I feel the crux of the capital punishment argument if whether having one guilty man executed is too much.
If we did have the death penalty there will always be errors and innocent men will die.
Is it worth sacrificing a few innocent men to execute many guilty men?
Remember the Birmingham six would have all have been executed.
DNA testing has greatly reduced the chances of an innocent man being fried...and it provides incontrovertible evidence in many cases!!

You are right that advanced science has reduced this risk but as Terry said, eggs will be broken.
I think the argument is, is one innocent life too much? Because there will always be at least one.
I doubt there will be many people who would oppose the death sentance for some of the horrible scum out there, but legislation would have to be put into place to organise this and that is where problems occur.
If it was the simple question, does the likes of Brady, Hindley or Huntley deserve to die, it would be an easy answer
Haven't both huntley and Brady attempted suicide on several occasions.
I think there is an argument for giving them the choice. If someone is going to spend the rest of their natural life in prison, then it would possibly be better all around if they chose to die rather than be forced to live in prison. It's a more compassionate stance in my view.

Simply executing people who perpetrate gun crime ain't gonna work.
It's not a matter of morals, it's a matter of expediency.
The upsurge in gun trade is primarily due to the drug trade, it is needed to protect drugs/money, you can't exactly go to the cops to say u've been robbed!
A lot of firearms are being offloaded throughout the old eastern bloc countries.
Obviously guns/crime being glamorised in films/music does not help.
It seems to be most kids back up plan if they don't get on Big Brother!
Which brings us back to legalising drugs. Take away this lucrative cash stream and cause of turf wars, by selling drugs in licensed outlets, much like we do with alcohol. It will kill the drug trade stone dead, the quality would be better and cleaner, and the gangs would surely decline with it.
The crack trade in South London is what the rise in gang culture is all about.
It won't end gun crime, but I dare say it would reduce it a lot.
To be honest, even though I am very anti-drugs, I actually agree with you.
Alchohol causes more social problems than drugs, and if drugs were legalised it would kill the trade stone dead, along with many of the gangs that go with it.
Drugs would be safer as they would not be tampered with, it would be easier to monitor problem users and of cause it would bring in massive tax revenue.
The money could be used to counteract the problems drugs bring and more importantly could fund schools, hospitals etc
If I thought legalising drugs would increase usage I would be against it but the fact they are illegal does not stop any one taking it and they are so easy to get hold of.

The drugs trade is supposedly the third biggest in the World (can't remember the exact number of ££££'s). The amount of tax it would generate over here would be humungous.
People are going to take drugs no matter what, so IMO the government may as well take control of the situation by supplying it through legal outlets. The governments approach to drugs hasn't changed since I've been born, yet the availability has soared (as I recall in the early 90's it was about £15-20 for 1/16 of oz of resin, last year you could get an ounce for £35) surely this shows that the governments approach isn't working.
Smack and Crackheads are the people that give 'Drug-users' (although people who drink alcohol are drug-users in my eyes) a bad name, because of what they'll result to to get their fix (shoplifing, mugging) they should all be registered and given their drugs for free. It would instantly free a massive amount of the polices time and the smackhead isn't robbing my £500 stereo and selling it fo £50 or beating up elderly people for the contents of their purse. Surely this approach would be better on society and cost-effective in time. I don't see this approach as being easy on the smackhead as some people undoubtedly will, I see it as being easy on the innocent people who have to live in the society around them and put up with their antics in their quest for drugs
People who take ecstacy or smoke pot have no detrimental effects on society as far as I can see, where as drinkers go around causing havoc attacking each other, coppers, nurses etc. Why should I have to break the law to smoke a spliff in my front room???

still, if you legalise drugs, more ppl will misuse them, more ppl will act bloody stupid in our binge culture, leading to more tragedies of a different type.

What is the situation with James at the moment?
Were the SUN accurate or have they got it wrong?

They've pulled the story which is pretty conclusive.
They had quotes from Maloney and everything.

How the kin'ell can the Sun misprint that someone is dead, surely they'd have to wait for the hospital to make a statement before printing such a strong story

I had a mate who used to work in connection with the Mirror or the Sun and I can't remember who the deceased was, but basically he said the print had run carrying the news of a this bloke's death before it had officially been pronounced, so this doesn't come as a surprise at all.

Part of the problem in this country is that people read THE SUN.

HE'S OFF THE ROPES AND FIGHTING BACK
Shot boxing champ Oyebola stuns medics
This is the headline i've got in The Sun in front of me!
According to them he has responded to tests, apparently only one side of the brain is affected which could mean he escapes brain damage.
They also say doctors expect him to live.
If this is true it is fantastic news

Let's hope its truer than this morning's story.

At the very latest the edition is written late last nite, more realistically early evening so it's not going to be the most up 2 date info

Just literally on Sky News, it's confirmed by the family lawyer that James is brain dead. Tragic.

It's just awful news, it really is. James was a gentle giant and we always saw him at the shows being friendly & chatting away to folk. It's sickening to have a life taken just like that in such a horrific way. I hope those c***s get what's coming to them.

They're taking him off life support tomorrow.
Didn't James have a hand in guiding Ajose Olusegun?
