Would take a knob like Cog to come on and start trying to diminish Hagler.

Loser.

i am curious about the vaccine though, no one can say that any long term testing has been done on it, they are all rushing it out there. ppl have short memories if they dont think vaccines/meds without serious long term tests have caused major health problems. theyve already waivered on whether certain demographics should take the vaccines.

this isnt something like decades and decades of research which suggest the idea that vaccines cause autism is bs, this is all super new and with tons left to know
I just had my first jab (Astrozeneca). Fairly unpleasant couple of days though nowhere near as bad as Covid itself was

Nobody should be trying to diminish Monzon either.

In fact why even bring up sporting accomplishments - he was a father, son, sibling and gent which means more. It pales into insignificance to discuss mythical ‘all time’ lists - family lost a loved one. The man risked his life 1000x to get out of the ghetto and in turn entertain us. So RIP - Rest in POWER

Hopkins would have feigned injury and tried to get the marvellous one disqualified.
Dreadful to watch. Almost fell into a coma watching Hopkins v Eastman

Felt sick when i heard this news. Way to young (whatever you say maggie). A giant of the greatest sport of all.

The guy was forged in a furnace. The perfect specimen. Did it the hard way. 40 odd fights before he gets a title shot
is staggering. At the peak of his powers a well known repected journo (can't remember who it was) wrote "there's two MW
divisions....Hagler's and the rest of them". One of the few who finished on their own terms, with everything intact including his
investments....... From the Duran school of no razzamatazz needed also. Virtually, just put the other guy in the opposite
corner and ring that damn bell.

Hard to fathom he was an underdog v Minter, but a superstar was unleashed that night. It was a privilege to witness
his greatness unfold over the following years. Special times.

I believe he underwent a tour of the UK a couple of years ago, and went down an absolute storm. An old mucker went
to see him in the early 90's at a Doncaster bib'n'tucker event, which i regret swerving in hindsight.

The ultimate respect is no one batted an eyelid when he officially became Marvelous Marvin. It was just right.

Cog isn't trying to diminish Marvin, Tommy. I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing his legacy and where he sits against the other greats.

I appreciate that this might sound like a rather mixed up post on two points I want to make on Hagler.

Whilst in terms of pure mesmerising artistry I would say Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Leonard are the two greatest fighters I can remember their prime....if you asked me to "design" the perfect boxer...it would be Hagler...his build, his physique, his box fight style, defence....the guy had no weakness really....whereas Maywewthers had a weakness in power and Leonard struggled to adapt when his speed eroded....Hagler, you just cannot find a weakness. So in many ways whilst I'd rank Hagler as the third best fighter of the last 40 years...in many ways he was the most complete.

Now though I'm going to be a tad more controversial....He cleaned up the Middleweight division (barring perhaps a couple at the tail end....McCallum is the stand out, Nunn, Graham etc). However, one issue I do have when it comes to p4p all time...and why I struggle to put him in the top 5 (that's how highly I think of him) was I think there is alot of rose tinted glasses about the Middleweight devision of the 1980s. He beat some very very good contenders prior to Minter....but post Minter it wasnt really that great (sorry) Duran was no Middleweight, besides Leonard and Hearns...the opposition he fought were the best out there but not great as in all time greats in their own right.

The criticisms labelled at Hopkins in terms of his middleweight run I think can also be stated with Hagler...BOTH beat everyone really , but there was lack of standout middleweight contenders

There's no comparison. Hearns and Duran would have intimidated Hopkins and ran him out the ring like Jermain Taylor (!) did. Hagler's non super star challengers were very strong and dangerous -- Hopkins for most of his 'reign' was one of three alphabet champs and his challengers journeymen.

Familiarise yourself with Hagler's pre-title opponents-- they were better than Hopkin's and most champs' title opposition.

Briscoe, Watts and Hart would’ve smashed up guys like Glen Johnson, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Keith Holmes, Jeff Lacy and Jean Pascal - badly.

Hagler was actually a counter-puncher around ‘77-‘78, sharper hitting and with an airtight defence.

Hagler was far, far superior to Hopkins. He really shouldn't be getting a mention any where near Hagler's name. It's somewhat insulting :-?

Hagler didn't miss dealing with McCallum. Mike was at light middleweight at the time of Hagler's reign. When McCallum did box for one of Marvin's former titles he got soundly whipped by Kalambay in their first fight, himself a class below Hagler.

Kalambay is about the best I’ve seen in terms of slipping and countering on the move. In any weight ever. Forget Mayweather.

And McCallum perhaps the greatest fighter of the modern era - he was the road warrior, beating all the most avoided (often much younger) contenders in their own backyards, all the Kronk fighters who’d get in with him, avenged defeat, and while fat and old won the first four rounds straight against the most unbeatable fighter ever in Roy Jones! So, so good. Underdog against Curry and Watson and showed perfection and excellence of execution.

McCallum-Toney I is the greatest 101 of boxing in history. It was to coronate the next great middleweight with the one and only Marvin himself to present the winner. Draw but felt MM nicked it - Toney was strong weight-wise and peaking.

Yes, McCallum was a career light middle at the time....but then Hearns had mainly campaigned at Welter, Duran and lightweight, Leonard at Welter....there was no criticism of these fights and rightfully so.

John Mugabi....mainly a light middle also and , as good as he was, inferior to McCallum

To other poster I acknowledged Haglers pre championship career...I stressed post Minter.

We can question Hopkins opponents but he beat everyone he could really...as Hagler...but both didnt have outstanding opposition....Roaldan, Sibson....good yes....but far from great. How much worse was Eastman (as frustrating as he was) compared to Sibson

Sibbo was a strong lad wasn’t he. But he wasn’t much better than Henry Wharton in reality. Hagler in 83 was not the unknown Hagler of 77 though (that Hagler was techically unbelievable).
