Kovalev was still hurt by headshots in that last round with Ward. This fight just proves that he can't take a punch. Alvarez isn't Bivol or Stevenson.

By the way, I've been saying that Bivol is the future of the division. I did favor him over Kovalev.

I don't think most can take a left hand like that from Stevenson.
After the first knockdown, Kov took a hard right hook to the chin, followed by a hard left hook to the top of the head. I've been hit by that combo, and believe me, it messes you up big time. Your brain feels like it's a washing machine.

Kovalev has chin, stamina, ego & toughness issues. I'd love to know his training regime because according to JDJ, he's lazy. I was always suspicious about his chin. I just never got the impression he'd be able to take a good shot and it's clear that's true. He was stung by Alvarez in the 2nd round I think.

Only seen the highlights so I'll reserve full judgment until later, but this is a major setback for Kovalev no doubt about it.
The Bivol and Stevenson fights in terms of big event status are toast now.
It's a shame because coming into Ward 1 and the fight itself Kovalev looked very good, perhaps the money went to his head and he lost some dedication who knows.
I think the one thing that sticks in my head was when Andre Ward said he [Kovalev]has some bad habits, not really like Ward to speak like that which made me think he knew something.
Congrats to Alvarez though this win is a good scalp for him well done.

I admit I wanted Alvarez to win and I thought he could too, I viewed it as a 50/50 fight.

Well Kovalev was boxing well, up on the cards then boom..

On PTBF, I picked Kov to win a close decision, looks like it was going to be lopsided at that rate, only because I know Main Events were building the Kovalev vs. Bivol fight later on.

All Kovalev had to do was win this one fight. I think the Bivol fight was either planned for the fall or 2019.

Kovalev said during a video posted to his Instagram account from Atlantic City Regional Medical Center.

I don't think it was upset of the year, but it was an upset. I rated Alvarez, but I rated him more along the lines of a Chilemba. I thought he lost to Chilemba when they fought.

i defo thought alvarez had a chance and i made a thread about it, hes a sharp fast puncher and is way harder of a hitter then youd think looking at his record. so many fights hes hurt guys, but he hasnt really stepped on the gas to finish them. a lot of ppl just look at his ko rate and assume he cant hit

i also thought his fight with chilemba was really close, maybe you couldve scored it for chilemba or a draw, but hes a much better puncher so that made him more dnagerous to kov, who has shown some chin weakness

He boxed well, won majority of the rounds, but like some have said, he boxes 12 rounds. When pressure is applied he folds? Or is the case that he just tired out midway. Gave it too much earlier on. Shabranskky fight only went a couple and Mikhalkin didn't really make Kovalev do much work did he.

Alvarez was good from the start. He was reading Kovalev and countering well. In the 4th Sergey tried to take over, but wasn't much successful. Alvarez should be given credit for the ability to overcome adversity and also the ability to break the success of the dangerous opponent, who smelled the blood. Kovalev probably won rounds 4-6, but not so desicively, like Alvarez won the first rounds. Alvarez was just faster, smarter, more fluid.

He can beat majority of guys out there, but as long as they carry that bit of power along with pressure, that's where he is finished.

I won't match him against young and fresh fellas. Stevenson is the best option. It's the fight of the departing leaders of the division (however, I've always considered Kovalev as a true leader, while Stevenson as a minor belt-holder). The second one, who will probable be handled by Kovalev, is Barrera. And Browne and Yarde a bit questionable, I'd say. They aren't proven on the higher level, but can turn out to be good.

I thought it was a bit of an upset.
And that is because Alvarez spent so much time out waiting around for Stevenson, I couldn't really judge where he was at. He only fought 3 times in the last 2 years and his last two fights were Bute and Pascal- hardly world contenders anymore. If Alverez was Ring rusty, or rusty at the highest level- then Kov is the kind of fighter to exploit that and put him to beddie byes. So yeah, a bit of an upset.
