'Matchroom exterminator' Hughes ready to kill off Visioli's title chances

Maxi Hughes believes that the naivety of youth will cost Giorgio Visioli his unbeaten record on Saturday night.

The lightweight pair will meet over 10 rounds on the undercard of Dalton Smith’s WBC junior welterweight title defense against Alberto Puello at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena, live on DAZN.

In March, the vastly experienced Hughes (29-9-2, 6 KOs) was stopped in five rounds by Pierce O’Leary after making a short-notice, ill-advised move to 140 pounds. However, over the past seven years, only world-level fighters like George Kambosos, William Zepeda and Bakhodur Usmanov have beaten him at lightweight.

Still, time and time again, domestic level fighters have tried to advance their own careers by adding the aging Hughes’ name to their record. The promising Visioli (11-0, 6 KOs) will be the latest to give it a go.

Hughes is a veteran of the sport and understands exactly why he has been hand-picked for this weekend’s job but it isn’t an unfamiliar position for the 36-year-old from Yorkshire.

“There's still plenty of life in me for an old dog and I have to ask the question; if you're a Matchroom fighter and you're sat opposite me, what have you done to upset Matchroom because you might as well call me “The Matchroom Exterminator,”” Hughes said at Thursday’s final press conference.

“You did it with Kid Galahad, you wanted rid of him so, 'Feed him to Maxi.' You did it with Gary Cully, 'Feed him to Maxi.' So, I don't know what Giorgio's done to upset [Matchroom]. I don’t know if that's the case and you've brought me here to get rid of him for you or if he's upset you but I'm feeling good.”

Visioli, 23, has been touted as a future star since the early stages of his career. He insists Hughes was selected from a list of potential opponents and a victory would mark his graduation from a talented prospect to a championship-level fighter.

Hughes doesn’t dispute that Visioli chose him but says he may have felt like he had no other choice.

“Well you've pressured him haven't you? You've done your job as a promotional company. You’ve hyped him up, you've promoted him well, you've done your job. It's his turn now, basically,” Hughes said when asked by Eddie Hearn if he thinks the matchmakers have made a mistake this weekend.

“I don't know if there's a bit of common knowledge now that I've heard that his team didn't want it but Giorgio's the one [who did].

“You put my name along with some other names, you're basically asking him, 'I dare you to fight Maxi.' Being the age that he is and the job that you've done, he’s gonna say 'Of course, I’m not scared I'll fight him' so I guess, being in the game as long as I have, that's why we're here now.”

Alberto Puello unfazed by ‘infamous British judges’ ahead of Dalton Smith title fight

Alberto Puello does not fear home cooking ahead of facing Dalton Smith for the WBC junior welterweight title in Smith’s hometown of Sheffield, England.

Puello was once the owner of the famous green-and-gold belt, but lost his title to Subriel Matias in a controversial majority decision defeat last year. Puello – and many watching ringside and at home – felt he had done enough to defeat the hard-hitting Puerto Rican, however, Matias was awarded the victory. Matias would then go on to lose the belt to Smith after being stopped inside five rounds back in January.

Now Puello must travel to the UK – the British Boxing Board of Control have come under criticism for biased judging in recent years – to attempt to rip away Smith’s title in the champion’s back yard.

“I'm not worried in any sense about this,” Puello told BS. “I might not be the favorite in that sense, but that's for the people who don't know me. I feel like I'm a fighter, I'm a boxer, I'm a champion without a belt, without a crown.

“I feel I was unfairly treated in the fight with Sabriel Matias. I'm not worried about the infamous reputation of the British judges, nor going into my opponent's backyard. Those things don't concern me.”

The controversial defeat to Matias in 2025 no longer takes up space in Puello’s mind.

“What’s done is done. That fight is over,” said Puello. “I’m not really thinking about a rematch with Subriel Matias at this time, but in boxing, who knows? Maybe that is God’s plan, maybe that will happen in the future, we just don’t know. But it’s not in my immediate plans right now.”

After being denied by the judges somewhat controversially in his last title fight, one would think Puello would be looking to take the result out of the judges’ hands.

“No, that's not something that I'll be looking to go out and do,” he said. “I'm not a boxer that goes out looking for the knockout, but if it presents itself, then that's different. The most important thing for me is to go in and get this win at all costs.

“Alberto Puello will be taking home that belt to the Dominican Republic.”

Got an uneasy feeling about this one for Smith: possibly the best fighter he’s met so far, tough and awkward, confident, no pressure on the visitor, probably just as hungry, and had that recent warm up. It will be close, might be calls for an unwanted immediate rematch.

Hopefully not, I might try and find a pub that’s showing this tonight

I think Smith really stepped up last time and showed class. I think he stops him.

Anyone else think Hughes might get the win too?

I think Visioli will be too good. Too much energy, too much movement.

It's a good step up for Georgio.

Reassured by the Graham Houston preview in boxing news I just read, he thinks Smith proves too strong.

I bought it because I like the battle of Britain cover plus some good stuff in there by the looks of it

Really tough test this for Smith. He's facing a seasoned guy who is arguably unbeaten and boxed at a higher level.

Beaten Russel, Martin and in many people's opinion Mathias.

Can't see Smith stopping him so let's hope he has the engine to go the distance at pace.
