Fight stopped after an accidental headbutt badly cut Bumphus' eye. I had it 58-58 a Draw.
The 3 judges had Bumphus ahead by 3-5-1 pts. Bumphus threw more punches, but Starling blocked a good pct of them.

Tallied this one in my head back in the day and I think I came up with a draw. Here we go
Round 1: 10-10 Even
Round 2: 10-9 Toney
Round 3: 10-9 McCallum
Round 4: 10-9 Toney
Round 5: 10-9 McCallum
Round 6: 10-9 Toney
Round 7: 10-10 Even
Round 8: 10-9 Toney
Round 9: 10-9 McCallum
Round 10: 10-9 Toney
Round 11: 10-9 McCallum
Round 12: 10-9 Toney
Total: 116-114 Toney
What a tit-for-tat fight this was. McCallum's higher volume behind the jab against Toney's lesser volume but with more pop. Good fight.

Very good fight, and if you love to see jabbing, this is a bout worth watching. Pinklon Thomas showed excellent composure in winning the title from Witherspoon, because he was hit with some good shots, but just soaked it up and stayed within his fight plan and scored heavily with his jab and quick combinations.
Seamus, this is a first. It was in the back of my mind the last few days to check out this fight again after you scored it and I did so today. And I had it 5-3-2 Coetzee with the exact same rounds. Wow! Might never see that again. I remember when I watched it back in the day thinking the draw might be OK. But Thomas - I felt - just waited a bit too long to get into the fight. Still, with a 5-3-2 anyone can see those swing rounds differently. Still a good result and none of the judges threw out some bizarre score. Still amazed at our scores though, dude.Seamus wrote:Gerrie Coetzee vs Pinklon Thomas

Gerrie Coetzee 5-3-2 which would be scored 5-3
First half of the fight wasn't too exciting but it picked up in the later rds. Disappointing performance from Pinklon Thomas who really neglected his powerful jab for most of the fight and who just wasn't busy enough. Thomas looked all primed for a big finish after dominating round 9, but Coetzee, dripping with blood turned in a gutsy final round.

Edwin Viruet 5-3-2
Brilliant performance by Edwin Viruet who boxed like a young Cassius Clay at times. He showed total composure and made Duran miss often and hit him with counters consistently. AND, there were plenty of boos when Duran got the decision.
Seamus, here's another bout I've been meaning to attack. Salvador Sanchez vs. Ruben Castillo. I think I had it a draw in my head when I first saw this bout. But pen to paper, here we go.Seamus wrote:Salvador Sanchez vs Ruben Castillo

Salvador Sanchez 146-141
This was Sanchez's first title defense,
and the challenger Ruben Castillo got off to a good start, clearly outboxing
the champion over the first three rounds. But then Sanchez became more
focused and applied the pressure to Castillo, clearly outlanding him with a
nice mix of body and headshots the rest of the way. Interestingly, in an
interview many years later, Castillo claimed "I whupped his ass, but Don
King wouldn't let me get the decision". Well Castillo remained poised and
boxed and moved well to the final bell, but at the end, he just hadn't
landed enough to win. Same exact score I gave for Sanchez vs LaPorte. So,
who was better vs Sanchez, LaPorte or Castillo ? I think Ruben looked a bit
more skillfull, but just needed to be busier.
