Haven't seen this mentioned yet..... but does Lennox beating a prime Vitali Klitschsko bear consideration?
The Klitshscko of 2003 was a far bigger threat than the faded Tyson of 2002, and Vitali has arguably been the best HW of the post-Lewis era

Not saying its the most significant of them, but when people are banding around bigger names who had faded by the time they lost to a Brit (Tyson, Jones, Hopkins etc) .... take consideration Vitali was in his prime.Tuan_Jim wrote:No.Heartbreak_Kid79 wrote:Haven't seen this mentioned yet..... but does Lennox beating a prime Vitali Klitschsko bear consideration?
The Vitali of 2003 would have demolished the washed up Tyson of 2002
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Sugar Ray Robinson still had 2 Fight of the Year bouts, and 4 Middleweight Championship reigns ahead of him when he lost to Turpin. For the record.Heartbreak_Kid79 wrote:Not saying its the most significant of them, but when people are banding around bigger names who had faded by the time they lost to a Brit (Tyson, Jones, Hopkins etc) .... take consideration Vitali was in his prime.Tuan_Jim wrote:No.Heartbreak_Kid79 wrote:Haven't seen this mentioned yet..... but does Lennox beating a prime Vitali Klitschsko bear consideration?

I can't believe this pointless thread has ran for five pages. It's like a crap quiz question.

Kid Gavilan
that's got to be up there
not as good as Robinson or Duran but a great fighter.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
I think to this day that Buchanan had the Duran fight going his way until . . . that would have been the best quality fighter on the night of the fight that any Brit ever beat, imo. Buchanan was putting on a performance for the ages that evening.

He does as he fought Clyde Rouan for the British Featherweight title back in 1984.littlepug wrote:pedrosa ? if barry qualifies as a brit that is

I have read some (but not all) posts.
Commenting only on boxers and fights in my lifetime, foe me it has to be Lloyd Honeygan beating Don Curry.
At the time Curry was regards as the best P4P and Lloyd had to go to America to fight him.
A lot of the boxers I have read in this thread fought top lads who were past their prime and also had home advantage - Honeygan had non of this.

Thats Sugar Robinson.... I am talking a way pasy his prime Mike Tyson who only won one more fight after Lewis beat him (and then lost to Williams & McBride)gilgamesh wrote: Sugar Ray Robinson still had 2 Fight of the Year bouts, and 4 Middleweight Championship reigns ahead of him when he lost to Turpin. Buchanan was well down on all the cards, by 5 or 6 rounds I believe and Sugar Ray Robinson > Roberto DuranTanzio wrote:I think to this day that Buchanan had the Duran fight going his way until . . . that would have been the best quality fighter on the night of the fight that any Brit ever beat, imo. Belfast's Gerry Duddy scored a little-known win over Jeff Fenech in the unpaid ranks in 1983; Liverpool's Harry Scott also deserves a mention for beating - and well-beating - Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.

Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
ok, robinson was two years past his peerless and magical best when he beat turpin - but ray's decline was very slow. turpin was ahead or at least very close to it on more than a few cards until the ko - randy had matched up to the greatest ever and ray had found him a very difficult opponent. this has to be the best fighter a brit ever beat. terry downes - in his own words "I never beat sugar ray robinson - I beat the ghost of sugar ray robinson"
laing would have posed problems even for a fit duran but would only have beaten an unfit one.
stracey's win was over an old napoles yet the odds were still heavily against him - even more after that terrible opener. that was a great win against a former true great.
ok, pat cowdell did not beat sal sanchez - but it was a split decision that went against pat in sanchez's back yard and deserves a mention.
Lloyds win was against an unbeaten fighter about to be hailed as a one of the best to ever get in a ring. that has to be up there.
an excellent thread for lovers of informed argument

Dave Charnley finally got a W over 'Old' Joe Brown, who was a terrific boxer and banger, in his day.
However, the obvious ones are the correct ones, though Berg's wins over Canzoneri and Kid Chocolate must rate high, too.

Personally, I rate Charlie Magri's win over Santos Laciar as a huge result.
