Did anybody else pick up on Macklins comment post fight that he felt he could carry on but the ref decided to stop it? He was asleep on the bottom rope from where I was watching!

Not great to see but Macklin got iced. I honestly thought Macklin would win by late stoppage.

I guess we'll never know what would've happened if the former big three UK Middleweights were ever to have met, meaning Murray, Barker and Macklin. Shame that is.

I don't think Macklin's got it any more judging from his last few performances, he looks shot

Yeah, didn't look like it bothered him, obviously a few pissed off Dubs in the crowd last night after he took Fitzgerald out. I'd like to see him fight Macklin next if Matthew fights on, based on last nights performances, I think I'd be backing Spike in that one, just a question of finding the right venue for it.

I really like the way Macklin conducts himself in triumph and adversity, always have. Very well brought up IMO, his family must be proud.

I don't know what nutter threw that stool, but if it's made of wood that could have been a serious assault - very lucky it didn't hit ...yahoo blog said it may be one of the other guys cornermen..

There's only one sport like boxing, where two guys whip the crowd up like that, displaying such confidence - refusing to believe it can all go spectacularly wrong ....as it did for the hometown guy - what a punch!!

In other sports - football, tennis et cetera they downplay their chances beforehand, just in case they end up looking foolish - but boxers really put it on the line.

Can see the Andy Lee fight happening, if Lee loses. The fight would make sense with both coming off losses.

On the Gegarty fight, he was up by 2 points when stopped.

As for the stool, that was actually the stool from Spike,s corner that was thrown, some young lad about 18-19 full of juice did it and was swiftly removed. Flew over Adam Smith, Bernard Dunne, Darren Barker and Johnny Nelsons heads missing spike by inches. Great nights entertainment all the same, great to have big time boxing back in Ireland.

It must have hit someone or something. It was going at some speed.

it didnt hit anybody, where the fighters do the interviews there is a 3 foot high barrier, it smacked into that, somehow missing everyone.

Why is that? It is totally true. Other sports people are more talking about giving it their best etc and no one ever comes out and says, "I / we are better and will win"

Looked to me like he totally underestimated this guy. Spent much of the second half covered up on the ropes, looking for a one punch counter.
Kind of tactics is that for a fighter one step away from a world title shot?

No idea what's gone on with the lad but he didn't look good.

Some classy comments exchanged between the two on Twitter over the weekend. Fitzgerald apologised for the stool incident, with Spike replying it was not his fault. Both fighters paid their respects to the other.

It's odd isn't it ? There's no other high-profile sport where they will put it on the line with predictions and promises to win like boxers do - it'll be no contest..man against boy...I'll destroy him... etc

I'm sure they do in UFC but really they're just taking the lead from boxers there.

In other sports you'll hear "I'll just do my best and hopefully it'll be a good contest/match/game etc"but when you hear a boxer say something like that, the alarm bells start ringing.
