In boxing? I never am. Boxing is one of the few sports where racial/nationality "wars" are hyped lol. The PR vs Mexican thing is a genre in itself. Holmes vs Cooney lol. Imagine a NCAA basketball game with a historically white team vs a historically black team playing each other being hyped like a fight would. There'd be a public sh!tstorm In boxing thats happens monthly.

Wladimir Klitschko is at the junction in his career where he can look like the most dominant man on the planet one evening and five months later look like he's completely diminished. Not sure that Bryant Jennings will make him look the latter, but it should be interesting.

During the whole great white hope Jack Johnson thing, the Irish, Italian, and Jewish fighters were beating the crap out of each other in small venues throughout the NYC area. Even liberal whites who voted only for pols who supported civil rights and made checks out to the NAACP were cheering on Quarry, then Cooney to be the GWHope as if it were a religion.

I was caught up in that as well. Being born in 1960 I had no memory of a white HW champion. But then world events changed things. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, it has become more West vs East. Many, certainly not all, caucasian North Americans have switched back to rooting for the Wilders and Stevensons against the Klitschkos and Kovlovs.

Is a Mexican a "bigot" if he roots for his countryman against a German or Puerto Rican, or visa versa? I don't think so. This sells tickets!

But when people use racial epithets, refuse to give a black or a white fighter any credit, or (cough cough) only quote a fighter's negative statements while ignoring all the positive ones as with a Larry Holmes thread that gets ugly.
