Ernie Roderick
Will someone tell me how I can post pictures on this site so I can just shut this fornicating asshole up for good? Ill post screen shots of the actual film if need be. Can you do that Silkov? You wont answer a single question Ive asked you since day one, and the only reason you insist on your questions is because I painted you into a corner. Ill post storyboard screenshots of the film in motion. Can you do the same? I doubt it. Jesus youve been caught in about three lies now and you continue to make a complete ass of yourself.
The only arse here is you, chill out and don't take everything so seriously. You won't answer any of my questions, why should I answer yours??. I told you Jock was floored twice in the 14th!. Once from a foul, which you didn't seem to know. You tell me what he did in the begining of the 7th!. You said that you had the film but you won't answer any question about it.klompton wrote:Will someone tell me how I can post pictures on this site so I can just shut this fornicating asshole up for good? If youre just going to stoop to vulgar swearing then I shall not reply to you at all.
If you really have got the film then I suggest you watch it because you seem to know nothing about Jock and have needed Collins to answer one of the questions I've asked you.
You came here first saying you knew everything about Jock Mcavoy yet you have come up with nothing about him except a totally inaccurate assesment of his fight with Thil saying Thil destroyed him when that was certainly not the case, you are either grossly biased against Mcavoy or you have neither seen him fight nor even read about him.
And why won't you tell me the name of your publisher???......
Don't be mad because you've been found out, Collins still likes you!.

Re: give me strength
thats a great article on roderick rob. i noticed the first name on his record was a certain tony butcher who was another liverpool fighter who`s real name was tony baccino. at least i assume they are the same person. tony came from liverpool`s `little italy` district and was great friends with another liverpool pugilistic folk hero dom volante. i looked at tonys record on boxrec and noticed they only had a handfull of fights by his name.robert.snell1 wrote:thanks Silkov...yes the point of my post was to celebrate the life of an old time boxer and give info to people which they may well be not aware of. Also to promote the web site of Wirral and Merseyside ex boxers.
i was led to believe that tony fought for the world title in valencia`s plaza de toros bullfighting ring against hometown hero bathazar sangchilli and lost a close decision. the fight took place when the spanish civil war was on and at the end of the fight hostilities broke out in the crowd, tony had to leave the stadium sharpish and he never got paid. hence the old chesnut he fought for the title for nothing!!
i then went to sangchilli`s record to see if the fight was logged there but tony`s name was absent. however in 1936 when the fight was supposed to have taken place the name george butcher appears. butcher lost on a 4 round ko but boxrec have no other fights or background info on this apparent mystery man. i`ve a funny feeling mister`s george and tony butcher are one in the same man.
i`ve no records or articles to prove it but i was led to believe tony had over 360 contests including against people of the ilk of johnny cuthbert and as i mentioned fought for the title. it seems a pity that such a merseyside boxing cult hero only has a handful of fights registered in boxrec. i could be wrong though and adding 2 and 2 together and getting 5 so can you or any of your association shed any light on this rob?
also from that neck of the woods is that i`m also led to believe that ernie roderick and jem mace are buried not far from each other in the same cemetary. is that true?
Liverpool fighters
Jem Mace and Ernie Roderick are buried in Anfield cemetary. Until quite recently there was no stone to mark Mace's grave, but the Merseyside Former Boxer's Association conducted some fund-raising, made the relevent enquiries about placing a stone and did old Jem proud.
The grave is near to the back of the cemetary.
BoxRec is lacking when it comes to Butcher's (Baccino's) record. I'm sure Rob has some additional info. I will also check to see what I have on him and get back to you.

it seems tony was part of st joseph`s amateur boxing club in liverpool which at the time included dom volante who went on top the bill at madison square gardens and joe curran, and indeed joe curran ended up tony`s brother in law. i checked out the ring magazine`s ratings for 1939 and joe was rated 4th in the flyweight division for that year (an interesting footnote is that in the same year fellow liverpool boxers peter kane and ernie roderick were also rated 4th in the bantam and welterweight categories respectively, a proud boast for the city considering there was only 8 weight catergories in those days and the sheer amount of hungry, hard as nails american fighters plying their trade at the time. rochdales finest jock mcavoy held the 4th spot in the middleweights.)
tony butcher was under the management of tony vairo but when his title shot came about mr vairo couldnt travel with him so tony was left in the hands of an international boxing agent by the name of bobby diamond for that particular fight.

hi and thanks for the comments you make.during his career he did have over 300 fights and it is as you point out an issue which needs to be resolved in terms of adding to his record on boxrec.well spotted with regard to george and tony being the same person, mistakes of this sort are all to common sadly.headhunter wrote:thats a great article on roderick rob. i noticed the first name on his record was a certain tony butcher who was another liverpool fighter who`s real name was tony baccino. at least i assume they are the same person. tony came from liverpool`s `little italy` district and was great friends with another liverpool pugilistic folk hero dom volante. i looked at tonys record on boxrec and noticed they only had a handfull of fights by his name.robert.snell1 wrote:thanks Silkov...yes the point of my post was to celebrate the life of an old time boxer and give info to people which they may well be not aware of. One of the principal reasons for setting up our web site was to preserve and enhance the details of ex boxers from the area and i am pleased to say this is in fact working out very well.By Jan 2006 I will be in a positionto start entering new fights - several hundreds - on our guys and provide a very substantial amount of detail on the individuals and the fights they had as reported in the local press of the day.
I am also pleased to say that my good friend Boxscribe is working with me on this .As already noted the 2 guys are buried close to each other. A point of interest is they worked together at the lister drive power station in Liverpool. The fee , he never got, for the fight in Spain was around £200.

Interesting stuff mate!. I'd like to see those records if you get the chance I'm always fascinated by the records of these 'oldtimers'. Its amazing when you see then fighting about 4 or more times in a month!.
Do you know Rob whether fighters of that era would train hard all the time or did the fact that they fought so often keep then 'fit' so they didn't need so much training between fights... if you know what I mean. I've often thought about this question.
Could be why someone like Greb seemed not to train that much but he was fighting so often he didn't really need to do really heavy training...

Hi mate...I have about 1500 of the fights from the stadium ledger entered into a database so far and abou 500 of the 1200 pages scanned. when completed I will be happy to send the details to anyone - within reason - and will of course send you all the scans on a cd .will send what i have to date to you next week anyway as its quite facinating to see what they got paid.
As for traing side of things many of those guys were working so had to do training before or after work, and clearly we are not talking about 9-5 jobs in those days. Also as you point out the sheer frequency of the fights was staggering when compared to the cushhy life that exists today.
with regard to the payments one of the things which is difficult to fully appreciate is the actual value it represented in its time. A feature I will be introducing is to give an illustration of what for example a £5 purse meant in terms of the weekly wage and say e.g this would buy a pair of shoes and etc.
place some examples of adverts in the press of the day as illustrations.I think many people tend to forget those guys were doing this for extra cash to support the family. I think the lowest purse I found in around 1934 was £2........which they had to share with the manager and pay out for travel
£2 for getting battered around for 6 rounds and having 15stone hanging onto your chin was no joke

you and boxscribe keep up the good work and although it must be hard and sometimes thankless task its also important because considering the place boxing had in merseyside society especially during the early part of the century its not just boxing but a local history issue.
back to butcher £200 must have been a fair few quid in 1936.
which 2 fighters worked together at lister drive mate? as jem died in 1910 i`m assuming it was roderick and butcher?
