Yeah - that’s my take too.

This should be canceled.

The only way this can be made fair is with hydration stipulations that will be dangerous to Lara.

So either it’s dangerous for Lara or unfair on wood.

They can try and balance that danger and unfairness but really you just gotta cancel.

Why are hydration stipulations dangerous to Lara ?

If you prevent him from rehydrating and he has to go in and fight with a shrunken dehydrated brain, and that gets pinged a few times... thats dangerouse.

Ah ok fair enough :TU:

I presume they'd obviously have to let him rehydrate by a certain amount that was deemed to be safe though ?

My point is, that in order to make it fair for wood, you need to disadvantage lara, only way to do that is to dehydate him to a point with negative impacts... then you have to make it dangerouse to lara... which is why i think it should be cancled.

Mabey there is a perfect balance point but i just cant belive they will find that balance with confedence.

So still on then…

God I’d love to see Woods win this, I really like watching Bronco but Leigh is such a brave kid taking this one on again, considering the lights went out so violently last time, and now this added weight on the punches coming from the Mexican pit bull.

He’s gonna have to bring the perfect, disciplined box to orders fight to turn things around this time, and I can see him pulling off an unlikely win, but he’s on a tightrope and 12 rounds can be a long time with a TNT puncher like Lara. But woods can also hit, he just can’t get carried away if he does land big.

I’m getting Corrales/Castillo feelings about this. As much as I want to see the rematch, I can’t help but think that Lara has too much of a weight advantage.

Yeah - that’s my take too.
I disagree with that on two points.

- If you mean no check weighs, some fighters would just take ridiculous steps to drain themselves down to the weight - saunas etc at the last minute. That puts them at massive risk of brain injury from dehydration. The check weighs are aimed at ensuring weight loss is gradual, not a last-minute crash.

- And BBBofC docs couldn't cancel a fight just because someone "looks unhealthy" - if the fighter passes the pre-fight medical, that's that. There are always fighters who look drawn when they step on the scales, but if they pass the medical, the fight goes ahead.

Real issue here is that Lara is well aware of the BBBofC procedures as he would have gone through them the first time when he fought Wood. So it's not like any of this should have come as a surprise to him. But I agree there's no satisfactory answer here - if the fight goes ahead, the fighter who has made the weight properly is disadvantaged in the contest, but if the fight doesn't go ahead, the fighter who has made the weight properly is disadvantaged financially and career-wise through the loss of opportunity.

One thought on a possible solution to this kind of situation, to resolve the fact that the fighter who makes weight ends up disadvantaged whatever happens.

What about the concept of a "weight substitute", as follows.

Whenever there is world title fight at anything other than heavyweight, then in the contract for the main fight, a third fighter must be found, from (say) the world top 30 or top 50, who will be the weight substitute. That means that:

(a) if either fighter in the world title fight does not make the weight, the weight substitute steps in and gets the shot on the same financial terms as the challenger (so that the promoter is not disadvantaged whether it is champ or challenger who doesn't make the weight). And the fighter who doesn't make the weight is left out and is unpaid, as it should be.

(b) But if both fighters in the world title fight do make the weight, the weight substitute still gets an undercard fight over, say, six or eight rounds, against a relatively non-threatening fighter (again, all details such as opponent and purse to be in the contract beforehand), so still gets a run-out on the show.

It could encourage fighters who otherwise might be further down the queue for a title shot to stay in shape and sign up for this kind of thing. The only additional cost to promoters would be the price of the undercard fight, so could be manageable. It punishes fighters who know they can't make weight as it means they won't fight or get paid. And it takes the risk off the fighter who does make weight.

There must be some flaws in there somewhere - fire away...

I like the idea. I guess the only one thing is you'd have to make sure the weight substitute had a similar style. You wouldn't wanna go from a come forward banger to a backfoot southpaw counter puncher

It’s true that Wood is a brave lad for getting straight back in there with Lara, but also believe he is seriously confident he can win.

If he can resist the temptation to let go with combos up close, this could be Wood’s night second time around.
