Mikey Garcia’s time being considered a top-tier world-rated talent is essentially over.
Here’s what I wrote back in July:
Enlightened-One wrote: ↑02 Jul 2021, 03:50Mikey hasn't "grown" into the weight in a sporting manner. He's currently carrying some excess timber, hence his hamster cheeks. He's in his mid-thirties and he'll struggle to lose a lot of weight at his age.
Not campaigning below 147lbs for three years is a lot of time.
Mikey obviously couldn’t make the 140lbs limit against his super-lightweight opponent, hence the seemingly undisclosed 144lbs catchweight stipulation.
Mikey’s lack of professionalism and discipline not only cost him a massive payday against Regis Prograis, but it also resulted in him needlessly suffering an upset loss.
Now he has to rebuild, which isn’t easy to do at his age, hence the reason why I feel his career is essentially over.
As for Sandor Martin, I’m not sure what to think about him at this point in time…
I suspect Mikey “
lost the fight”, rather than Sandor “
winning it”, if you know what I mean.
Sandor is Euro level. No change there. He was the best Sandor he could be, and deservedly won.
Let's also address the issues of Garcia not being able to deal with a southpaw doing the same thing over and over. Martin is well drilled on the basics, he isn't anything flashy. Garcia should have been onto that from round one.

Too me Garcia seemed like a guy in his 30's that's had a good career but wants to do different things with his life. He didn't have that fire he usually has, there was no battle in him. He didn't look physically like he put in the work he usually does
IMO, he may be fighting for paychecks now or he completely underestimated Sandor and didn't prepare the way he should have.

That's a good question.
He was supposed to be shedding some ring rust against Martin.
But to look at him physically, he didn't put the hard yards in the gym.
I think at the core, it's a motivation thing. You never take any opponent lightly.

Mikey Garcia On Loss To Sandor Martin: 'No Big Deal, It's Not End Of World'
"It's not the end of the world. It's not the end of my career," Garcia told ESNews. "People might think a loss is such a big deal, and going into depression. No, I'm not. I'm jumping right back in it. I'm not worried about it ... [A loss] is nothing. It's part of boxing. It happens. People take losses in other areas in life. You can't let a loss keep you down. Get the f--- up. Move on. Leave it behind you. Go forward. You can't be dwelling on the past. You get all depressed and sh!t. You have to keep moving forward to what's next. That's how I see it. It's part of the sport. No big deal. It's not the first time I lost. I lost 12 times as an amateur. Who gives a f---? Does anybody talk about that? Who cares? Move on."
Coming back I was hungrier than before [the contract issues]. It's weird how things happen,” said Garcia. "[The Martin loss] is actually more motivating now. I feel a little bit more fire than before.
"My perspective is different. Boxing has changed a little bit where people think you're done after one loss. All the great fighters eventually take losses.
“As long as I'm healthy and I'm not absorbing any punishment and having physical trouble or able to live life and enjoy, that's different. Of course, nobody likes to lose. But you have to accept it. It's part of life.”

I like this part, but it would be nice if he would fight more often..
He lost his '0' to Spence, 2 weights above where he should be, so that did not hurt him at all.
This fight has hurt his stock, but it seem's he's in it for money.
He's already a 4-weight world champion, fought legit contenders and champions too.

I agree with Mikey’s comment re losses however actions speak louder than words and he is not demonstrating commitment to boxing. Can he get that desire back? I don’t know…but I know you can’t just slip a switch and change the way you feel regardless of how much self-talk etc.

Nah, not really. Anyone remember when Povetkin lost to Klitschko? He came back as the best he's ever been. Lost a ton of weight and was stopping dudes left and right.
Not sure how Mikey will come back, but he can come back better if he still has the fire. This is a former p4p fighter we're talking about. He's look very lackluster since moving to 147 lbs. (looking really flabby), but maybe this loss is good for him.
I remember when people were saying Cotto was done after losing to Trout and getting flabby. Dude experienced a resurgence right after.

If Mikey’s fire matched his skills he would be ruling 135. He hasn’t had the “fire” for years. Sure, it could be rekindled but talk is cheap.

ya its not a one time thing for mikey , being at welter at all for the last 3 fights shows it, he just doesnt want to work hard enough to be fighting where he should be

It was more of a Mikey lost the fight than Martin won.
