Fair play to you... I just wanted to elaborate it a bit for you, I think some people maybe don't quite realise the connection between the First World War and Ireland, and how it impacted on decision-making towards the Second World War. As it was, Irish 'neutrality' saw Luftwaffe pilots interned, and Allied Pilots dropped across the border into the North. I'm not sure off the top of my head but no doubt there are other examples of different treatment.sg1985 wrote:I wasn't trying to say it doesn't have an impact, I was asking a genuine question, I didn't understand why he brought he it up.MatthewS wrote:at the risk of starting something...sg1985 wrote: What does the war of independence have to do with remembrance day?
the original intent of the Poppy Appeal was to commemorate the fallen of 1914-18... which was ostensibly fought for the 'rights of small nations' but of course not Ireland, no matter how many Irish volunteers died.
Some of the veterans of that war were employed in Ireland, known amongst other things as Auxies or Black and Tans, and they were responsible for a fcukin' lot of awful things. So I would say that the commemoration of 1914-18 does impact on the historical treatment of the Irish War of Independence.

Do I care about remembrance day? No I don't, because they didn't fight for my freedom. They fought to keep the likes of me oppressed.
Did I ever protest against Remembrance day? No, because I don't care about it.
Would I be disrespectfull and do something like burn poppies? No, I wouldn't.
I went to the Easter 1916 rising celebrations in Dublin in 2006 (they fought for my freedom). Some friends of mine didn't agree with it. No problem with me, they were entitled to their opinion (freespeech!).
The British fought against the IRA in the War of Independence, to keep us from becoming an independent state.

In ww2 Ireland didnt want british troops that were unlikely to leave deploying in Ireland and becoming a state police and the nation was split between German supporters and people who didnt like Britain but were strongly against the nazis. If anything Ireland entering into the war on the side of the allies would have probably ended with them being invaded by the nazis and the country being used as a staging ground against Britain anyway.
Britain expecting a country it was oppressing to join a war on its side was rediculous in the first place. About as rediculous as the US expecting the Afro americans to jump at the chance of fighting for their country in vietnam.
At the end of the day rememberance day should have been expanded by the british to commemorate the lives given by the irish in the irish war of independance and ww1. But due to the actions of IRA and certain support for the nazis by a portion of the irish and irish politicians during ww2 it never happened. Plus the irish, after the treatment/oppression of the bitish military and certain violations that they carried out, didnt want a part in the britsh lead memorial which also in parts (indirectly) commemorates troops which were involved in these acts.
Maybe in time with the changing meaning of remeberance sunday things may change.

The UK got bailed out before by the IMF, or have you forgotten?carlbcfc wrote:So independent you just may let us bail you out of the mess your nation is in.FeargalóCuinneagáin wrote:What are you talking about??????????J wrote: and you are. you have posted several times that you dont think rememberence day should be "celebrated" ..they didnt fight for your freedom no..cos the fookin nazis would have left Ireland alone wouldnt they...christ on a bike...

I do think it's the case that a lot of Brits are unaware of quite how badly we acted in Ireland historically. I can completely understand those Irish who would choose not to recognise Remembrance Day or don't consider it relevant to them.
Re: (BREAKING NEWS) Anthony Small RETIRES from Boxing.
I don't think that has anything to do with what the Islamic Fundamentalists are doing. Ireland just wanted to rule their own country. The Islamists want the whole world as an Islamic state. Ruled by shia law. But muslims in this country, who are protesting against the war in Afghan. Do so despite being a citizen of this country, been educated by this country.
I do not see these Islamic freedom fighters in the middle east, who are filthy rich by the way. Helping out with the floods in Pakistan. It is the west that are pledging the most aid. I just wonder how the jihad philosophy manages to square that one away with the would be suicide bombers.
And the burning the poppy, is dishonoring the many muslims that fought on our side during the wars. But I wouldn't expect gentleman like Small to know much about history.

so how do you feel about the various neo-nazi groups across europe? i think they meet your definition. are they freedom fighters? they are indigenous people, generally down trodden, violated by a stronger regime that would oppress for their beliefs...liamlion wrote:Totally disagree. My definition of Freedom fighters are indigenous people, down-trodden and violated by a stronger, oppressive and imperialist regime and who attempt to resist this foreign regime in order to regain what they once had, e.g. their freedom, their way of life.banjo wrote:There's no such thing as a freedom fighter, what we call "freedom fighters" usually fight to rid themselves of an ideology so they can install another.liamlion wrote:One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. We live in a democracy and its essential that people have freedom of speech. People need to be careful not to act like Fascists in condemning people with differing views.
The only true form of freedom is known as Anarchy, but Anarchists for some reason are considered to be bad people, personally I don't see a problem with people wanting to live the way they want to without being controlled by politics and religion, it is the way we used to live after all.
see?
a 'real' freedom fighter fights for a universal definition of freedom......not their own narrow interpretation.
Re: (BREAKING NEWS) Anthony Small RETIRES from Boxing.
the group he is involved with want an islamic caliphate in britain and sharia law brought in...the same as in afghanistan. don't kid yourself he was protesting the wars....I think he would last longer than that. What has that got to do with anything anyway?
oh those poor muslims...like the ones in bosnia and kosovo? we didnt invade iraq because it was a muslim state....it wasn't actually a muslim state anyway...the baath party was secular. many muslims live within it's borders but these were oppressed by saddam...we have not oppressed people in iraq because they are muslims. What would that achieve? Should we lock up all Muslims when we attack and occupy Muslim nations?
dont believe the hype ffs...try thinking about things for yourself.
the group that small is involved with have deep links to terrorist groups. surely you'r e not that naive that you genuinely think all this was about was protesting remembrance day./.What has Islamic terrorism got to do with it?
