I've drunk in Hartlepool many times and attended boxing at the Borough Hall. Been to the footy there a lot too. Had some great nights. Not for a few years now mind.

Doncaster is not that bad. I used to go out there back in the day. I`d rather a night out in Donny than a night out in South Emsall or Barnsley.

Don`t think I`ve ever been to barnsley without getting into some trouble, plus I`m a lover not a fighter.

They would come over with their classic line looking for a bit of biffo "is thy lookin at me pint?" Gotta love the Barnsley chav after a skinfull.

Scawsby and Scawthorpe are really nice areas; that lad who slit his throat, was it Cliff Moore? He was a decent MMA fighter.

It's quite varied though, surprisingly there are some fairly leafy suburbs dotted about the town as well as some pretty deprived areas. Places like South Elmsall are worse in some ways - poorer and more parochial - but it's not really fair to compare it with Doncaster. South Elmsall isn't much more than a big pit village really, more comaparable to smaller towns like, say, Mexborough or Wath. Donny's a much bigger place, more comparable to Barnsley, Wakefield, Huddersfield etc., in terms of size at least.

It's more or less the town centre and a collection of villages. Some of them (ex) pit villages and some of them more traditional villages. It always made me laugh when people were at pains to differentiate that they lived in "old" Edlington (never Eldo) or "old" Rossington (never Rosso) and they were from BessARcer or "old" Cantley. Or worse still, Bawtry.

It's a real town of contradictions - Proper old school inverted snobs that still talk with a thick as you like accent, and people who write into the newspaper asking why we need or want an airport

Yeah, that's him. I grew up with him, I remember him running amok at playgroup when he was 3 or 4 and all the mums tutting. He was good mates with a load of lads I lived on the estate with so hung around with him frequently. He was definitely a loose cannon, had a lot to prove but if you got to know him he was actually an alright lad in a slightly twisted way - You had to prove yourself to him. He was a full-on pisstaker, my brother never liked him but I had time for him if he wasn't "on one" and out to prove himself that evening. I remember sitting in a living room with him, we're all stoned and he's hitting a shotgun shell with a metal keyring, trying to set it off. I don't think he ever really thought through the consequences of what he was doing [to others].

Yeah he was half decent at MMA by all accounts. He could handle himself, always could.

I think that's possibly the first time I've seen Scawthorpe described as a really nice area, haha.

My uncle and grandad was Yorkshire Main through and through, man and boy. the scabs didnt have a chance in Edlo, windows smashed and houses burned kids getting sorted in school. Still to this day its a sore subject, families still do not talk etc etc.

Our street, Princes Cresent was amongst the best houses in Edlo, up top of the village it was mainly council houses but still a good community.
