Seems a bit strange though that between last night and 2/3 o'clock he injured his back, it was diagnosed and deemed serious enough for it to be cancelled.
I heard it. Haye said the training camp was going well. But it wasn't a live interview, so could have been recorded a day or so before.

Given that Klitschko must fight Povetkin by September, I think the soonest this fight could happen would be around December, if at all. Hopefully Wlad wont get caught up in mandatories and just brush Haye off. And if the fight does happen Haye will have been out of the ring for a year and I'm sure that will only hurt his chances.

As for some of the suggestions for subsitutes like Williams or Sprott  People complain about Wlad beating up on overweight bums and then they suggest these guys

Problem is Haye was a voluntary opponent for Wlad so he'll have to wait for his shot now, he should concentrate on getting fit and fighting other ranked opponents to force a title fight.

I actually think Haye will be better off having a few more fights at HW before taking on Wlad, so maybe this can be a blessing is disguise, but I'm not sure if he will get that chance again, at least in the near future.

Absolutely gutted this fight is off, I was really looking forward to this, in defence of Haye I can't remember him ever messing anyone about previously so it is the first 'blemish' as such on his record to my knowledge.

I agree, as long as Haye can win those fights. With some good matchmaking Haye can move himself up all around and this fight can be bigger than ever. Wlad will definitely want to fight him as soon as he can. The ticket sales are evidence of that.

Totally gutted. I reckon I am still in for a weekend in the dorf if anyone else is still up for it. No refunds on the flight.

Strangely, Valuev is targetting Vitali Kitschko rather than agreeing to fight Wladimir (who offered for Valuev to take Haye's place).
WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev is no longer interested in wasting his time on a fight with Ruslan Chagaev. He wants to fight the other champions at the weight. The first target on his list is WBC champion Vitali Klitschko.

Klitschko still has issues to take care of. He is schedule to arbitrate his situation with the WBC next week. The sanctioning body is trying to force him to defend his title against Oleg Maskaev - even though Klitschko just made a mandatory defense against Juan Carlos Gomez in March.

“Now I am going to strive for a fight with Vitali Klitschko. Vitali has my phone number. So if anything crops up we’ll be able to talk it over without any middleman,” Valuev said at a press-conference in Saint-Petersburg.

James Toney is willing to face Wlad.
You can add former super middleweight champion James “Lights Out” Toney (71-6-3, 43 KOs) as another potential opponent for IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to fight on June 20th, at the Veltins Arena, in Germany. According to the Los Angeles Times, Dan Goosen, the promoter of the 40-year-old Toney, said that Toney is “in shape right now” and is ready to fight Klitschko on June 20th.

Toney would probably be as good a choice as any fighter that could be selected at this point to step in for the injured David Haye, who pulled out of the Klitschko fight this morning due to a hand injury, because there are not a lot of other viable options for Wladimir with only three weeks to go before the fight. Goosen says that unbeaten Chris Arreola wouldn’t be ready in time for a fight with Wladimir in only three weeks, saying that “isn’t in the type of shape you need to be for fighting the heavyweight championship of the world.”

Toney, 5′9″ 235, would be giving up nine inches in height to the 6′6″ Klitschko and 11″ inches in reach. It would be a bad mismatch in terms of size, but with Toney’s boxing skills and good chin, he might be able to make a run for the money if he can get Wladimir into deep waters and drown him in the later rounds. Wladimir would likely try to look good and knock Toney out and might tire out if he’s unable to get Toney out of there.

Naturally, Toney would take some terrific punishment for the first six rounds but after that, Toney might stand a better if he can get in close and start landing some hard shots. When Wladimir is tired like in his fights with Lamon Brewster and Ross Purity, it doesn’t necessarily take that big of a shot to take him out of there.

Just back from Klitschko's camp in Austria. It was right at the end of his press conference at about 5pm that Bernd Bonte came in, called Klitschko outside and told him it was off. Wladimir walked back in, sat down and just said "faaaaarrrrrkkkk".

Big shock, although there had been rumours that things were not all well in Cyprus. Sky are claiming it's a hand injury, but I haven't heard that. The rumour heard was it was a nagging back injury. He s supposedly flying to London tomorrow to see a specialist.

