You won't miss all the fights? Amonst many others, over the last couple of years Setanta have shown Hatton-Castillo, Cotto-Judah, Cotto-Mosley, Cotto-Margarito, Margarito-Mosley, Pacquiao-Marquez ll, Pacquiao-Diaz, Pavlik-Taylor ll, Marquez-Diaz, Calzaghe-BHop, Calzaghe-RJJ, Calzaghe-Kessler, Haye-Maccarinelli, Torres-Holt ll, Holt-Hopkins etc. etc. Also some great domestic action. I'll certainly miss them if/when they go under!

Yes, but Sky already had a contract for a lot of the domestic boxing, so that leaves the international scene, and that doesn't come cheap, and with the start times, there's not going to be a massive audience either, so where do they generate their money from.

It's difficult to estimate whether there would be enough money to show boxing solely from boxing subscribers. International boxing feeds can cost as little as £20-30k (from what I've read), whereas a quick calculation of the amount of money and number of games involved suggests football can cost several mill a match. It's obvious they didn't have enough subscribers, though, to be bidding that sort of money for the football rights. Anyway, it looks as though they might be gone by midnight tonight:

no not really, i canceled my subscription ages ago (after they continued to take 30-00 a month from me for 14 months instead of the then 15-00, dispite the 20 + emails, Phone calls and letters i sent) , all those fights and many more were availible for free on the internet, i personaly have not missed a hbo, showtime, sky or setanta broadcast in the last 5 years or more, Setanta going tits up is bad for boxing no doubt but i hope Sky get there arses into gear and start picking up more fights again, if not then the internet is the way forward for the diehard fans, but i suppose boxing interst amonst the general public will diminish further with the lack of t.v

Yea I'd much rather watch a blocky 5 frame per second picture on a pokey 20inch screen instead of lounging on my sofa in front of my 46incher seeing the fight in its full glory. Not to mention you have to hunt around to find the stream in the first place. If Setanta go under I wont get to see much boxing at all because I cant be assed with these streams

If Setanta goes it will be an absolute disaster for boxing. Not only have the Hayemaker shows they have done been very good, not only are they the only channel willing to invest in overseas boxing on a live and non pay-per-view basis, but Prizefighter, just about Sky's only competitive boxing, is paid for from the budget that Sky unsuccessfully bid for UFC with. If they now pick up UFC with that money, Sky's boxing will be even more dreadful than now.
Talk all you want about getting fights on streams, but these fights only happen because TV companies invest in them. With no Setanta, no ITV, how is there ever going to be another world title fight in Britain? Sky don't seem like they will invest. They pay essentially a basic flat rate, so the more money a promoter spends on making a fight, the less profit the promoter makes.

Yeah, Setanta have been good for boxing here in the UK. The overseas boxing will of course still be financed overseas, and available on streams here. But, they have put up money for plenty of title fights involving UK boxers, and that will be missed. Also, what will the effects be for Hayemaker? I imagine it will be difficult to find a good TV deal in the current market...

Not to mention that the internet in Britain is not up to standard and won't be for a few years.
Hence why Gomez said it's the future of the sport. No-one said it will be easy. I'm just saying there's an opening available for whoever wants it (and has the resources to make it happen).
Internet (IP) broadcasting is the future of TV, nevermind boxing.

It will be nothing like the experience you get today, however. It wont even be through your PC. It will be done through a set top box a-la freeview.

2/3 years is all

Uh huh, but boxing gets miniscule viewing figures compared to football, plus less money from advertisers.

I blame the Premier League. Setanta was always going to collapse once they gave Sky 5 of the 6 Premier League packages.

I want to but I can't boycott the Premier League though 'cause Wolves have been promoted

It's a very good question, and depressing as hell. Boxing is clinging on for dear life right now, and might take a Tyson/Ali type figure to come along in the next few years and save it.

There will still be the occasional big ones like Vitali/Haye that could be sold to the BBC or ITV. A heavyweight title fight, involving a Brit, primetime Sat night is going to be an easy sell. The hype and drama of the occasion could blow even the Wimbledon final out of the water, so you'd hope the Beeb would make a grab for that one.

The saving grace is the acceptance that the UK is a significant market in the way the major US networks look at the Hispanic buy up, they look at the British end too. Though obviously its a smaller facet than the Mexican audience. Evidence of this was the media tour of Mayweather v JMM - who would have heard of such a thing?

We also provide a link between the rising German audiences/fighters/shows and the US shows.

If ESPN were to take on Setanta's principle contracts it could work out well for your down trodden Setanta subscriber.

It wouldn't be primetime though would it? Even if it was in Germany the start time would be edging towards midnight or slightly later.

Less money from advertisers yes, but viewing figures - I am not so sure (for the big events). How many does Match of the Day get regularly, I would say its comparable to the big fights shown live on ITV in recent times. Didn't Williams vs Harrison 1 get something like 8 million? Also, would like to know how Pacquiao vs Hatton PPV did in comparison to the PPV Football that was on Sky (Prem Plus).

Sure these Friday night fights from half full leisure centres are not going to attract a millions yes.

You are talking about justin tv type streams wich i agree are crap, i am talking about quality streams the quality of say the BBc iplayer, there are plenty out there if you know ware to look,
i do not have a 46 inch screen, but however i do watch them in my living room on my normal wide screen tv a few cables will solve that problem.

I completely agree - The more anyone thinks about this rationally - the more its one big f*cking disaster for boxing if Setanta go!!!

And with regards to how on earth will there be another world title fight in this country without the likes of the TV channels - quite bluntly there wont be one - unless of course Promoters can persuade Sky TV their show warrants PPV status.

I presume the people on here slagging off Setanta have either experienced bad customer service, are not boxing fans or are cretins.

Ron has explained most of it so it saves me some time.

Look at the Sky (naively? selfishly?) been serving up for boxing fans. Now it's only going to get worse.

I agree, I'm with Setanta 110% untill it's over.

They helped boxing fans when Sky did not give a rats arse.

Ian,

I have to say I did criticise Setanta - wrongly I might add when they clearly did not and could not show the Froch fight - little did I know then although there were the rumours how much sh*t they were in!!!

I honestly feel guilty as hell for my criticisms - I suppose you could say hindsight is a wonderful thing just wish I had it then!!

I know a lot of good people at Setanta - they might be losing their jobs so in my haste to be gutted for boxing - I am more gutted for those who might not have a job next Tuesday which I am told is the big day!!
