Frankie is fighting Michael Kelly now for the Irish title on the big sept 18th bill.

Former amateur star Frankie Gavin now fights Michael Kelly for the vacant Irish light-welterweight title in his home city of Birmingham on September 18, scheduled for 10 rounds.
Gavin, one of a large Irish contingent in the second city, was due to challenge Wolverhampton's Dean Harrison for the Midlands title on the night but Harrison suddenly upped his purse demands and in comes Irishman Kelly, a former good amateur himself, although not as good as Gavin.
Kelly, who boxed regularly in the Ireland vest, left it very late to turn pro and is now seriously knocking on at 35 (11 years older than Gavin) but keeps in shape and went 10 rounds in Canada in April, where he lost a wide decision and his unbeaten record to boot. The Dundalk man, 8-1-1 (2), also came in at lightweight, and Gavin is a big, big light-welterweight. Nevertheless, the 10 rounds should serve Kelly well next month after he was held to a four-round draw by one of those awful Latvians on the Dunne-Cordoba card last year in Dublin. In his defence it was only his second fight after three years out and he must have been rusty.
The two-time world military champion turned pro back in 2004 and beat a selection of the usual suspects before a hand injury, a failure to make his mark in the States and general disillusionment - you get the feeling he regretted turning pro - left him on the touchlines. Kelly was back again last year, trained by ex-pro John Breen, and sees this as a chance to make something of his pro career and to make up up for lost time.
With a tight defence, aggression and a good variety of shots, Kelly is no mug. However, he is not a big puncher, and had these two met as amateurs, you would have fancied Gavin. Nothing really changes in the pros, although I suspect it will take Gavin, roared on by his home fans, seven or eight rounds to break down the gutsy Kelly.

gavin's posts are hardly classy, but his supporters on boxrec are making me cringe.

woodhouse is a capable and willing fighter, who wants to test himself against a former world amateur star.

i don't think he should be ridiculed for that.

didn't a lot of us respect thaxton and wish for that khan fight, for the british title? we all knew that thaxton - who also came from a different sport - would level out and that khan would be moved towards a world title, no matter how many times he gets dropped, hurt or stopped. but we all liked thaxton's attitude and probably found his career more dramatic and exciting.

so gavin's going to be well past woodhouse, when woodhouse is able to fight? irish title isn't exactly highly regarded. the title will no doubt earn frankie some new boxrec fans, of the "guinness soaked" variety that bennie refers to!

First things first, Frankie is levels ahead of Curtis and he knows that, He's calling out Frankie cos it's simple, He NEEDS Frankie where as Frankie doesn't need him.. FACT.Curtis is getting great exposure just by being linked with Frankie. Curtis has done great seeing as he was only kicking a football a few years ago BUT let it be known that you can't compare with a fighter like Frankie who has been mastering the game his whole life, If this fight is made he'll see exactly what Im talking about. He thinks sparring good guys will help?? They same guys would take his head off if they put anything into there shots. 8oz Reyes on and this fight is over before it has even begun.


Also HOBB, I think you'll find that Paul Smith fought probably the biggest super middleweight in the country when he took on Tony Dodson, He also took on another fair sized fella in Quigley, It should also be known that McDermott is a very big middle so in terms of size I think it's always Paul fighting bigger guys bar Quigley..imo

Seen plenty with that attitude fall in life in general.

You need to take a good luck at my career pal, I've had virtually zero exposure, Any I've had has been very minimal.. Also what your saying is wrong, Curtis is not saying Im gonna win or anything of the kind, He has tried from day 1 to berate Frankie and purposefully wind him up, Calling him from ringside and also the rat calling stuff too?? Frankie didn't open his mouth to Curtis but he did reply, He's give his views and said he'd deal with him without any problems.. Now regardless of the name calling going on between them we all know that Frankie would take Curtis to pieces.. Getting exposure off the back of another fighter is not the end of the world if the fighter doing the calling out actually has a realistic chance of winning, Which we all know Curtis hasn't..

same could be said about cleverley.

frankie gavin v curtis woodhouse was a much more interesting fight than we usually get involving touted prospects. i know it was woodhouse who pulled out - with an injury. now it seems the feeling is that woodhouse had his chance and missed it.

obviously gavin, who competed at world level as an amateur, is going to be favoured over woodhouse, who has played football most of his sporting career.

but woodhouse has a compact pressure style that you'd think would complement gavin nicely. CW fights somewhat like carl johanesson, albeit without the same kind of power (and probably without the gym experience that johanesson had). maybe he'll lose to gavin, but that doesn't mean it'd be the end of him. even a loss to gavin could be a good chapter in woodhouse's story, and he could still go on to win something like a british or commonwealth title.

we know gavin will be getting moved up the ladder ahead of woodhouse, but at this stage it's a genuine fight. gavin's only just graduated from 6-rounders, right?

seems to be a bit of snobbery on here. eg woodhouse wants to earn this or that off frankie gavin's name. so we know who the haves and the have nots are. woodhouse also wants to fight, and believes he can win, which is exactly the kind of attitude ppl like from their fighters. he seems to be a good competitor who learns on the job.

i'd personally rather see woodhouse in good, blue collar style battles, winning a british title, than seeing gavin and co getting moved carefully toward vacant european and vacant WBO titles. that's just me though, and i know the industry needs the gavins more than the woodhouses.

exactly. he didn't even make the weight for the olympics, did he? granted he impressed in the AIBAS. and while a win over mcdonagh is very impressive for a prospect (purdy needed two tries), i don't see how gavin should already be considered leagues above fighters like woodhouse. i'd like to see him prove it, and prove the many assumptions here on boxrec. some prospects don't even adapt to the pros that well, for instance the cuban - whose name everyone has forgotten - who used to fight on the same shows as gamboa and solis.

and for all the woodhouse knockers, didn't gavin's own trainer get some decent mileage out of a similar style and from a similar level of talent?

By the time the fight could realistically happen, Gavin will probably be beyond Woodhouse.

I don't think I'm world class but I'm levels above Curtis an he was the first one who showed me disrespect but not getting into that again if the fight happens use will see

Absolutely no chance at all with Gavin in that case, worlds apart and that'd be obvious inside 3 minutes. Different levels. Still credit Curtis for calling out the fight, a brave man but he's in for a massive shock if he thinks this'll be even close.

Not being funny Thaxton was a brit&euro champ at that point...
Curtis comes across as a top bloke on this forum&i do admire his front in wanting to face Gavin..but i believe 2more fights down the line frankie will be so far ahead(brit title fight on the horizon) he wont look at curtis......u get in wiv dean harrison or michael grant lets see how u do...i think there a bit above u in my eyes,take them fights coz frankie wud box the ears of u&stop u...
