A damn good fight. Two young, fresh, hungry top fighters stood and banged it out of each other, that's what boxing needs today instead of different mismatches. The KO punch was sorta phantom, you can see it only on replays, a hard shot to the chest, somewhere between the solar plexus and the liver area.

Some are critical of Figueroa’s and Nery’s boxing skills. Fair enough, but what did any of the detractors expect from these two? They have both been bangers who win by way of attrition.

I saw an excellent fight, and card last night. Figueroa is not the first boxer to find success in the profession through constant volume punching aggression, and he won’t be the last. He will likely meet his match sooner rather than later, but I am not going to fault him for his crude success based on being in peak physical condition and massive heart.

Beats hell out of clown and geriatric exhibitionists, and crap like Charr v Lovejoy.

That was a really great night of fights. Hats off to Danny Roman. A skilled technician and probably the best boxer at 122. He’d beat the winner of the Fulton vs Fig. Hopefully he gets his shot at MJ and can be a truly undisputed champion.

As for Figueroa, he fights to his strengths. His height and reach aren't his strengths, his power, work rate and physicality are, and he used them excellently.

Fulton and MJ are a level above, but had Figueroa tried to box with Nery he'd have lost. He had to break Nery and he did just that. He and his team got the game plan spot on.

Neither guy had any plan.
And if you watch Nery after the count nodding to someone outside the ring (not in his corner) as in: "there you go, cheque please!"

mj beat him once in a real close fight, would be a good rematch

i think danny beats figg, fulton is a tougher matchup

it was a great fight that was highly enjoyable and figgy was crude as f@ck, they can both be true, i don't think anyone is rating fights like holyfield-mcbride or charr-lovejoy over this

If you didn’t like what you saw last night then tune into to match room and watch 2 guys with no power cover up all fight while throwing 25 punches a round and running around the ring. If you want to see 2 guys who love to hit and will throw til they’re out, then watch PBC. The choice is yours, champ.

Fair enough. I disagree.

Nery and Figueroa were undefeated going into this one. They have both defeated relevant comp. They were both in excellent shape, and they both went for it, from what I saw. I suppose that it is possible that Nery took a dive, but he was taking massive shots in 7, and he had a classic delayed reaction to a great body shot. I admit that I was mildly surprised that Nery could not get up from that shot, but it did appear to be a cumulative stoppage.

Was Martinez v Burgos a U10 level battle too?

Rewatching this card now. Better than it was last night!! Everything I could ask for in a lower weights card. Three quality, competitive wars. Espinoza vs Roman was just a quality professional fight. I would watch any combination of the four super bantams on the card last night. Nery v Espinoza and Roman v Figueroa would be excellent.

Danny Roman is just a consummate pro. Great longevity. Pure warrior. 122 is one of the best weight classes right now.

Nah, Kiwi, Figs chopped Nery down methodically. They both deserve more respect than you are giving them. U10? Ridiculous. Dive? Ludicrous. Throwing with eyes closed? Just stop.

Brandon is raw and slow but he did have a strategy and he executed it well. Fulton best bring his helmet flak jacket, and lunch bucket. This kid will not go quietly.

Brandon Figueroa-Luis Nery Main Event Averaged 221,000 Viewers On Showtime

Showtime’s viewership increased Saturday night for its broadcast of Brandon Figueroa’s knockout of Luis Nery.

Nielsen Media Research reported Tuesday that an average of 221,000 viewers watched Showtime’s main event from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The average viewership for the Figueroa-Nery fight was higher than the prior main event Showtime televised.

That bout, undefeated welterweight contender Jaron Ennis’ sixth-round knockout of Sergey Lipinets, was watched by an average audience of 187,000 on April 10 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Nielsen’s numbers include only those that watched Figueroa-Nery live on linear television. Those that viewed it via Showtime’s streaming service aren’t available because ViacomCBS, the parent company of Showtime and Boxing Scene, does not release streaming figures.

The 24-year-old Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) knocked Nery to the canvas with a left uppercut to the body in the seventh round. The previously unbeaten Nery couldn’t beat referee Thomas Taylor’s count and the former WBC bantamweight champ lost for the first time as a professional (31-1, 24 KOs).

Figueroa, who won the WBC super bantamweight championship from Nery, was ahead on one scorecard and even on another card in a fan-friendly fight through six rounds. Judge Zachary Young had Figueroa in front 58-56 at the time of the stoppage, but judge Lou Moret scored five of the first six rounds for Nery (59-55) and judge Edward Hernandez Sr. scored their fight a draw through its scheduled halfway point (57-57).

Beating Nery moved Figueroa, of Weslaco, Texas, into a 122-pound title unification fight against WBO champ Stephen Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs). Showtime will televise the bout between Figueroa and Philadelphia’s Fulton on September 11 from an undetermined venue.

Before Figueroa defeated Nery, Showtime’s co-feature, Danny Roman’s points victory over Ricardo Espinoza, drew an average viewership of 213,000.

Los Angeles’ Roman (29-3-1, 10 KOs) fended off the aggressive Mexican and out-boxed Espinoza (25-4, 21 KOs) to win a unanimous decision in their 10-round junior featherweight fight. Judges Rudy Barragan (98-92), Hernandez (98-92) and Young (97-93) all scored Roman, a former IBF/WBA 122-pound champ, the winner by comfortable margins.

The opener of Showtime’s three-bout broadcast, Xavier Martinez’s unanimous-decision defeat of Juan Carlos Burgos, was watched by an average of 168,000 viewers. Sacramento’s Martinez (17-0, 11 KOs) beat Burgos (34-5-2, 21 KOs) by the same score, 99-91, on all three cards, but the Mexican veteran made their 10-round junior lightweight fight competitive.

Iron, you could make a case it’s the best weight class even. Rivaled only by 115? The best part of the little guys having packed divisions is that they actually fight each other. It’s hard to even make that happen at lightweight these days.

Agree 100% on Roman. Love watching him fight. He has truly elite level skills offensively.

I'd go as far as to say 122 is rh best division right now, so many great fights, interesting potential match ups, fighters willing to face each other, egos aren't standing in the way of things.
