Good fight poor production though.
Vann bottled it - Matthews SHOULD HAVE got DQ'd.
Duke saying the cut won't impair his vision you could tell it was a bleeder from the start.
The judges were rediclous - when I heard the scored I thought - Simpson's got it. I didn't think it was possible for Matthews to win by 7 points with 3 points (minmum) lost.
I thought Simpson won the fight personally.
And now, Barry has bottled it..... John Rawling clearly said the Barry McGuigan has scored it a draw - now he is saying Matthews just nicked it.

Totally agree, when the scores were read out I typed Simpson UD and yes now Barry has changed his decision from draw to a Matthews win.stujones wrote:Good fight poor production though.

Exactly right about Barry. What a tit.
It was impossible for that score of 118-112. I had money on Derry too but I was hoping Simpson knocked him out. Derry must have thrown atleast 30 illegal shots, rabbit punches in clinches, punching in headlock, forearms to face, rubbing his head into Simpson's cut, alsorts. Vann should have definetly DQ'd him, total shambles.
Derry thinks he's the best featherweight in the world, I think he'd get dominated by every champ at 125 and blown out at 130.

Agree holeheartedly with J-C's sentiment. The fight (and judging in particular) has made me absolutely fornicating furious. I just wish there was some way to stop this farcical shit.
Not that I really want to, but to actual chip in something in defence of the whole charade - I thought (maybe I was wrong) that McGuigan did actually have Matthews 1 or 2 rounds up going into the last (or 2nd last.) I thought when Rawling was talking about the commentary had it a draw, they were only referring there to the last round (which Duke gave to Simpson, Rawling gave to Matthews, and McGuigan made a draw)

It could be a reason, but I thought Rawling says - McKenzie has it for Simpson by 2, I have it for Matthews - making it a split.... and Barry's had it a draw.jomothepure wrote:Agree holeheartedly with J-C's sentiment. Anyway, perhaps I was harsh I suppose anyone can make a calculation error if they are not keeping an "official unofficial" tag. Although, it might be better if McGuigan does do that - cause at least he knows the scoring system. I don't think McKenzie does. So far, I have notice every point deduction he has scored 10-8 - regardless of the round. This time though I did agree, but the way it sounds its as if it has to be scored that way. My card was closer to Duke's than John's - I had it Simpson by 2 or 3 (cannot quite remember) but I'm not sure about Duke knows how to score a fight.... Barry does, he has done it before.
People have defended Duke in the past by saying, sometimes he has to state the obvious as he is talking to lots of lay boxing fans. However, when he states obvious wrong things like "this cut will not impair his vision" - then sorry (nice fella that I am sure he is), he's got to go. Plus saying from the 9th round, there is no way Matthew can retain on my card - when he actually could and very nearly did (had McKenzie agreed with Rawling on the last round it would hav been a draw) - then surely he is only confusing the lay fans more.
Duke should have at least retracted his statement on the cut by saying "on second glance that cut is a bad one".... something Jim Watt is great at.
Fair play though. Thought John Rawling did a good job and at least doesn't agree with Duke.
ITV spend the cash you make on dodgy phone competitions on Jim Watt.

Matthews was disgraceful in this fight and probably should have been disqualified. When the scores were announced I was jumping for joy because it seemed impossible that Matthews could have won this fight by such a large margin after the deductions and the knockdown. I had Simpson winning the fight by 2 or 3 points in the end.
You've got to give great credit for Simpson in this fight though. Despite being the underdog, getting a bad cut and having to deal with Matthews appalling dirty tactics, he still tried to fight a clean fight and fought with tremendous grit and determination.
As for the scorecards? Unbelievably corrupt.
To be honest even though Kotelnik v Mbaye and Simpson v Matthews were decent fights, the whole card was a bit of a sickener. Terrible biased commentary, dodgy decisions, very bad sportsmanship and we also had to watch Mitchell batter a non punching featherweight.

It might have been initentionally funny, but its true. I'm getting in tune with John Rawling's commentary more and more thing he is starting to settle - but Duke has got to go, sorry aswell but that was beyond what he said about his card and about Simpson's cut.jomothepure wrote:stujones wrote:it might be better if McGuigan does do that - cause at least he knows the scoring system.![]()

I remember, Barry in a show the replayed Eubank vs Benn II back in 1993 - explaining the 10 point must system and he had it pretty much right. I say pretty much, cause I am not entirely sure is the card called 10-10 or 9-9 - if you score the round to Benn, but he gets a point taken away. Barry had it 9-9 - but explained how it wasn't automatically a Eubank round.
Get Bob Mee or Jim Watt there, both will score a fight correctly.
Nothing else to add. I couldn't believe Matthews had got the verdict when the scores were read out. He loses two points, gets knocked down, and still wins 118-112 on one card? Get tae fvck, as Simpson's countrymen may (possibly) say. 113-111 I can buy, because it was a scrappy affair, but the other two cards? fornicate off. Total disgrace.
The scoring should have been irrelevant though, because Matthews should have been chucked out of there.

I just got back from teh Olympia and came straight on here because I couldn't believe I heard it right when they said Matthews had 118. Matthews must have scored 10 in each round including the one where he was knocked down. How exactly does that work?
The Kotelnik v Mbaye scoring was a farce too. I think Micky Vann had one scorecard 117-112 to Kotelnik which was way out but no way did M'baye deserve the win. He was roundly booed and desrved it. He fought on the back foot throughout the fight and did nothing to impress.
Did anyone see the Denton Vassell fight? That was a bit silly as well. His opponent retired in the first round after hurting his wrist. It clearly wasn't broken and he stopped pretty much straight away.

Can't believe those scores, way to wide. And I knew Matthews could fight dirty, but fornicate me, that was disgraceful.
Thought Kotelnik just nicked the fight with M'baye, as did most of the crowd (listen to the boos!).
Fight of the night for me was Paul Smith, but he looked sloppy in there. He was being soundly outboxed for most of the fight, but his power bailed him out. The KD in the 3rd & 2nd rounds seemd to get him excited, as he turned into a bit of a headhunter after that, tried too hard for the KO.
