Barry McGuigan defends charging celebrities to see Frampton fights

Barry McGuigan has defended charging celebrities for tickets for major fights involving boxer Carl Frampton.

On Friday, Belfast High Court was told that golfer Rory McIlroy, singer Gary Lightbody and broadcaster Colin Murray all paid for tickets for US fights.

Mr Frampton's barrister said he was not told that VIPs were being charged.

Mr McGuigan, who managed Mr Frampton at the time, defended the ticket policy, saying: "Sometimes celebrities pay for tickets, sometimes they don't."

'Nobody spoke to Frampton'

The court was given details from a Cyclone Promotions bank account which indicated payments for tickets had come from a number of people including:

•£1,280 from Rory McIlroy
•£2,000 from Gary Lightbody
•£750 from Colin Murray

When asked about the payments, Mr McGuigan suggested they may have been buying tickets for their friends rather than themselves.

Mr Frampton's barrister Gavin Millar QC put it to him: "Nobody spoke to Mr Frampton about these people being charged for tickets."

Mr McGuigan responded saying ticket revenue was important, adding: "Otherwise, why don't you let everyone in for free?"

'You don't give tickets away'

One of the fights was the 2017 world title bout in Las Vegas, in which Mr Frampton fought against Leo Santa Cruz.

Mr McGuigan said: "On big fights like this, you don't expect to give tickets away."

Mr Frampton is suing Mr McGuigan over alleged unpaid earnings. He, on the other hand, has been accused of a breach of contract. Both men deny any wrongdoing.

The case continues.

Pretty sure that is exactly what they do in Vegas.

Would think a manager selling tickets has oppossed to giving them away , was his job , wether or not Frampton got his share is another matter

Good on Bazza for charging the incredibly wealthy for their tickets.

Huge Frampton fam and dislike Mcgugian......but had there been any evidence to suggest that mcgugian shafted Carl?
As far as Mcgugian charging millionaire celebs for tickets.....f**king right he should not sure what Frampton solicitor is getting at there as it paints him in a good light not giving free tickets away. Has it come up of how Frampton was left with a 400k tax bill?

Yes, of all the charges against McGuigan, 'making the super rich pay for their tickets' seems the least egregious.

Fair play for making McIlroy and Lightbody pay, those two boys are loaded. But he could've given Colin Murray a discount at least. He can't be that rich.

I imagine once it went in Bazza’s pocket, and despite his obviously best intentions and equitable desire to eventually pay Frampton his cut, unfortunately a busy frantic life and its many demands interceded, and he forgot to make the payments. Just a typical example of how in all innocence sometimes maybe Frampton didn’t get his full cut, despite the very best intentions on Bazza’s part, his lapsing memory sadly meant that in all innocence this, and perhaps dozens of other payments, were unfortunately forgotten, in all innocence. It’s as though Bazza’s back pocket was this black hole or vortex and once the readies went in there, it played tricks on his memory. A few dozen times, in all innocence, and with the very best intentions.
