fighting as much as he did too, srr was bound to have some off nights, to be sore/tired from previous fights, etc. things like that could certainly lead to a guy having more issues than he'd normally have vs much less talented opponents. turpin of course had plenty of talent himself though, and was fantastic that night............i dont think srr intentionally lost that one

Good points. I don't see the Turpin fight as an all time upset either.
Not mentioned here was Ali/Norton I. At the time a HUGE upset.

Wouldn't have been an upset. I think that fight was even money. And Norton was through his PhD with Ali already. No one knew who he was when they first met.

Norton definitely won the round. Holmes put together a thrilling sequence of right hands in the last 30 seconds but it was all Norton before then, in my opinion. The decision hinged on the round. Two of the judges went for Holmes and their final scores read 143-142 for Holmes. The other score was also 143-142, but for Norton.
Norton is surely the only world champion in boxing history never to win a world title fight.

I still think it is a terrible shame that Daho's fans stormed the ring as soon as Cowdell hit the ground. Najib's greatest win was sullied because of their behaviour. Cowdell was out but he wasn't 10 and out.

I don't think he was getting up! But yes you're right, it put the result in jeopardy too.
Weirdly (I was about 11 at the time and not sure now), but I've an idea the fight was during the daytime rather than the evening? Maybe that's an entirely erroneous memory.
It was at the FTH in Manchester, home of the famous Bob Dylan Judas gig too, trivia fans.
Anyway, yeah, the biggest shock in boxing ever, bar none. Fact.

Yes, it was a Saturday afternoon show screened 'live' on World of Sport. Tony Willis retained his British lightweight title against Steve Boyle and then came the Daho-Cowdell shocker. Nobody deserved a British title more than Daho but he was lucky that his fans didn't get him disqualified.

ya it was shocking how much detail he described it , he was very open about it. of course most sports coaches are great and will change ppl's lives for the better, but it is an area that makes fertile ground for ppl looking to exploit others
