I don’t know shyte about Burnham’s politics or policies, but I read this in the New York Times this week and really wished Spain would adopt his policy on this:
“In recent years, one long-held convention, that riders should keep their electronic devices quiet, has appeared to be crumbling — in many places around the world — as some travelers scroll videos or play music without headphones.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham of Britain this week announced a national campaign against what he described as “one of the most annoying things on public transport.”
The government is urging passengers to use headphones on trains or risk being asked to leave the train or face a fine, and is publicizing existing policies that allow the local authorities to issue fines of up to 100 pounds (about $134) to tackle loud music on buses.”
Burnham has just committed electoral suicide!

On my tram line the transit system would make a fortune paying someone to ride and hand out fines all day.evrenb wrote: ↑23 Oct 2026, 13:08giacomino wrote: ↑23 Oct 2026, 11:54 I don’t know shyte about Burnham’s politics or policies, but I read this in the New York Times this week and really wished Spain would adopt his policy on this:

It's been years since I've had to get on the peasant wagon, but it used to drive me mad when idiots had their devices blaring out some shite music or video on full blast.giacomino wrote: ↑23 Oct 2026, 11:54 I don’t know shyte about Burnham’s politics or policies, but I read this in the New York Times this week and really wished Spain would adopt his policy on this:

In Japan, random punters will call you out just for talking normally on a mobile phone, never mind speakers or music blaring, it's considered extremely rude on public transport.

Japan is great like that, if a group of scrotes were attempting to mug someone, the whole carriage will often get together and batter the perpetrators.

It is great but it would never happen in the west because there's always some do-gooder to make excuses for the perpetrators.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑Yesterday, 04:48Japan is great like that, if a group of scrotes were attempting to mug someone, the whole carriage will often get together and batter the perpetrators.

They also frown upon eating on the train, and there is still a strong etiquette regarding giving your seat up for the elderly, pregnant, ect. Not sure when the standards eroded so far, but i remember as a kid this decorum was as normal as standing to one side on the escalator or thanking the driver while getting off the bus. There is a lot to admire about the Japanese.banjo wrote: ↑Yesterday, 05:08It is great but it would never happen in the west because there's always some do-gooder to make excuses for the perpetrators.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑Yesterday, 04:48Japan is great like that, if a group of scrotes were attempting to mug someone, the whole carriage will often get together and batter the perpetrators.
