Its just the usual crap isn't it. Has any fighter ever legitimately won a fight? Nah there is always some bullshit excuse from the trainer, manager or fighter himself. So Hatton got a virus against Lazcano and he also had one against Urango?
Utter bollocks. A) What exact virus was it Dr Graham? I mean don't fighters have to pass a medical before they can fight? Even at that it was probably a slight head cold or sinus infection. Hardly a bloody virus. Lets say it was a virus. So it lasts for 2-3 days max. On that basis an 8 week training camp is put into disarray and only by the grace of God does the fighter manager to do 12 action packed rounds and comfortably win the fight? Yeah very good. Tell us another one.
Its just all BS. I notice how Graham conveniently forgets to remind us that Hatton had always struggled with southpaws (see Magee and Collazo) and indeed had been on the canvas heavily and badly shaken up by Magee. So we're meant to believe that he has nightmares with those 2 when at his peak but could have handled Manny Pcquiao easily? Yeah right.
Its just so typical of boxing trainers. I mean the Kerry Kayes stuff is laughable. Talking about drinking loads of water and pissing like a racehorse as if that was a factor in Hatton getting knocked out in 2 rounds. Aren't there like hundreds of approaches and techniques for conditioning? Are we to believe that Mayweather Snr as idiotic as he is has been a pro fighters himself and worked with ODLH and Guzman but completely neglects them? Just how big a factor is conditioning in a 2 round fight anyway?
I'm just so fed up with this kind of nonsense. Its like after every big fight someone associated with the beaten fighter comes out with all of this crap about how things would have been different if the moons of Jupiter had aligned, Cher was number 1 in the charts and ultimately the defeated man had been more talented and a better boxer.
I remember George Foreman saying that its very rare for a training camp to ever go 100% well. There's always something that goes wrong; bad sparring : a cut: a cold: an injured muscle: a damaged knuckle etc, etc. Its the same for every fighter.
What makes Graham's laments ultimately flawed is that he says he would have pulled Hatton out of the Lazcano fight if he could have so he's basically admitting that he knowingly took an ill fighter into a fight and didn't do anything about it. Therefore the pay cheque meant more than his 'great friend's' health did it? Billy never at any point thought that no longer having the power to decide if your own charge was in good enough health to compete in a 12 round fight in front of 50,000 people, constituted a reason to quit?
I admire Billy Graham a lot and thought he got somewhat rear ended by Team Hatton in the way Mayweather Snr was given free range to constantly insult him. However stuff like this just makes it very hard to take him seriously. He's not the 1st to come out with bullshit like this. Manny Steward I remember in a recent interview attributed Tommy Hearns's loss to Hagler as being down to an unauthorised person in the dressing room massaging Hearns calves in the hour leading up to the ring walk. Yeah right Manny that's why Hagler nearly put your charge through the canvas. Honestly are these people so deluded that they think even a reasonably intelligent person is gonna buy that. Just lose gracefully for crying out loud.
To paraphrase one of my favourite movie lines:
Sometimes the bullshit piles up so fast in boxing you would need wings to stay above it.
Pre-fight medicals usually check for stuff like brain damage/shadows, a virus is often picked up in the early days of a camp, as the body adjusts to the changes. They actually got a doctor in to look at him, and the training was fiddled about with, for the second time that camp.

It is actually a 12-week training camp, the schedule is decided in advance, so the days taken up by the virus meant an extension of certain aspects of the training.

I am not sure it actually says that 'Manny would have been handled easily' at any point, in fact I am almost positive that is not what he said, just, in his opinion, and yes we did talk about the Magee and Collazo fights, that Hatton would have won a few years back.

The stuff about the water is about hydration, and how you come into the weigh in without flogging a dried up body, it is a bug bear of Kayes, and he often talks to active boxers about this type of thing, they find it quite interesting, and helpful.

