I thought the comment the mum made was quite telling that Ricky made Graham a millionaire and he still wanted more money said it a lot to me, sounded like they thought he didn’t deserve more. Isn’t this common with trainers though, fighters agree to pay them a percentage and when the big money comes they start to begrudge parting with more dough.
Apparently FW said that he made Hatton a millionaire, and the Hatton still wanted more money :bag:
I remember Brendan Ingle telling me he never had any kind of signed contract with his boxers and they'd pay him the standard 25% as set by the BBBC. But when Naseem Hamed started earning big purses Brendan had to settle for £75,000 per fight as "Chief Second" instead of the quarter of the purse he'd be entitled to as manager.
It's common that the big earners pay a set/fixed amount to their trainers/managers,

As someone said, about Golovkin. He wanted Abel to take a fixed amount instead of a percentage.

There's no way Canelo pays his trainer $m's each fight.

Hatton does come across sound, but I will say their is the glaring gap of how micro managed and risk averse his career was ore tsyzu what was he 38-0 having not fought much, Jon taxton and who? Then he beats tszyu and they cash in, I felt he was already on decline by Mayweather fight, he was definitely better at 140 and he needed to he the bigger man, big time

If you'd signed a BBBC contract you'd be paying 25% to your manager. You coud renegotiate another amount at the end of your contract or go your seperate ways.

It was a bit tricky for Hatton I thought. I thought he was definitely on the decline - actually in the Tszyu fight, his movement was poor and certainly never the same after.

However, there was a dilemma with Ricky is do you fight the likes of Mitchell, Gatti and the other champions (remembering Tszyu had lost a lot of the belts through inactivity) and then risk a WBA/WBC run being a bit like his WBU as Tszyu might not have wanted anything of that - or do you wait until Tszyu is just over the hill enough for Ricky to win the fight and be known as the number #1 in the division.

I don't really mind his WBU run (or his pre Tszyu run) - I would say Magee, Tackie and Phillips were probably geniune top 10 fighters at the time of them fighting Hatton (even if Phillips was getting on) and the likes of Lauri and Oliveria also top 10 fighters either in the future (EBU champions usually mean top 10 fighters) or in the not so distant past. Also Pep and Pendleton were also one time (albeit a while ago) top 10 fighters.

I think Hatton's resume (as much as the manner of his wins) meant he was a geniune top 4/5 Light Welter at the time of the Tszyu fight. However, personally I would have liked to have seen him fight Gatti a year or two before he fought Tszyu and defend a genuine world belt (no forgone conclusion he beats Gatti) a few times before his own decline sets. I just thought Hatton was slipping by the time he fought Tszyu.

A lot of boxers havnt got a clue of what they are worth, what they earn etc etc and to a point what they spend.

For example I was on a percentage of what David Haye earnt doing apearances …

The sort of thing that would take into consideration was as follows:

Fee earned for Dinner speaking
Fee earned for night club appearance
Amount earnt for signed gloves
Amount earnt for Hayemaker clothing.

Deductions were:

Alcohol consumed at night club used to be horrendous thats despite getting free bottles.
Petrol
Air fares
Food

David did not have a clue, sometimes the drinks bill used to hit )3k

Than *ck I was an ex military accountant and kept a detailed sumary olf income and expenditure

he would've walked through gatti imo. glorified club fighter cos he was in wars. prime hatton steam rollers him.

i think hattons downfall was the success of the KT fight. he tried to use that "smother their punches" tactic with everyone afterwards and got lazy with his boxing.

Maybe, shame it's an if, but or maybe. Shame it never happened. Gatti is better than people credit him for. His handspeed very underated and in reality he did really dominate Ward for 2/3 of their trilogy.

Dont forget Hatton did get out boxed for parts vs Magee. I loved Eamon but if a 2 weight world champion is a club fighter then what is he.

Would have been a great W for Ricky had he beaten a pre Mayweather Gatti.

Watched the documentary this evening.
Thought it was good but could have definitely been a multi-part series.
There was a lot of his career not covered - the run up to Tsyzu, the early Vegas fights, his final fight, his go with the promotional business etc.
Would have been interesting to hear from Matthew Hatton on the family situation and then there were some interviewees barely in it - like 20 seconds of Thomas Hauser - which made me wonder what the point was.

I did spar Mick in the end … it was just before we travelled up to Derby. Me and Mick did 3 rounds reffed by Rob. I remember at the end of the third I ran over to Rob wanting him raise my hand as the winner … but he declared Mick as the wimner.

Another funny one was we were in the hotel bar, mick, rob, myself and a couple of others . Mick rang the reception making out he was in Matthew Thirlwall’s room and there was a rat in the room … it was hilarious.

It’s odd sometimes looking a modern day fighters record and seeing few significant fights there. I think with Hatton it feels like there’s more because every fight was hyped up, even before he won a world title. I think the observation he stagnated after the obvious Tyzu peak is correct. Probably only the Castillo fight was impressive, and that’s because the Mexican wasn’t nearly as fresh as a lot of Hatton’s opponents at the time. Urango was a decent result against a good fighter. I don’t really recognise that pre Tyzu he’d faced particularly amazing overseas opposition. There was a fair bit of good matchmaking going on and trading on names which were fading or faded. Probably Magee was the only properly dangerous fighter pre-title. And that was a tough one, and only the Irishman’s lack of conditioning got that one home really.

Well probably. He is a great demonstration of levels. He really murdered some British level fighters like Stephen Smith. You could have Magee as a decent European level fighter, and that was more of a struggle but a clear win. He did achieve a lot, I suppose I’m just surprised he didn’t get at least one more big win after Tszu. There was a sense that once the left hook to the body was defended against, perhaps the punching power in head shots was average at higher levels.

Of course in my post about should Hatton tried to face the other belt holders before waiting for the #1 in Tszyu (risking never fighting him) there was name that it was a crying shame Hatton did not face - Miguel Cotto. What a fight that would have been, such a shame it didn't happen. I think Cotto at Welter of course above was probably too much of everything for Ricky - but the weight drained 10 stone Cotto vs the peak Hatton - that would have been something else and you might argue that, given what Cotto did after 2005 a victory over a green, weight drained Cotto would have been a better legacy fight than a over the hill Tszyu.

Another thing about Hattons da I remember .. when they did the homecoming at COMS, think it was Lazcano (sp) they were flogging tickets to to some sort of Afterpart, anyway I mind folk bought them and they essentially juat had tickets to a marquee in the car park, while the "VIP" s all mingled inside.
