I grew up listening to Harry Carpenter and Reg Gutteridge who were both legendary commentators but Ian Darke was the best ever in my opinion, Sky fuCked up massively taking him off the boxing coverage
I was a bit the same but quite enjoy him now, although that said I wouldn’t want him calling a “super fight” he would distract Me too much, on another note meeting Harry Carpenter is one of my boxing highlights, lovely fella he was.

Not exactly Barrera-Morales, though, is it?!
Was it Wilder-Fury that had McKenzie and Khan talking to Bunce? Duke was the sharpest I've heard him in years on that as a pundit, and I think he's as good or bad as his partner when ringside. Rawling was always cramping him with too many ‘You just get the sense that’ handovers.
Everyone's done that since Darke, but with a much lower success rate. Darke knew to let his co-comms focus on predictions, while he called the action without undue fanfare as it unfolded. Main commentators trying to impress with their insight rarely do.
As for Ron, I don't mind him, but I think his niche is probably amateur boxing (with Woodhall) and female boxing. Female boxing needs someone willing to do their homework, since most of us are casuals at best.
I'd really like to hear Bernstein with McKenzie, and I'm hoping for Ogogo to be offered a job soon.

I think big Ron seems to be a nice bloke but I’m always disappointed when I see he’s on commentary duty and/or doing the interviews.
Less is more with commentators and when he’s doing fighter interviews I’d rather here from the fighter - not 30 seconds of a question being delivered.

Less is more with commentators and when he’s doing fighter interviews I’d rather here from the fighter - not 30 seconds of a question being delivered.
Exactly, less is more, but these guy who want to be the star rather than the boxer.

A good interviewer is like a good referee, you shouldn't really notice them.
The IFL guys get this about right.

Agreed although my one gripe with the IFL guys is that they’re in a tough position politically.
There are lots of questions I’d like them to ask boxers and promotors but they won’t and don’t because of possible recriminations. I find they don’t push FW anywhere near as much as they do with Eddie because I’m sure they’re nervous about being banned from shows.

i think FW tells them beforehand what he will talk on and what he won't. With Eddie they seem to be more friendly and the interview flows better. Can't watch neither of em personally I find em both snakey

Eddie pulled Koogs up in his latest interview about him being sh1t scared of Warren and how he never asks him any pressing questions, Hearn didn't hold back with him and rightly so

Asking Warren pressing questions would definitely just get his back up & make him defensive (and he’s defensive enough at the best of times
). It’d end up being a crap interview and then he’d refuse to do any more.

For me the Top Rank commentary team are the best out there.
Commentator, Journalist and ex-fighter work well.
Joe Tessitore, Mark Kriegel and Timothy Bradley.
All 3 know the sport inside and out.
Bradley is the best ex-pro on the mic.
They only speak when they have something good to say.

Yeah the top rank team are very decent & Bradley tells it straight - Thank God they got rid of Teddy, because he just couldn’t help him self disagreeing and arguing with everything everyone else says, such a blowhard.
And let’s agree the best anyone can come up with about Ron is “he’s a nice guy”- if he was doing commentary on a mainstream sport like football, he would get laughed out of town, no chance at all.

I heard it was Adam Smith consolidating his power, he had a real clear out.

I remember Adam Smitg interviewed Tyson Fury in the ring, after he beat Wlad. He seemed a little less annoying. Plus we couldn’t see his face.

Speaking of good commentators (so not Ron), does anyone remember Simon Reed--brother of Oliver Reed!--who used to sometimes call fights on Sky?
Very similar to Darke. Restrained, intelligent, good sense of drama; watch Herbie Hide vs Tony Tucker for an example of his pitch perfect commentary.