The main thrust was to ask if Hatton had come into the fight in top condition, looking at him on the scales I thought, "No", and, fortunately, was able to canvas the opinion of two men who have a track record of bringing guys into fights at a certain weight, and under certain conditions. No excuse making, just explaining why the fighter never quite looked at the races, or one side of why this was the case.

As for people associated with the boxer making excuses, the two are no longer associated, and should Graham have quit when they did not pull the Lazcano fight? Maybe, it is his choice, if he had have done there would be threads slating him for leaving 'his man' in the lurch.

Fighters get ill before fights, if they win we do not hear anything about it, if they lose they make excuses, if they do not make excuses they may not be able to come back again. It is part psychology.

No one is trying to deny that Hatton was beaten by the better boxer on the night, we were just looking at his pre-fight conditions, which was poor, and getting the thoughts of his former trainer, who, by the way, has sat back for a year and listened to people say that he was poop, had no knowledge of the technical aspects of boxing and was holding Hatton back, so he is entitled to have his say on what went wrong in this fight, as it may partially remind people that he did the odd thing right (such as bringing Kayes in), and counteracts a little of the professional/personal slating he received from Floyd, who clearly needs to learn about this area, or bring someone in who knows about it.
Hi Terry. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I'm not sure what your relationship is to Billy and Kerry and if they are personal friends of yours, but my intention was certainly not to be personally offensive to either. It was instead to vent frustration at an increasingly popular theme that is occurring amongst trainers and people associated to fighters. That being making excuses rather than just accepting the defeat.
In my opinion if a fighter requires a lie in order to aid their mental recovery from a defeat then there is a serious flaw in their psyche. I can take people saying 'Ricky should have been more defensive' , 'He saw the red mist' etc but for me Billy was basically claiming that the defeat was down to preparation and was essentially firing the same criticism at FM snr as what he had been firing at him beforehand that basically being 'You don't know what your doing.' I just can't believe that’s true of either.
Ricky looked in fantastic shape to me and on the night he looked a lot bigger than Manny. No one highlighted conditioning problems. I mean it’s my understanding that Lee Beard is in charge of that type of thing anyway and not Mayweather Snr.
Though conditioning had nothing to do with it. Stamina does not play a part in 6 mins of fighting.
I'm also surprised Terry that you seem to believe that a 12 week training camp is a hard and fast rule. It’s my understanding that they can range from as little as 6 for a major fight up to and exceeding 12 weeks. It’s at the fighter and team's discretion as far as I know.
The overriding theme emanating from what Billy was saying was that a prime Hatton would have won rather handily. I mean before it he said he was surprised that Manny was the betting favourite and that Ricky would win well within 8 rounds.
All the best. :TU:

I mean its a miracle Hatton made it up the ring-steps really, he only had 4 months notice, could have picked any trainer, gym, team, programme on the planet.

Hatton made ALL the decisions. Nobody forced Mayweather on him, they may have encouraged the notion but Hatton is master of his own destiny, he's MD of his own career.

Whatever happened in camp is Hatton's fault, whether it be weight, focus, strategy, stamina, trainer, nutrition, location, sparring etc.

Ricky hires and fires.

He's proved that. He had a taster run with Mayweather last year and talked endlessly about how he should have done it sooner, how he'd got worse under Graham how Mayweather had him improving and remembering his skills.

Pacman won the fight because he is quicker, fitter, hungrier, better prepared, better tactics, more skilled, faster footwork and hits harder - and he was responsible for all of those factors directly or throught the employment of qualified personnel. Something Raith Hatton isn't really.

They are good at making money though.
Great post

This is an interesting thread. I saw Hatton a few times during his training camp and several times in fight week and I thought he looked in good shape.

