Love the old programs. I like to pick out the futere big names. I see Howard King on this one. He fought Archie Moore in Tijuana. Any info or photos?
Oh man, I just had a major flashback. In 1973 in Chicago we had a wrestling program on here called Bob Luce Wrestling. We were in our teens and we all knew this crap was fake but we would watch anyway. I was into boxing big time by then but would get a kick out of some of the staged shenanigans. Anyways, there was this one wrestler who was a regular on the show and always featured at the arenas named Pepper Gomez. They called him the man with the cast-iron stomach and used to do stunts like dropping guys from a ladder onto his belly or rolling a volkswagen across him. Anyway, Luce used to say, "Rocky Marciano in his prime whacked Gomez in the belly and Gomez didn't flinch." At that point I'm telling my buddies, "Yeah, right. Marciano's prime was 20 years ago in 1953. How old is this guy supposed to be?" Anyways, I laugh at seeing this card (which, by the way, is from 1953) because look whose name is up at the upper right hand corner. Too funny. How long were these damn wrestlers around for?

Is that Lee Savold, the boxer, he's wrestling? Savold retired after losing to Marciano in 1952.

[quote="dagosd2000"]Question for any of the experts,
A couple of real crowd pleasers that fought each other in San Diego a couple of times,Renato Garcia and Chucho Garcia(no relation)

Dagos, I knew Renato Garcia pretty well, but I didn't know ChuCho Garcia. Renato was handled by Willie Ketcham, who was a very shady charactor. I remember my trainer, Mel Epstein, used to tell me how impressed he was with the curly haired Garcia, from Chile. We were about the same age, and he worked hard in the gym. He was pretty popular in L.A. for awhile. You know, I heard something about Garcia toward the end of his career. but I really forgot what it was. It seems as if he got sick, or something, had a disease? Dunno?

Wed go to church in the morning , then Id run over to my friends house and we' d throw on Championship wrestling.
Bens Auto Sales.
The whole scene was typical of how Chicago USED to be.
I remember Pepper Gomez well.
The cast Iron stomach , the Volkswagon , the whole bit.
Yourright, some of those guys were around a LONG time.

I think Gil had Emile from day one.
I dont think Gil ever had any fights.
Andi dont wanna speak bad about the guy but I was always a little bothered that Gil didnt pull Jerry Quarry out of the Norton fight a little sooner.
I thought Jerry took some unneccesary shots in that fight.
I know others wont see it that way, Thats fine.
I wonder if it would have mattered if Gil had some fights he might have been a little quicker with the hook.
Jerry was taking some real bombs in there and Kenny could bang.
Just an opinion.
I guess hindsight is 20 20.

Quarry took that fight at the last moment and was SOFT and out of shape.

He hurt Norton early and didn't finish him off.

Then Quarry ran COMPLETELY out of gas and Norton beat on him like a punching bag.

With Quarry doing nothing back.

Should have been stopped ROUNDS before the ending. That was brain damage time. It served no purpose at all.

After Foreman lost to Jimmy Young (Foreman had Clancy in his corner) Foreman said ruefully, "I never shoul;d have boxed him." (obviously referring to Clancy and his corner advice).

Clancy specialized in offering guys who did well enough in sparring with Griffith that they should come with Griffith-Clancy as a sparring partner and that he would get them good fights.

I know one guy who made the mistake of going along with that and got one fight in 2 years. I know of two others Clancy offered that to.

Can anyone shed some light for me on why Vicente Saldivar was DQ`ed in his first fight against Emiro Duvergel? I have a 15 minute highlight of this fight and for the life of me I cannot figure out why he was disqualified. Vicente was dropped in the 3rd round but was coming on strong in the 5th and 6th when suddenly the fight was stopped at the beginning of the 7th round. The crowd seemed none too pleased at the turn of events and voiced their displeasure very loudly and started throwing things into the ring. Whatever anyone can tell me about this fight would be most appreciated.
I figured I`d bump this up to see if I could get a reply. On a seperate note those pictures of Kenny Norton that were posted earlier made me think of a story I heard many years ago and I believe it was you Rick who told the story of how Norton had stolen another man`s wife shortly before his first go wit Garcia. Can anyone confirm this or am I way off?
