Thread bump as interesting
Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Greg Page dropping Mike Tyson was listed among the first examples in this thread, but it actually wasn't any sort of tale or legend, it was filmed:

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
looked more like Tyson landed a kidney punch on Oliver McCall to me.
McCall must have already been injured before because it looks like he is wearing some type of wrap
around his thorax.

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
came across a gym tale in a book recently
1n 1901,Canadian HW and future contender John Alexander "Sandy" Ferguson
https://www.boxrec.com/en/proboxer/11623
had secrued a job as a sparring partner to Bob Fitzsimmons.
according to the June 1901 edition of THE POLICE GAZETTE
"Bob Fitzsimmons has lost his sparring partner "Sandy" Ferguson,of whom great things were expected.
While Boxing the other night "Sandy" started to mix it up with Bob.
The result was a smashed ear,a bloody nose and several other catastophees for "Sandy"
followed by his sad departure for his home in Boston.

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Jack Johnson actually said Fitzsimmons was the hardest puncher he fought.
Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
I read it in a really old biography of Johnson (can't remember the name). The thing that stuck in my head was that there was a quote from Johnson saying Fitzsimmon's missed punches sounded like a swarm of bees going past.
Can't 100% vouch for the source tho.

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
It was Jim Jeffries who said in his autobiography that Bob Fitzsimmons hit the hardest
(he said Fitzsimmons punches hit at least "one-third harder then Tom Sharkey's punches)
but the hardest single punch he ever recieved was by Joe Choynski (it literally buttoned his lip)

btw i think it was Hank Griffin who Jack Johnson said hit him the hardest in a fight
(probably their second fight in 1902).

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Joey Dawejko claimed to have knocked out Anthony Joshua in sparring. that really could be true i mean right after watching his loss to Frank Sanchez it became obvious Joey Dawejko is a pure puncher with little technical skill, but Joshua was knocked down and eventually out by a brawler before [Ruiz 1] so again it makes sense

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Chris Eubank travelled to Herol Graham’s Sheffield gym in April 1989 and knocked him completely cold in under 60 seconds. Graham had never ever been down, unbeaten in 40+ fights at the time and world #1 contender known as a defensive wizard.
A young Naseem Hamed was in genuine shock (Graham was his idol). Apparently Eubank was motionless after doing it in some kind of stupor.

Re: Sparring tales and gym legends
Lots of rumours about that, Graham said Eubank dropped him but he wasn't knocked out and in more recent times Eubank said he avoided Graham in the pros as he was too good and he couldn't land a punch on him.coghaugen11 wrote: ↑16 Dec 2021, 01:30 Chris Eubank travelled to Herol Graham’s Sheffield gym in April 1989 and knocked him completely cold in under 60 seconds.