A couple of things I particularly noticed were that his skin looked very clear. For a long time he has suffered from coldsores in the run up to fights, which some have put down to all the crap coming out of his system when he trains, but he didn't seem to have any of that this time. Another thing was that Ricky has often had various bugs and colds and gets pretty bad nasal congestion (which he clears with a fairly revolting snort) but I never noticed that this time either, so he seemed in good health to me. I saw him a couple of times when up in Manchester for the Khan fight and he looked in good shape for that time (7+ weeks) before the fight - he told me he was 11st 4lb.

One rumour I did hear, whether it is true or not, was that Mayweather did not do southpaw pads with him and that Lee Beard started doing it after Erislandy Lara gave him a going over in sparring. There were also rumours that he had an elbow injury which he needed a cortisone injection for (which was denied). But there is always a lot of gossip around a big fight, most of the time it is rubbish, indeed the Lara story could just as well have been put around by his people.

Financial Demands from Kayes???

I dont think so - you should ask Kerry - he may tell you - you will be stunned by his reply.
Thinly veiled "I-know-something-you-don't" comment by Spud as usual. F*ck off with these types of comments mate.

The deal is.. Kerry Kayes never took a penny from Hatton.

I can break this down really simple.

No version of Ricky Hatton would have ever beaton Manny Pac or PBF.

I was saying to a pro boxing trainer back in 2001 at the Jason Rowland fight that Hatton was a one dimentional, cheating over hyped fighter and that as soon as he faced a real prime top fighter he would be exposed.

Lets just bury Ricky Hatton the W BUM U, the crap jokes, the crap Man City ring walk, the "Im just one of the lads", the "Im bigger that him", the "Me boxin skills am underrated", the excuses after excuses when he get KTFO.

Fook Ricky Hatton he is GONE & boxing is better of without him, lets move on and support REAL fighters like Kevin Mitchell, Karl Froch ect,ect

Why? It used to be OK. I realise a lot of BBN links get posted on here, but what's wrong with that? First of all, a lot of BBN writers post here. Secondly, they're all well known on the board, generally respected and post on a wide range of things, not just their own site/articles. Thirdly, I can't remember anyone complaining about BBN links, so where's the problem??
Just want to pick up on this - I honestly believe boxrec are making a mistake here - BBN are a good site and I see nothing wrong with posting their links on this site.

The only thing I can think of why this has happened is - If a forum like this posts a link to a site and within that article contains possible libellous, or dodgy comments then they are as guilty if proven so as the original site where the article originated from and thus it seems there is a bigger picture here in that a promoter or an individual has complained in the past and all boxrec are doing is protecting themselves - that is the only thing I can think of for this move.
This is boxrec and its run the way its run. If you don't like it, f*ck off to another forum, oh I forgot, you're banned from them all.

Oh dear, KG will be pleased. 'Support' is what it is all about, and we should support those guys, and will, but they will not pull in the numbers that Hatton did.

No you do NOT support these fighters, take a look at a Karl Froch or Kevin Mitchell thread it will have only a handfull of posts, Froch may have picked up since the Taylor fight.

I remember when Froch & Haye were novice pro's i would get all kinds of sh!t even from so called boxing people & trainers for calling these guys the real deal because they weren't flavour of the month at the time.

And this place is SUPPOSED to be a hub for knowledgable boxing fans..........yet the people on here would sooner pick over the bones of a dead fighter like Hatton that was never that good and his excuses.

Hatton has had far more than the 15 minutes of fame he should have, so now let it go.

The fact Billy Graham can even mention the like of Sugar Ray Robinson and Ricky Hatton in the same interview shows what money has done to his head.

IMO Hatton has done a lot of damage to british boxing, i could go futher into this but can't be bothered, use your own common sence.

"Hatton has been bad for British boxing"

Erm, let me try and conjure a few?

1 - PPV?
2 - Misleading fans via WBU belt?
3 - Diluting the boxing crowd with casual fans
4 - Avoiding Junior Witter?
5 - Sacking off a British trainer?
6 - Leaving allegedly just as he joined ITV?

I'm trying hard here?
