Ironic that just as Gray was throwing the towel out the ring Ritson was going down again.

Im not Steve Gray's biggest fan but im not overly fussed about him throwing the towel out, Mickey Vann done it years ago when Earl's corner threw the towel in against Katsidis, seconds later Earl had Katsidis on his arse, its not something I'd encourage tbf its a dangerous decision but Ritson was getting pulverised to the body and he kept getting up and throwing so not that controversial for me
As for the fight i gave Ponce everything, he hurt Ritson moments into the fight with a left downstairs and took over from there, he actually neglected the body i thought but still he was dominant and bullied Ritson all night, uppercut with both hands and clubbing shots around the side, Ritson has a decent beard tbf but just cant hide when hurt to the body, he usually has a great jab as well but it was non existent
Anything Ritson done bounced off Ponce and Ponce came back with more, walked him down, beat him up, as i say i thought he stopped throwing body shots and headhunted a bit but in the 10th he landed another sweet shot downstairs, right hand put Ritson down and it was another right for the second KD, the last knockdown for the stoppage looked a push but Ritson was spent

Appalling refereeing. Never saw that before.

Katsidis was a warroir, too brave for his own good.

Never seen a ref ignore a towel in such a blatant beatdown at the end .
Don't think you could give Ritson more than a round .

i dont mind so much throwing it out on the first kd, although i think it's clear the end was nigh, but what's the point of it continuing when he goes down again straight after? he was obviously done, just putting him needlessly at risk by letting it carry on
at least in earl's case, he'd only taken like 4 rounds of punishment as opposed to 9, and the ref didn't let him get dropped twice more once the towel was thrown out

That was appalling refereeing.
I would disagree with that. Ritson was being outworked and outclassed but was he hurt? And let's also make the distinction between being hurt to the body and being concussed.
I'd say the ref, as the closest man to the action, was in a good position to say Ritson could safely continue. Dont see too much controversy myself.

bizarre steve gray
surely, after he got dropped the 2nd time, it's obvious the corner was right and that it should be called even givin him benefit of the doubt
Only the referee can stop the fight?
of course, and he can listen to the corner's wishes

I'd say Ritsons corner were close to the action too and didn't want to see their man get badly hurt .

Ponce fought at a relentless pace throughout, fair play to him. Ritson again did himself no favours sitting right in the pocket and getting tagged repeatedly even after scoring effectively himself, never moves off and gives a different look/angle, Ponce wasn't going to be denied against such a style.

I didn’t see the fight and only just got home from a wedding pretty pissed up so my opinion counts for zero, but surprising to hear people say the referee did the right thing in refusing the towel - reading through this thread and Twitter, Ritson was battered throughout, surely his corner have the right to decide when they’ve seen enough. People were saying on here from early rounds that the punishment could be taking years off Ritson’s career.

ya i agree, don't know what they're seeing
i mean, after he threw out the towel and ritson goes down the 2nd time, was that STILL not enough?? this as after getting beaten up for most of 9 rounds
talk of safely continuing......if a guy cant defend himself or withstand more punishment, how safe is that?

I see your point, and yes, you could probably say the stoppage was coming, but this is top level boxing. Where do we draw the line?? This is a rare occasion I'll back the ref letting it go a little longer
Ritson might nurse a broken rib or 2, and he'll be back in the gym in 6 weeks with no lasting damage

he was clearly done and gained nothing from taking more punishment and being dropped an extra 2 times. you are not safely continuing if you cant defend yourself and are badly hurt and cant stay up
this was after taking lots of shots for 9 previous rounds and progressively getting more worn down , theres just nothing good that comes from it

People say Big Tel was biased in helping Clev back to the corner against Kov. Rubbish. After tonight's performance, I think the only way everyone will agree that our refs are biased is if they actually start punching the away fighter in the face! If the towel had come in from the other corner, I'm sure Steve Gray would have done exactly the same thing....
I assume Ritson was miles ahead on the cards...

Marvellous display from Ponce. Ritson was brave but had very little to offer. Would be interesting to see Ponce in with Catterall

Nelson was saying JT should avoid Ponce.
He had no quit in him.
This should be Ritson’s 3rd loss really.
I gave Ritson just the 4th round.
Good thing Ponce finished it and didn’t allow the judges to score the fight.

If the guy's corner thinks he's done, then he's done. The referee should never be allowed to officiate another Boxing match.

i missed the first 2 but gave ponce all the other rounds, i was leaning toward ritson for most of the 4th but ponce stole it for me in last 20 seconds or so. that was the only round i thought could swing

Makes you wonder what Ritsons level is. He can't seem to win beyond British level.

But at lightweight he was lifting blokes off their feet at British title level. Incredible how different his performances are between the two levels.