Klitschko said straight away that he wanted still to box on June 20. They have sold 55,000 tickets, have HBO, and they wouldn't want to do a July fight, because of Mayweather, and they kept going on that people wanted to see Klitschko, not Haye. Klitschko wants to stay active, has the Povetkin mandatory due and they wouldn't be able to get the stadium in August/September because of football.

I suggested to Wladimir, 'why not Valuev, he's fit and needs a fight' and his eyes lit up. Think Chagaev might be more likely as he has been passed fit in Germany, might not have too long a career left and won't have a title come Saturday.

Thanks for the info Ron. A fight with Chagaev would be worth flying over for. I very much hope they go for it.

Kohl told me around the time of the Skelton fight that he had a trace of hepatitis antibodies in his blood. They have to monitor these regularly as he can't train when they get too high - hence he pulled out of the Ibragimov unification in 2007. He said he would always have this but it is under control. He was passed fit by the German federation, but the Finnish federation weren't happy and would not grant him a licence unless Valuev agreed to have a vaccination which he apparently didn't fancy, although I don't blame him for that.

Now, some German journalists in Austria over the last couple of days were of the belief that this was a big conspiracy cooked up by Sauerland and Don King to con Chagaev and Kohl out of the title. I don't go along with that, because it must have cost them a small fortune to pull the show at that notice. Meanwhile, Sauerland said that the fight only got called off so late because Chagaev initially refused to take a blood test. Doubt we'll ever know the truth, but in Germany many of the writers tend to be in either the Sauerland camp or the Universum camp, so you often don't know who to believe. I reckon Chagaev will lose his title, though, and I doubt he would be allowed to box in Britain. That's only a personal view though.

I'm certain Valuev (or his people) would turn down a fight with Wladimir. They want no part of him.

Banj, Chagaev does have a mild for of hepatitis B, but the risk of infection is close to zero. It was still enough to have Valuev running for some reason. I see Ron has explained why above. Thanks Ron. :TU:

I listened to that as well. After the interview, both Buncey and Mike Costello said 'he doesn't sound very confident. Not like him.' That's what I think they said, anyway.

Hmm . . .upon reading this it seems that a good possibility is that Sentanta couldn't guarantee Haye any money anymore with their financial situation. How does David suddenly go from having a back injury to a hand injury?

I think it was kind of thrust on him at the last minute. I know he was sat in a room discussing it with his wife for a bit and I suppose it wasn't really clear if there was any risk of infection or not and it would have been another worry for his wife. I can see that could have played with his mind only a few hours before a big fight.

I have to say I agree!!!

However I find it very strange indeed the member of Team Haye I have just spoke to in Cyprus is making out he knows nothing of this news - obivously looking after an exclusive or something is not adding up here!!
Christ on a bike! 4 times in the opening ten posts you've told us you've spoken to a prominent member of the team in Cyprus. Who was it, the cleaning lady? No wonder I've got 156 posts to sift through to get to the route of this 85 of them are from you Spud.

Agreed. Disgraceful from Albert, once again trying to make himself seem important on a message board but thats Albert I guess.

I'm disappointed this fight is off, like everyone else. I was looking forward to it. I think the Setanta money might have been an issue here.

well last month someone was on here saying he'd skivvy for any promoter if it meant sleeping on the same floor of the Travel lodge of whatever boxer.
It's just that like...if the fight is off...and it sounds like it is...then really, for all the "connections" it sounds like somebody in particular knows jack sh*t........it takes all kinds I guess.

I'm no media man but it wouldn't surprise me if money was at the root of it. If it is I'll bet the big Ukranian bastards have something to do with it. Didn't they want all of the ticket money, all of the German money, all of the American money and a share of DAVE'S British Setanta money??????? For a chinless "hide behind" the fckin jab, Muhammad Ali Mike Tyson Joe Frazier would all make them sh*t their pants wonder, they don't want much do they??

What made me laugh is Spud's disgust and disbelief that the "prominent member" of Team Haye could possibly have preferred NOT to tell him the truth. I mean does this prominent person know who he was speaking to.

As for the contenders list, I find it hard to believe Wladimir is going to want anyone of completely different style or size to Haye. Chagaev, Boswell, Brewster, Sprott are logical choices, this is a voluntary - is it still governed by the rankings?.

Can't see Valuev getting the job, equally, he's been preparing for a short-dumpy opponent.
