Marquee, Falls Park, Belfast - For the WBA, WBO Inter-Continental featherweight titles, Michael Conlan (12-0, 7 KOs) stopped Diego Alberto Ruiz (21-3, 10 KOs) in the ninth round.

Ruiz was a late replacement for Vladimir Nikitin, who withdrew with injury.

There were few fireworks if any, with Conlan outboxing and outworking Ruiz for most of the contest. In the ninth round, a shot to the body sent Ruiz down to the mat. Conlan then followed up with a few punches to force the stoppage.

Fair play to Conlan for getting the stoppage but not bowled over again TBH, there's some things to like about him, he's quick, sharp and moves well, decent defensively and good ring generalship but offensively I don't think he's anything special, I don't think he's an accurate puncher, a lot of his shots were blocked and parried by Ruiz who was pretty poor lets be honest, also a lot of Conlan's work strayed low and he probalbly should've lost a point., I don't think he's that effective as a southpaw, his jabs a lot better when he fights orthodox

He still won nearly every round, I gave Ruiz a share of the 5th, the stoppage looked a bit strange, looks like Ruiz was put down from the right to the body, it was hard to tell it was that quick, also thought Ruiz's corner were a bit quick to step in a stop it, end of the day Conlan gets the stoppage but he doesn't carry power despite the stoppage, look at the way McComb dealt with Garrido, that's the way guys should deal with guys their apparently so many levels above, I think Conlan's gonna end up like Barnes getting manovered into a title shot before getting exposed

Conlan definitely one these fighters that needs the right promoter to win a version of the title.
He’ll get it because of his backing.

He gets exposed, as you say, when he fights the real top tier.

My feelings exactly - he is getting the job done at present and looks a tidy enough fighter without exciting too much but I always get the feeling he will struggle when he steps up, some useful guys at the top of the featherweight division too.

The upset KO of MKT cruiser hope Dee Sullivan on the tv undercard was a shocker
