Completely agree. I know Kessler and lacy fights get all the hype but I thought the Hopkins win was his best.
Turned out to be a very good Hopkins he beat that night.

Bloody awful fight though. I scored it a draw, but to watch it was more like drawing teeth. To be fair to Calzaghe, Hopkins was incredibly negative throughout, which tells you how much Bernard must have respected Calzaghe - he absolutely refused to engage with him at all.PredatorHayds wrote:Completely agree. Truly awful fight. As most of Hopkins fights.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bloody awful fight though. I scored it a draw, but to watch it was more like drawing teeth. He has a way to stop opponents offensive weapons. Even against Kovalev at nearly 50 he took away his aggression.
I actually had Hopkins by one I think (I'd had a few beers tbh).
But you could argue it wasn't far off a prime BHOP based on his results after.

I didn't see the fight as close. I don't remember my score but I remember being floored by the official cards. Hopkins didn't try to win, only spoil.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Bloody awful fight though. Joe took him to school in as much as he could.

I had it 116-111 JC.
No idea why some people give Hopkins so much credit for the spoil-fest he put on. JC outlanded him by a large margin and for all the talk of BHOP's effectiveness it was him who was put in a shell for most of the fight, not to mention that he flopped to the canvas and repeatedly moaned under pressure--to me clear signs that JC was being effective. Ya, Hopkins landed some decent shots here and there, though apart from the KD JC never looked seriously bothered, but it wasn't nearly enough for him to get a win or even a draw in my opinion.
I've come to think over the years that Hopkins could take a shit in the middle of the ring and a large number of people would consider it to be masterful old school boxing and give him the round for it.
