The most anticipated purse bid of the year will take place in front of a live audience.
Unable to reach terms or even allow for talks to progress beyond the preliminary stage, the ordered World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title fight between Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter will be subjected to a purse bid hearing. The sanctioning body has set aside a date of September 2, 2021. BS.com has learned that the session will air live on the official Facebook page of the WBO, who will host the event remotely as conducted from its headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
A minimum allowable bid limit is in place, although it is suspected that the matchup will create a bidding war among WBO-registered promoters.
In lieu of a traditional 80/20 purse split in favor of a reigning WBO “Super” Champion, the WBO has called for a 60/40 purse split. The method is based on a formula that calculates and averages the last three fight purses earned by each boxer, a practice used to better serve notable mandatory challengers such as Porter (31-3-1, 17KOs), a former two-time welterweight titlist.
A similar approach was taken in the ordered WBO junior lightweight title fight between reigning titlist Jamel Herring and mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson, who actually stood to land the favorable end of a 67/33 split in his favor. The matter created industry wide uproar, although becoming a moot point as the two sides reached terms almost immediately after their purse bid hearing was ordered.
There stands a strong likelihood that the camps representing Crawford and Porter will not work out a deal prior to the assigned September 2 purse bid date. Talks were ordered on July 21, never advancing beyond preliminary discussion. Both sides have expressed a strong interest in the matchup, though unable to reach on agreement on how to present the fight.
Crawford (37-0, 28KOs) is represented by Top Rank, his longtime promoter though nearing the end of the last extended deal that was signed in 2018. Porter fights under the Premier Boxing Champions (banner) and is represented by its primary promoter, TGB Promotions.
Both entities are expected to bid generously on the fight.
Crawford—a three-division titlist and pound-for-pound entrant—will attempt the fifth defense of the WBO belt he obtained via ninth-round stoppage of unbeaten Jeff Horn in June 2018. In his most recent win, the switch hitter from Omaha, Nebraska scored a fourth-round knockout of former titlist Kell Brook last November at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
Porter has enjoyed two separate title reigns, making one defense each of the IBF belt he won in December 2013 and the WBC strap he obtained in September 2018. The latter reign ended in a fight hailed by many outlets as the 2019 Fight of the Year, dropping a narrow twelve-round split decision to Errol Spence (27-0, 21KOs) in their September 2019 WBC/IBF title unification bout. Porter has fought just once since then, a twelve-round shutout of unbeaten but overmatched Sebastian Formella last August in Los Angeles.

fornicate this is crawfords most exciting event to date.... Not the fight, the purse bid.
Still havent decided if toprank will bid 6.7 million do give craw his minimum, or if Bob will just go mental and bid like 3 million and then rant about the market going wild.

• July 21st – WBO ordered Terence Crawford to perform a mandatory defence of his world title, with both camps given a 30-day deadline to reach an agreement before the fight proceeds to purse bids
• August 20th – the original purse bid deadline passes with neither side agreeing terms
• August 23rd – the WBO announce the 2nd September as the date of the purse bid
• 1st September – the purse bid originally scheduled for the 2nd September is postponed until the 14th of September
If both camps fail to agree terms by the 14th September, then 55 days would have transpired since the WBO originally ordered the bout.
If an agreement is reached, then I’d be very surprised to see the fight scheduled prior to the widely-claimed expiry date of Crawford’s contract with Top Rank.
I honestly don’t know what that means… it superficially suggests Crawford might choose to extend his contract with Top Rank, or he might be replicating Canelo, by becoming a free agent willing to work with the highest bidder.
I hope it’s the latter.
That said, I hope I’m proven wrong, but for a very long time I’ve expressed my doubts about the Crawford-Porter bout materialising.
Porter has multiple lucrative opportunities he can exploit, such as rematches against Spence Jr. and Ugas, which means he can easily walk away from the WBO title shot if he’s not getting paid his commercial worth.
In terms of their legacy at 147lbs, Crawford needs this fight far more than Porter does.
Terence Crawford will be 34 years of age in a few weeks' time, but he hasn't achieved anything notable since his late twenties.
Re: Terence Crawford vs. Shawn Porter - WBO Ordered
I know but the fact they are peeling I purse bids means both don’t want it….
It’s a classic game of pull out chicken. Neither want it but the first to pull out dosent get a belt…
Nope.
All it means is both sides can’t reach an agreement.
Top Rank have tried low balling Porter before. So it’s feasible they’re doing it again (they previously offered Shawn a sum that was smaller than the purse he received for the Formella bout).
Crawford has a massive minimum purse guarantee, which means that Top Rank can’t offer Porter a big purse, without the event costing them money (assuming it won’t be a huge commercial success).
Top Rank has an exclusive deal with ESPN, which means Crawford can’t compete on a rival network without involving ESPN somehow.
Bob Arum has previously claimed he regularly loses money staging Terence Crawford’s bouts. And that he’s no longer willing to do it again.
Everything I’ve written is easily verifiable.

I know you know boxing, so i know You know that the entire point of a purse bid is for situations where the two parties can not reach an agreement...
As for the rest of the verifiable facts, i too declare them veritably factual.

For Crawford to receive his customary $4m payday (as per his contract with Top Rank), the winning purse bid would need to exceed $6.6m (to satisfy the mandated 60-40 purse split).
That seems to be a fairly unrealistic target, but I could be wrong, since Eddie Hearn wants DAZN to cover the bout.

what about the opposite, bid super high to get promotional/home advantage, with a deal for your fighter to actually accept a lower purse that you pay them but get the benefits of being the house fighter

Example?
If you’re referring to the PBC guys, then the reason they earn much more than their official purses is because they’re self-promoted.
