know how offensive it is wouldn't dare use them words on one of our sites or in a pub where we was to ;;-) :D

That's a fair reply mrpedigree, no of course the ignorant people who use them phrases wouldn't say it in your company, and yes I can imagine you've had to deal with your fair share of discrimination in your time, in Ireland travellers are discriminated against terribly, a million times worst than in the UK, it's the way the world is unfortunately, but that's what makes boxing great, no matter if your the champ or the contender, what ever race/religion your from we all are one and are equal in that square circle

I think a lot of that comes from the film Snatch, surprised they got away with using it so much in that. As you say I think a lot of people using it now don't realise it's considered as offensive as the n-word.

Sweeney, Stokes, Myers would be more prevelant names in Ireland, especially when it comes to boxing.

Strange i thought he used Bobby Frankham Jnr as an insight in to developing the character ?
Didnt Brad Pitt go on the Frankham site a few times ?

sounds more likely. i dont know much about these things, but was always intruigued by idea that a local character influenced a big movie project.

That's right Martin, obviously Slapbang doesn't know much, strange he's never heard of them especially seen has he's from Ireland. kiely are massive family all over Ireland especially in cork, London & Manchester
